Area of denial will be important to both sides. Aliens have Dynamic Infestation; marines have Flamethrowers. What wrong with balancing that? Having both affect the physical atmosphere adds a huge new layer of territory control, strategy, and immersion.

Very cool.

Off-Topic, but sorta related:
That's bio-chemically, well, ignorant. Sorry but you need to be informed it seems that CO2 is a LOW potential energy molecule where as O2 is quite reactive indeed. The Kharaa aren't trees either, they are more animal and fungi like than plant. Especially for the "lifeforms" they grow and evolve <i>insanely</i> fast and move very fast too. All that activity requires insane amounts of chemical energy to be released. You have to ADD energy into CO2 to use it, you RELEASE energy when you burn or catalyze something in oxygen. Please think your logic out on something like that before you post, or please don't post.

problem with that is, and alot of other things are - aliens do something, marines counter it. where there really needs to be a true paper rock scissors balance

i think for the flamer to ge effective, it needs to have a PUSH force so that aliens can't just run through the flames, effectivily it be like a shield,

-slow burn rate of damage to aliens,
-double or triple or even quad against buildings,
-flames push skulks and gorges away from player
-good for clearing vents, infestation, and WOL

perhaps primary attack = long but thin flame (maximum offense)
secondary attack = short but wide flame (maximum protection)
holding both does something inbetween?

you could even do it so its dynamic i guess, hold primary fire to lenghthen and thin the flame until its reached its maximum lenght and thinnes, and then hold secondary fire to widen it to your liking..

the game is a bit too fast paced for setting traps for that to be of any use imo
as mentioned above, yes gorgies would need to be able to extinguish <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

....It's taken 4 pages of replies for someone to bring that up. Potential for explosion if bit, etc. is a MAJOR factor. Essentially, a flamer by himself would be completely worthless because, say, one skulk bite in the back would burst him into flames, or perhaps cause a huge explosion. Also, shooting flames creates a large amount of noise, so a flamer wouldn't be able to hear a skulk running up behind him. Also, a skulk's xenocide, if it hits a flamer, would increase damage massively.

Yeah, the flamethrower should either have a fairly specific use or should require lots of skill to master.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I agree. I would like to see a bit more variety in squads, and the flamethrower could be a way to introduce that.

The way NS1 plays out, you usually see commanders drop the same equipment for the whole team in order to respond to a particular situation. While that is a good strategy, you continuously see a range of forms on the alien team, which as a result responds more dynamically. A solution might be to make the various weapons a bit more specialized so as to make them all more viable against particular opponents.

The shotgun could become even better at defending against skulks, the GL still optimal for structures... These are trends we currently see, but emphasizing that with the flamethrower would oblige a squad of five, for example, to be using 3-4 different weapon types, rather than just one (as it is currently). The flamethrower already seems to have its niche as a counter to infestation and a way to target aliens in vents but perhaps it could also have a greater effect on lerks since they would have much more surface area exposed to flames in comparison to their body weight.

Something to think about in any case.

Good points RuBy. Still, I really want to see the equivical of the flamethrower be dynamic infestation.

Maybe the flamethrower have a "health bar", thats a good point(marines can use it to, more fire[fire inferno exploding], more D.I. will killed)

Wrong.

1. It would leak the fuel
2. If the fuel was pressurized and then was punctured he'd shoot off like a rocket. For evidence of this take the Mythbuster's Jaws episode where they are trying to test the exploding scuba tank when shot by a gun. The gun did make a hole but the compressed air caused it to act like a rocket engine where ever that hole was. It only exploded when they put C4 on it to rupture the whole tank all at once.
3. If the fuel became ignited the marine would become incinetated in a fireball and burn alive with his flesh pealing off his skin with the distinctive smell of burning mammalian flesh (mmm just like steak). But he would NOT explode because the fuel is burning in oxygen AFTER it leaves the tank.

<!--quoteo(post=1635264:date=Jun 22 2007, 05:00 PM:name=Underpants_Gnome)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Underpants_Gnome @ Jun 22 2007, 05:00 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also, shooting flames creates a large amount of noise, so a flamer wouldn't be able to hear a skulk running up behind him.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Have you ever used a flamethrower? They are disturbingly quiet when they are using a liquid fuel. It's like a water gun except usually it's napalm (a condensed form of gasoline). It's a narrow "beam" of liquid that really only fans out where it looses kinetic energy. We aren't talking of the noise of a roaring bonfire here with crackling embers, it's more of a quiet faucet sound with the gentle lapping sound of the flame. The closest thing I can think of is the high-temperature burn mode for a hot air balloon (the blue flame that uses fuel preheated by the coils).

<!--quoteo(post=1635264:date=Jun 22 2007, 05:00 PM:name=Underpants_Gnome)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Underpants_Gnome @ Jun 22 2007, 05:00 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also, a skulk's xenocide, if it hits a flamer, would increase damage massively.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Now this is possible, not likely, but plausable assuming one thing in particular: the fuel tank is pressurized like a scuba tank. Xenocide is a massive octanitrocubane explosion and if it happened right on or with in arm's length of the fuel pack and it was a pressurized fuel then yes the marine would explode and a secondary fireball would engulf the area as all the fuel burns up, devoiding the whole area of oxygen. In fact the explosion would probably be minor compared to the more widespread effects of the extreme heat from all that heat and rapid consumption of available oxygen.

/me thinks of igniting a group of marines like the zombies when they are burning in HL2

That x5 likes fancy words.

Simply put, it's a sort of explosion which can cause a pressurized tank to explode if detonated near enough.

How about 3 weld points scattered around the map would enable the room where you get the flametrower, it would then be used to burn away infestation (and do moderate dmg vs aliens). The trower would respawn every 10 minutes incase you lost it.

If the flamethrower explodes then won't that just encourage groups of flamethrower marines walking up to the hive and just exploding near it? It seems to me that exploding flamethrowers would just encourage these kamikaze rushes. This is unlike a xenocide rush since the skulk has to avoid taking damage and cannot afflict the massive amount of damage that a flamethrower can while getting to its target.
I would rather just see the marine burst into a pillar of flames instead of exploding.

Ok, but seriously now the masses have been asking for this for a long time and it has been said that it wouldn't be implemented until it looked like a real flamethrower; I believe the phrase Charlie said was that he wanted it to be volumetric. A real Vietnam Era flamethrower, this is the US Navy "Zippo"
<img src="http://vietnamresearch.com/flame/info/flamethrower-boat.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

The basic idea of a flamethrower is to spread fire by launching burning fuel. Working flamethowers launching liquid fuels that burn in a oxygen atmosphere date back prior to another technological advancement in weaponry we already know about -- gunpowder. So it's some really ol' school tech; I'd fit right in there with the feel and gritty badarse attitude of Natural-Selection's TSA Marines.

<a href="http://static.howstuffworks.com/flash/flamethrower-animation.swf" target="_blank">A simple flash animation of how a flamethower like that would work.</a> Keep in mind that our TSA would have some good advancements and perhaps even make this as a researchable attachement to a weapon and/or armor. Balancing factors might include making it a higher tier tech item and having limited fuel that could take time to reload or could not be reloadable at all. Just some ideas. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
