Ok, about the voice communication
I think it should be possible for aliens to hear what marines say through voice chat
I know they'll use their own radio frequency but it's realistic to hear somebody speak in the mic when you're near
Marines however should not be able to hear what aliens say (since they don't speak english? haha) but instead when an alien talks through voice comm, a marine would hear alien sounds
But that might be weird, since aliens don't really have a radio <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> Maybe they communicate via telekinesis <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

True. What about aliens not understanding human languages though?

hmmz good point <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
maybe they should hear weird sounds too then
Players on aliens could be heard by 'rines, but it would sound like a hissing, or guttural gibberish.
Isn't there a game that already does that?
In this case, the reverse is also true.

no idea, maybe the AVP series? I never really played those tho
I think an idea was proposed there or maybe I just thought it up but never posted it, that one of the advancements for marines or kharaa would be researching / evolving the ability to understand the other team when then talk near you, like some from of xeno linguistics at a science structure or something.
Could be interesting, could also be a waste of time. I give it a 50/50 chance since communications are vital to operations but sometimes all you would here is the other team calling each other "n00bs" or something. Actually, nix that, if the other team is fighting with each other, that is a sure sign to go in for the kill since they are disorganized when you are not.
Not a bad idea with some tweeking for upgrade paths and what not.

Oooh I like that idea of doing research to understand the other team's language
Maybe the marines could have 2 settings on their radio, one for normal marine-to-marine voice communication, and another setting to recieve and decode alien sounds
the radio could translate these sounds into english then
