<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone playing it?</div>Well, hey! some may know me as the guy moving to the usa <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> that plan still stands <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> i have my passport etc, and now im just waiting till after labor day to fly out, cos tickets get cheaper! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> and im tight.

So. for the moment, im living back at my family home outside london, bored as %^?k for 2 weeks whilst i have nothing to do. im a little bored of wow, due to being an officer in a raid guild, it turns into drama. more then fun.

SO! i was looking around for a diff game. something that will run on my pos PC. (3 gig amd, 1 gig ram, 128 mb vid card etc) its not that good, but hey, it works.

i came across the obvious, planetside! i tried this years and years ago. when i was like 18? i think? so around 4 years roughly, maybe a little after.. and it wasnt bad, but it didnt.. grab me.

but! my question to you now, since i cant find much info on it, is it worth checking out? for a couple of weeks of enjoyment? or do i have to REALLY play alot to get something from it?

<a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/79/product/Buy-PlanetSide®:-Aftershock-Download" target="_blank">http://www.direct2drive.com/79/product/Buy...rshock-Download</a>

is the link, if anyone wants information on it..

Also, feel free to suggest other games i might enjoy <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> im not like alot of people on the ns boards who all seem to be hyper intelligent, im dumb as a sack of rocks. mindless violence is fine. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Mindless Violence? We can supply that!
    Serious Sam?
Pain Killer (I think it is still $10 on steam)?

On the note of Planet side:
It is kinda nifty, but really lightly populated.

If the Reserves program was still active I would tell you to go do that in a heartbeat, but they kileld it unfortunately.

    You could check out:
<a href="http://www.station.sony.com/casualProduct.vm?Id=039" target="_blank">Infantry</a> and <a href="http://www.station.sony.com/casualProduct.vm?Id=040" target="_blank">Tanarus</a>. Also Sony games, but these have gone free to play.

everyone always speaks fondly of Planetside but no one ever plays it...

I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. but I was poor and couldn't afford a subscription. and then when I tried it again, I couldn't get back into it...

I dislike the perpetually bad netcode. Sadly, the HL2 engine with it's corner-defying bullets has nothing on this engine, where I have been KILLED before I even saw someone turn the corner. For every really good element in the game, there is also another annoying glaring undersight staring it in the face, and sadly the netcode is only the start of it. Planetside is a great game, but it also was balanced by chimpanzees, has terrible netcode, and a resource hogging engine.

And yet I can still think of it as a good game. That should tell you how good it would be if they would solve these problems and they persist to refuse.

2nd. I had a gig of ram when it first came out, at the time people were asking my WHY DO YOU NEED THAT MUCH RAM lol. Yea, simply to say it wasn't enough.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
It's a RAM hog. HOG. A gig is good, two are better. And before you say that isn't much, consider the game's age. And it has a large array of issues that spoiled the experience for me in the end. Still, it was a good game, and I had a fine time for the seven months I played it, and that was after its "heyday."

But while the game has issues aplenty, the netcode isn't something I had trouble with, myself. Maybe it was because the game had declining subscribers, but even with a three-way "poplock" (i.e. the maximum amount of people on a continent possible), I never noticed severe netcode trouble. That you could have a ping of 100 or even less with 499 people on the same continent speaks for itself.
However, one situation where the netcode had trouble was in large base assaults, there's no denying that. Still, I think that considering that you had upwards of a hundred people fighting in the same location, it's a testament to the <i>strength</i> of the netcode that it was at all possible to have these fights, and to have them tolerably fluidly most of the time.

All in all, I think Planetside is unfairly derided. It was a bold, ambitious project. It's the very first generation of MMOFPS games, and considering that it had to partially invent the genre, it's not that bad. Ultimately, as a game, it falls short, which is why I no longer play it.

Still, I'd love a Planetside 2. Keep the basic formula - keep the game futuristic, keep it completely PvP-oriented, just balance it and polish, polish, polish.

I never really believed in it, but I hoped that Blizzard would make a Starcraft MMOFPS, not yet another crappy rts. I fear that MMOFPS, the way I love and want it, died with the fiscal fiasko of Planetside.

