<div class="IPBDescription">Back in my day....</div>I am looking to track down some old mods to first off see if they will run under steam and then if so, maybe have a weekend of fun playing around in them all. I am shooting for old HL1 mods that are fairly simple and quirky but fun. A few I have so far:

- Buzzy Bots
- Runaway Train (king of the hill but the hill is a moving train)
- Snow Wars
- Bumpercars

Ones I can't find downloads for and would love some help:

- Box Wars
- ArcHL
- Hyperpuck
- Turbo (a snark racing mod made by randomnine)
- rocket crowbar (good call Liku)

And if you know any more, shoot. Try and keep them in the same ballpark (ie: no HL2 stuff). And I will be throwing these up once I have them, in the off chance anyone else wants them easily.

Rocket Crowbar? Other than that I can't remember any of the low-key MP Mods.

Box and Snow Wars were both awesome.

I might have an old installer lurking around. I will look for it, but cannot promise the most recent version.

Edit: You might want to add Wizard Wars to the wars <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I remember when I started up a boxwars listenserver when it first came out. This was at my parent's place on their 512/128 ADSL. People were joining from all over the world with 600 ping and chopping like mad.

    Super fun though.

Box Wars was cool, until I discovered the super ultra lame exploit of sitting perfectly still on the sniper rifle and aiming down the only path, instakilling anyone entering the room.

Wizard Wars did pwn pretty hard, but good luck getting that to work with Steam... or even finding it.

Isn't there an Onos/Marine model for BumperCars that someone 'round here made?

IIRC boxwars doesn't run on steam and no one has got it working. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

I used to play all of them except for arcHL and hyperpuck (never heard of them)

Did anyone play Half-Life 2: Jaykin' Bacon: Source? (really a half life 1 mod, not a half life 2 one) That was the most fun "fun" mod I ever played simply because it blantantly ripped off every other mod. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Edit: OPEN SOURCE JAILBREAK :!OOOO

"Capture the team"! Killed players respawn in the other team's jail with only a crowbar. With enough players in the jail, they can attempt to escape through a vent or something so the other team has to guard the prisoners and make sure they don't hit the release button. Capture a whole team and they are all executed (different maps have different execution methods ^______^

    Edit2: Science and Industry!

Capture the rival corporation's scientists and sabotage their equipment to stay ahead of the enemy. Players vote on the next piece of equipment/technology/weapon to research. Fun!

    Edit3: Canned Tuna!

Do not remember much at all! Only had 5 weapons and no maps. But was fun.

    Edit4: Existence

As much of a rip off of Matrix 1 as they could get away with without Fox suing them. Only had 1 map which was rescuing "Dr. White" (morpheus) from Neurotek headquarters. You can use the phone lines to travel around the map. :O

Yes and it was included with the game. I'm not sure who made it though.

I know there used to be some old western style one that came in a bundle with CS way back when.

I've since lost the case for it, so no name.

    Gunman Chronicles?
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
    It's not a mod, though. It's a standalone game.

Yup, but only mod that was sold that sort of fits the description albeit barely.

There was also a super hero mod but I cannot remember what it was called.

    Battle of the Millennium!

never played much in the way of HL1 mods. the quake 1 mod era was the one I experienced the most of. team fortress and whatnot. another mod I will never forget was Strangelove for UT. you got to ride the redeemer and it was awesome.

So HL isn't even a game, huh? It's just a mod of Quake.

During the conversation in IRC I had completely forgotten this one: <a href="http://www.telefragged.com/thefatal/old/scihunt.shtml" target="_blank">Scientist Hunt</a>

Its extremely complicated premise is you hunt down and kill HL scientists. You get a big hammer and a chainsaw, plus the HL crowbar, pistol and shotgun. Some of the levels include extra traps for you to use to squish or otherwise dispose of the scientists.

I just loaded it up now on Steam and it seems to work fine, you'll probably need to grab it from <a href="http://rapidshare.com/files/31315585/shunt12.exe" target="_blank">Rapidshare</a> or somewhere similar.

Holy Wars! That's a good, old HL mod. I have fond memories of playing instagib against my friends at a LAN. Or the shotgun. That was a monster of a shotgun.

Meh.... old mods to me are silly ones like Box wars, or Firearms and Svencoop. I haven't looked at FA or Svencoop in a very long time though.

I can't believe Science and Industry has had only one mention. It was pretty fun. The Specialists, while probably not coming under the category of an "old mod" is still a damn fun HL1 mod.

    You're thinking of 'Wanted!'.
I've tried a couple downloads, and so far <a href="http://files.filefront.com/Wanted+v2+Mod/;3636239;/fileinfo.html" target="_blank">this</a> is the first to work right with steam. If someone has a better link, please post. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I'm pretty sure <a href="http://files.filefront.com/Rocket+Crowbar+Version+20+Beta/;1736629;/fileinfo.html" target="_blank">this</a> is the newest version of the original RC. <a href="http://rcrowbar.com/" target="_blank">http://rcrowbar.com/</a> has a remake done by Rukia, but I've never tried it.

'<a href="http://mods.moddb.com/389/grenades-snarks-teleporters/" target="_blank">Grenades, Snarks, and Teleporters</a>' (GST) was really crashy, but is fun to mess around with on a LAN. Just don't use the 'finger of dewm' on players and it's bearable, though.
    I also remember liking <a href="http://mods.moddb.com/511/vampire-slayer/" target="_blank">VampireSlayer</a> a lot.
    Oh, and I second 'Scientist Hunt' as great mindless fun. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

[edit]I just found a copy of archl lying around and uploaded it <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?atjbbdmvkbm" target="_blank">here</a>.

While S&I is great fun, it is prolly too deep to match Comprox' request. Same goes most likely for Wizard Wars and PVK.

    Yeah, Wanted was it.

I used to know of an old RPG mod called MasterSword, they released a steam variant lately, but it was okay.

(Quest was supposed to come out.)

Yah I know all about S&I but like it was stated it was a little too in depth for mindless fun. Although it never hurts to mention such a good mod! I shall update the list tonight with what I have when I get home.

scientist hunt was so awesome. "Stop attacking! He's a friend!" my GF and I still quote the scientists all the time thanks to that mod...

I know we're supposed to be talking about HL1 mods, but anyone remember what the RPG mod for quake 1 was called? it was so awesome at the time. I would say it was at least better than Dark Messiah of Might and Magic =p I remember there was a pirate ship level, and i was really impressed at how they fudged the view of a distant landscape through the ship's portholes, moving with the simulated motion of the ship... seemed so uber considering it was still the mid-90's.

Is available as separate DL in steam.
    So it is not lost.

    Thus said: THE PIT ^^

I am pretty serious. If you invert the scoring system (Push other in the pit and avoid falling down yourself) then its some great quick fun, that will last a good 10 minutes before it becomes stall.
