Open area ideas

With the possibility of open areas in NS2 some gameplay elements have to addressed to maintain balance over the large distances between the player and their enemy. The team that would benefit the most from open environments would be Aliens with better speed than Marines. So a possibility of small and large transports would be a good option. Thus far, the best idea would be a dropship with upgradeable weapons slots that the passengers would be able to use. This unit would cost more than a Marine Phase Gate at about 25 to 40 resources but would act as an offensive and defensive transport with up to three available at a time, at most, depending on the map.

This is just an idea.

I <i>strongly</i> disagree that aliens are at advantage at open environments. Marines got the ranged weapons, with little cover for aliens I cant see how they are going to make it at all.
I rather wonder how they will make aliens able to roam around without constantly getting blown out of the air.

Well, that is in terms of traveling. In terms of battle, it all depends on terrain. In forested areas Aliens would have an upper hand with cover and speed, enabling them to outflank a group of Marines who would be easy targets without choke points to hold off an Alien attack forcing them to close range weapons to maximize damage efficiency. Once in more open areas, the Marines stand a better chance than in forests.

maybe we'll see something like this in NS3, but i doubt it will be in NS2

Well a forested area is hardly open terrain - it would be similar to corridors. Open terrain to me sounds like sand dunes where you can see a long distance.

Dunno how forests would fit in the Universe of NS. TSA engages Kharaa in places humanity/government want cleaned and for further use afterwards. Otherwise they would just have nuked it all into oblivion, as they would do with forests.

Nevertheless, NS2 will most likely have a great deal of new information regarding its universe/situation.

The marines could be scouting the forest for some other reason and get ambushed by the Kharaa and the drop ship isn't scheduled to come back for a while. Scenarios can easily be manufactured, but I thought I had read that outdoor maps were out of this coming version of NS somewhere...

The only place I think we will see forest areas in NS2 are in Bio domes. I would love to see a map where a huge area of it was a bio dome on a space ship or something. But not a forest, more like a jungle in a bio dome. Maybe it’s a GM crop facility (I’m guessing that the TSA Marines don’t eat Organic food that often) or just a way of feeding/oxygenating a mining facility, or even a place where rare species of animals have been brought for safe keeping (a zoo <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />) only to find that a collected species of Kharaa have escaped from the labs at the other end of the dome and set up hives in the labs and the dome itself, killing off the animals in the dome. This could be a lot of fun for map designers and model designers alike. Because of all the corpses of rare animals in the map that might never been seen before. If not on the ground of the dome but in storage takes in the labs, think Alien Resurrection. I would imagine though that if I was designing a map like this I would try and avoid putting in really gory corpses, just to keep the rating down. Dead rare animals = silly idea??

But assuming we do end up having open areas in NS2, which I think we all know is very unlikely, what kind of thing would people like to see? Any ideas for maps, perhaps ice worlds, fiery landscapes, rocky moons or completely mechanical worlds? What would you like to see? Give some details behind your idea!

P.S. the9thdude, currently the Kharaa (mainly skulks) loose out in open environments even small ones like hallways in space. They lack long range attacks and need to hide to avoid dieing from distant shots from Marines; it’s what vents are made for <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I think that for NS2 I don't think they will be having many outdoor areas. I think I remember reading somewhere that the dev team wants to conserve the indoor techy feel of NS1.

Personally I would want to have a charred landscape to play on or a sandy, tared landscape (like the Desert and Ashworld tile sets of Starcraft 1).

    Forest are a valuable commodity?
Plaster bombing any part of a planet that you want to inhabit is generally a bad idea (it screws up the ecosystem).

And any one have a link to where they said no out door areas? I seem to remember that was an idea that was in the works for NS2 (obviously, this could have changed <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />)

Imagen this: a few skulks are making their way to munch some marine legs, fingers, ears, etc. and then all of a sudden... Swooooooom! 3 Marines with JETPACKS comes flying above the trees with grenade launchers and one with a HMG, randomly shooting into the forest below! The poor hungry skulks would die hungry and the lerky lerks would have a hard time attacking because of the HMG.... *sniff* so sad.... D=

Imagine this, advanced life forms of the Kharaa make a meal out of marine flying above the trees.

I'm just saying that the current game of NS1 is not necissarily going to be the game of NS2, and areas that are open should not be so readily dismissed.

Personally, if I were the Kharaa, and I had to close the distance in an open area I would either:
    1) devise a method of camouflage to approach unnoticed, say for example cloak.
    2) use a large number of expendable troops, say for example babblers.
    3) forget the open area, draw them into the jungle where you have an ambush ready.
    4) evolve into a life form with the ability to do ranged combat, perhaps even a method of artillery indirect fire to blast at them from cover.

Or any of number of other methods we observe in nature all the time.

Just saying, I am not big on discounting ideas at this point just yet.