Planetside and it's client side hit prediction gave me headaches many a time. Quickest route to exploits and hacks. Still I had fun when I played it on my brother's account, through various 2 week trials, and eventually the Reservist program, until my graphics upgrade made Planetside die within minutes of starting <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Exploits and hacks indeed. Right around the time I quit, hacks began to run rampant through the game. Due to so much stuff being handled clientside, people made up all sorts of creative hacks. From flying ground vehicles to MCGs with no recoil and pin-point accuracy to people teleporting into generator rooms in an AV MAX, they did it all. And it'd probably have happened a lot sooner if Planetside had had more success. More players = more cheaters. Cheating isn't fun without an audience.

I wouldn't be so sure. I'm following a certain indie MMOFPS which is beginning to look VERY promising. Yes I know how that sounds and I'm <i>quite</i> aware how many indie games disappear into obscurity after a few months, but I can say with near certainty that <i>something</i> good is going to come of this one.

I was deliberately avoiding linking to the site of said game because frankly there isn't much to see. Its not done yet, not nearly done, and while I'm pretty confident that something good will come out of it, I don't want to get people's hopes up. Y'know, just in case.

But I guess if you're thoroughly prepared to see little more than a forum filled with two years of ideas, suggestions and arguements, <a href="http://www.versusthegame.com" target="_blank">here you go.</a>

They need a new game. I suggest "Engagement: Solar Conflict." Perhaps "Competition: Galactic Strife." Or "Star War."

Oi, and it looks like at least some of those devs are clueless. $1,500 for a character model? They're either being scammed or scamming anyone donating.

Yeah, this kind of reaction is exactly why I didn't want to put a link up. You see the donation button, you see the game's title and you <i>assume</i> things. I don't pretend to know the intricacies of modeling, let alone designing an MMO, so I can't tell you why $1,500. But that's the nice thing about Versus; you can just go ask the developers. And I have.

Basically I'd appreciate it if you didn't bash the game until there's something there to bash.

Their justification for one and a half grand was basically "it only costs 25 cents per poly!" which is ridculous on a number of levels. First, they added together the various levels of detail to get the polycount, which is a silly way that does not at all approximate the work a modeller does on the model. Second, 25 cents a poly is an awful price. That would make the price of the buggy in Half-Life 2 $2,500, and the cost of a boring old barrel or crate almost $250. Nobody would ever work for free on a mod making character and weapon models if they could get hundreds of dollars for each one they did, epecially at the quality the devs for VS are paying for. Either the VS devs are getting scammed, or they're doing the scamming. They seem quite open, so I can't imagine they're going to fly off in to the distance with the cash, but whoever's doing the art has himself a nice deal set up.

EVE's the kind of game that's worth trying once, at the very least. They do plenty of things differently, it's free as in Willy and for some people it sucks them in. If you don't like it (like me!) then hey, nothing lost, at least you didn't have to grind a whole bunch like in Archlord or something, but if you do end up enjoying it, then it was totally a good idea! Unless a weird series of coincidences leads to your death via EVE Online but that's unlikely.

They're both in space and have "PEW PEW LASERS", that's enough for me. I only played eve for < 2 weeks, but it felt like WoW in space, which is BLARGH.

Anyway, to at least say something on topic; I got bored of planetside long ago. I got it at release, played it for a few months suffering from bad, bad, <i>bad</i> framerates, but I coped. It got boring quite fast, it was just "ATTACK ZEE NEXT BAES" (or defend) all the time. The only thing that was remotely fun was running around killing newbies while stealthed.

WOW in space huh? Did you even play the god damn game? Wow's quest grinding and grinding in general with the occasional raid(more so when your higher level), EVE has massive emphasis on group PVP, and its all about risk vs. reward, its nothing like WOW in any effect, where dying has little consequence and most fighting is done vs. NPC's while in eve its other players(Unless ofcourse, you prefer to sit around killing NPC rats for insane amounts of cash.)

If you want WOW in space, have a look at star wars galaxies, but I think thats more <i>everquest</i> in space then anything, regardless honestly, coming from a player that just recently quit eve after playing for almost 2-3 years, you obviously weren't playing it right or you were playing it with your eyes closed.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
If WoW was like EVE, you could get to level 70 just by logging in for 10 minutes every week or so. There would also be one giant server instead of 60 smaller ones, and instead of all the locations being either Horde, Alliance, or PVP, they'd change based on who's in charge. And there would be no Horde or Alliance, just guilds. And everything worth buying would be player-made. And there would be like a thousand other differences.

EVE is nothing like WoW, except perhaps the monthly fee and everyone rolling shaman.

That said, they were planning on bringing back the "Semi-Free" program in a month or so.
