If you don't consider atleast 4 of the games i listed in my list above than your clear idea of a horror game is wondering around a pointless map in a third person view, which is the least scariest point of view you can make a game since your like some camera watching someone which makes it feel like more of a movie feel which is worse. Compared to the first person view which gives you the roll of the person and makes you feel more like your him instead of some stupid 3rd person camera.

I just don't understand adventure games like that. I mean, look at Monkey Island. You can't even lose. Compare it to something where you have to find an esoteric solution to a puzzle that I think is literally impossible to solve, or else you'll never finish the game, and it's like "what?" I can't for a moment imagine what was going through developers' heads back then.

I never felt in danger in Silent Hill though, because it's so stupidly easy to dodge even the fast enemies. The game just felt dumb, but I never got far in SH2, so can't really give an opinion on that. Some parts of it were horror <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> though.

They made it easy on purpose though, the enemies are there to unnerve you not really kill you. I mean, if you don't even have the flashlight on they can't see you and you can just walk passed them and I think even touch them without them doing anything. Not to say they're completely harmless but they're just down right creepy. The first Mannequin had me WTFin' for a while.
I guess. I don't get disturbed by the look of enemies, though. It's the enviroments that bother me, and third person horror can't creep me out in that respect, so I guess it's bust for me. SS2 scares the crap out of me though.

Well, she could drive around a metropolis by herself with no clue where to go or just ride with me to school and play on her laptop while i'm in class, then we both use to work at the same place.
I'm with him. Bad controls are not scary. They're just bad. If your means of putting pressure on the player is having him wrestle with rebellious controls, you should go back to the drawing board.

I think bad controls are awesome in horror games. If a ghost girl appeared out of thin air, my response would be to spasm wildly drop my gun mid-reload, run into the wall for a second or two, while searching circling through my stuff then finally in a panic impulse strike strike the hell out of the kid with a Maglight.
"Hmmm, okay, i got the key" *walks through door* "OMG A MONSTER!" *accidently equips flashlight* "****" *gets killed by monster" "******* **** *** *** **** ***"
good controls.
"Hmmm, okay i got the key" *walks through door* "OMG A MONSTER" *equips gun* "RAAAWWRR" *kills monster* "Few, that was a close one.. scared me a little"

SS2 would be the game that freaked me out a lot to be honest. Very few games can beat it's atmosphere, at least the first time you play it. Sad thing is that if you replay a game over and over it will lose it's sting and you'll figure out everything there's needed to figure out. First time I played I loved it though, I never knew what would come - it did not contain any cheap scare tactics - the appearing ghosts of the crew members was really tasteful for instance, and the scariest part about them was not that they appeared all of a sudden (although that would still make me jump) but rather the scene that they displayed. My favorite is the crewman who says goodbye to his wife and kid before shooting himself in the head rather than being turned into one of the many.
Audio logs and audio atmosphere in general. Not only did the excellent voice acting make things disturbingly realistic but what people had to tell was freaky too - again none of that "jump out from a corner and shout boo" thrills, but something way deeper. Then there's the enemies. Midwives are still the creepiest enemies in the whole game when it comes to disturbing dialog.
All of this the first time playing + constant lack of ammo and near-broken weapons and whatnot else simply cause you don't know what will come next and where you can find this or that = definite win.
And someone mentioned Castle of the Winds before? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> In a sense that would creep me out a few times, but that would mostly be cause I would find myself face to face with some insanely strong creature whilst low on HP and mana and reeeeeeally far away from the nearest staircase.
