Custom Loading Screens

<div class="IPBDescription">Something like the ship's or Battlefield 2...</div>Most source games just employ the standard loading screen, but the ship has a nice one where it shows a picture of the map your about to play.

NS2 should have something like that. To expand on it, it should be more like BattleField 2's or Enemy Territory's. Show a picture or overhead view of the map, some server info, and the server rules.

While it is a useful feature, it remains very low on my personal list of priorities.

    would be nice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

aswell as a mission briefing on the loading screen - would be useless on ns1 cause people fast pc's maps load in about 3 seconds. but source takes a fair bit longer - of course you can always have a "i'm ready button" so that you can read it if you want

I agree. The default progress bar/black screen is boring. A custom loading screen is a layer of polish that we'll definitely consider.

It'd be a nice touch to show the map you're about to play on and a brief backstory blurb. I'm for this idea.

Ofcourse its a low priority; its a loading screen.

    Like Warcraft III or BF1942 loading screens? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Yes great idea on the loading screen. Add the same info/map to the readyroom for those who have fast computers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Or maybe add schkorpio "I'm ready button", where you also can tick off a box to automatically do this from now on.

only down side with something like the bf2 loading screen is that after about 3 goes of the map you aren't going to want to read the story again.

So why not display some interesting information about that map on that particular server
    something like,

-how many times its been played
    -the longest match
    -highest scoring fade
    -most accurate marine

EDIT - perhaps even one that if a commander builds lots of turrets, he will get labeled a turtle <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I think load screens with game tips are the way to go. Works great in UT and NS is exactly the kind of game where tips can really help new players.

The Quake Wars loading screen is pretty nice. It shows a little back story on the map, then rotates through some different hints at the bottom of the screen.

    I would love to see the newbie help screen everytime I load a map <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
map overview should be easy and i agree on it.

Im all for a full screen map overview, I've missed this several times when playing new maps.

For extra flavor it should be in 3d.

That might increase the difficultly for NS "prosumers", no? I thought you were for efficiency rather than artistic atmosphere Svenpa judging from how you have responded to other ideas.

    "prosumers"?

Instead of just copying off the c-button map I thought it should be in 3d both for diversity and for attractiveness. A 3d map would mean that you can see somethings, mainly routes, but also get a feeling on the depth inside every room, being able to locate vents before you run in to a otherwise backstabby death. Of course, this would also mean some things will be hidden behind walls and whatnot.

A 2d map would be, as you said, more efficient but less of a eye catcher.

not much constructive post, but we always have an option to add a toggle: loading screen for a new player with hints and 2d detailed view and backstory, and a screen for veterans with server stats and 3d view of the map or whatever a mapper puts in its place ;d xxx ? ;p i wonder which should go for a default one ;p
