Worldcraft is no more!
An updated version of Valve's level editing tool is now available for download. This release includes new functionality and several fixes. It also introduces a new name for the product, Hammer. Changes include:

Splitter view layout is now preserved from session to session.

Added Copy to Clipboard button to the process window.

Sped up time to bring up the Face Properties dialog when many brushes are selected.

Sped up 2D view scrolling.

Added timed selection of objects by depth in the 3D view when the left mouse button is held down.
Fixed:

Fixed a random spinlock when rendering sprites.

Fixed texture rendering problems with sprites, etc.

Fixed freeze when starting map with sprites visible.

Fixed a crash in the path tool.

Fixed problem with texture shifts being reset when importing old MAP files.

Fixed black brushes caused by clipping.

Fixed a lockup when scaling certain brushes.

Fixed infinite lines in 3D view in vertex mode.

Fixed clipping causing duplicate solids.

Fixed decal repositioning.

Fixed camera angle view bug.

Fixed problem with running compile tools from paths with spaces.

The timed selection thing is quite cool... will make it so much easier to select those tricky entities within entities.

I was just going to make a similar post, but decided to wait until I finished downloading it.

    *quickly glances at date*

    *cough*

No seriously though... This is the real deal. I don't like the new name though...

sweet, i'll d/l it as soon as i finish compiling my latest hallway (it'll knock the socks off of anything i've made before, but at a huge w_poly count, hopefully not too high...)

maybe they fixed the thing that always made 3.3 crash every 20 minutes on my comuter...

This is the most bizarre release in editing history. An odd 2 years after 3.3 is released, valve release 3.4 with the most mundane bug fixes, tweaks, small additions, etc, while the application stays 99.9% exactly the same. Oh, but the name is now Hammer. I think this IS some kind of an april fool, verging on 'cruel joke'.

well, im gonna download it and see if it has func_buyzone for once without having to download stuff although i DONT like the new name, i have seen people stick with old acronyms. u can still call Hammer WC if u want.

p.s. i remembered april fools when CSNation, my homepage and counterstrike news page, was pink today and stated that it now covered the WWF and that CS was dead. had a neato review of the WWF xbox game.

Well, if we all have to debate on who got it when, I would be ahead of all of you . Ok, literialy, the biggest change in this release is the fact that the name changed. This project was rushed out the door and lots of people seem to disagree with the new title. Why did they change it? It was to make Wor...grr... Teh Valve Hammre Editor... seem more popular by making mappers type three letters (VHE) instead of two (WC).

Ok, maybe that's not it, but it seems as if there were.... legal technicalities over at valve, and that is what forced the change. (and that's all yer getting outta me&#33

I think Hammer just sounds that much more bad-###.

Before I tried it out I thought it was an Aprils Fools joke... But it works...

If this isn't some sick joke, I'd say maybe the name change has something to do with the TF2 editor?

Heh, it's a joke, because everyone thinks it's fake until they try it. Tadaa! Everyone fooled! :P

Seriously, if you go to Vavle-ERC you see that it was released the 31th of March. :)

It was release the 31st of March for them. I was online and actually browsing the ERC for entity info when it was posted. It was April 1 when I noticed the update.

And so my skepticism has kept me from downloading the thing.

There's no point in not downloading it. As others have said, it does work and there are actually bugs that have been fixed and features implemented. I've already downloaded it, but the mere fact that I have to go back and redo all my game configurations *anger* me off so much that I haven't actually started using it yet.

It's BS! That is such a Lame ### name. They should have atleast thought of something cool, Like LevelCraft, or Halfcraft or something!

Ya know if you copy your .wc files from the old WC directory into the new Hammer directory then you don't have to recongfiure it all!

-Im gonna hammer myself a new map
-Im gonna hammer my map to pieces!

Or whatever... sorry, I couldnt come up with anything good

The term 'teh hammre' is a VERC thing, and we VERC regs are rather subborn . Also, teh hammre has a cammeo appearence in VHE, a rather ironicly timed Easter Egg of sorts...

Find it, and learn the origin of the term...

Pah, I am not downloading it. Mostly because it doesn't help me at all, and I am to lazy to download it.

Ermm... It's mostly bugfixes. They stop the thing crashing as much, behaving oddly, breaking, refusing to load maps, and so on. There's nothing groundbreaking, but it's far better to use updated software since it's less likely to crash and take your masterpiece with it.

Personally, I'm really happy that various long-standing, really annoying Worldcraft bugs have been squished.

Oh, and the timed-selection thingy is well worth the download in itself.

hmmm, i still wish theyd kept the WC name and at least added some changes worth a damn . . . like transparencies and in-editor model previews and the like . . .

So do I. They (obviously) have the technology... or at least some of it... why leave it out? *shrugs*
