<div class="IPBDescription">Initial thoughts/impressions?</div>Yep, <a href="http://www.insmod.net/" target="_blank">Insurgency</a> is about to release (in approximately, well NOW according to an official statement). So I thought I'd make a thread so this mod gets some decent feedback and attention. It's really disappointing when years of work amount to months of play because somehow mods slip under the radar.

Realistically I don't think Insurgency will be one of those mods, but I thought I'd make sure that everyone is aware that probably the biggest mod for Source so far (arguably bigger than Dystopia but this is yet to be seen) is near enough released. Anyway, the guys over at INS have put a lot of hard work into it so I'm sure they'd appreciate any feedback you have to offer. Hence the thread.

So get downloading! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I finally come through to the DL page and I can verify that its due to july, 1st.

Why do people make release threads when there has been no release thread?

    Whats next?

    So, what is this about?

A modern, tactical, squad-based urban warfare/desert combat shooter, right?

So I can't expect any novel/unusual weapons. We'll have our M4, maybe an M16 to spice things up, the MP5, the SAW which may or may not suck, a sniper rifle probably, maybe an RPG launcher. And assorted handguns, which will (justly so) serve as backup weapons only. Nothing new, move on.

Tactical. Tactical generally means "movement and stance affects your accuracy," which translates into "if two guys meet and one of them is already crouching, he wins." Predictably, this means that combat will be a very slow war of attrition at chokepoints, except those chokepoints where somebody will make a flanking maneuver and push the other team back - to a chokepoint where flanking isn't possible, where the remaining twenty minutes of the round will be spent.

Squad-based. Squad-based means "working together is good!" It always is, of course. But on a public server, nobody works together. The most cooperation you'll see is a medic healing somebody, maybe.

Urban warfare/desert combat. This means that all the maps look the same, and all of them are lackluster. And the colour scheme is grey and yellow.

Basically, this is the part where I tell you that this mod looks sucky and doesn't seem to stand out in any way. The next post is you telling me that I'm talking out of my arse and why this mod will be better than all others. No HL2 mod has really consistently made it big so far, why should this one?

Looks like BF2? Maybe, but I believe it started development before we all knew about BF2.

I for one welcome this mod as it is one of the first of many decent looking and polished HL2 mods to hit the scene.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><some internet person> I think there are a few maps that are still being compiled
<some internet person> and the coders basically have until those are done to finish the code

<some internet person> they were trying to get the VGUI in last night
<some internet person> which ###### up everythign and all the weapons were invisible or something<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><some internet person> I am considering whether I should leak Insurgency or not
    <some internet person> I should shouldn't I
<some internet person> well I just got fired and banned from all the channels
    <some internet person> har
<some internet person> Jeremy is delaying INS until July because Fileplanet want to be exclusive hosts
<some internet person> I naturally disagreed with this moronic decision
    <some internet person> and here I am
    <some internet person>
<some internet person> but it's either June 30th or July 1st or whenever really
<some internet person> He can't make his mind up
<some internet person> he gave me lots of ###### for suggesting we release in July, so we can really finish it. I suggested we not rush release it
<some internet person> then he delays it anyway
    <some internet person> I was not amused
<some internet person> because they will be "Hyping it" for three days prior to release
    <some internet person> Jeremy is a ######
<some internet person> you have to understand this
<some internet person> A lot of the devs are considering quitting on release
<some internet person> and my recent dismissal has pissed off a lot of people
<some internet person> so we'll see what happens
    <some internet person> ;D
<some internet person> one door opens and another closes.... sigh
<some internet person> but I like to think i did good by standing up for the community. It's not right that he break the June promise when he doesn't have to
<some internet person> the mod will be good, but a lot of stuff is being saved for post release
<some internet person> because Jeremy announced June when we were clearly not ready
<some internet person> like the ######tard he is
<some internet person> Everytime i said we were making a mistake, he would tell me to shut the ###### up
<some internet person> so it's on his head.
<some internet person> i wouldn't go back if he asked me, the community backlash is going to be fun
<some internet person> well i told the guy getting our motion capturing ingame that Jeremy hates him
<some internet person> Jeremy wanted him to do animations, but not give him developer access "because he wasnt very good"
<some internet person> so he was still a tester but doing all this work
<some internet person> then he figures out how to get motion capture stuff ingame, which Jeremy's been sitting on for the last 2 years
<some internet person> but yeah, Jeremy animates and does a lot of stuff himself
<some internet person> so he probably didnt want ET to become a developer because then he wouldn't really be doing much as mod lead other than bossing people around
<some internet person but ET is far better than him, and he refused to put his stuff ingame.
<some internet person> he made this whole fileplanet decision by himself
<some internet person> some of the devs have their head right up his ass, but others see this as a bad idea
<some internet person> so the final build is going to be June 30th, with a "day of testing" and then we release July 1st. Because, you know. We only need a day to test the final build.
<some internet person> it's going to be a rushed piece of ######. When it has the potential to be so much better
<some internet person> I'm all "Jeremy if we're breaking our June promise, we may as well release a few weeks later. You're selling out to fileplanet and breaking your promise" and he comes back with some illogical ###### like " The community doesn't care about June! they just want to play the mod ASAP!!! STFU!!!"
<some internet person> we've made more progress in the last three weeks than i've seen in the past year of testing<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yeah, go die in a fire and burn forever.

I love how INS decides to release literally the day before I leave for 2 and a half freaking weeks to a land significantly closer to <i>actual</i> insurgencies. Just my luck, eh? It's going to be torture every minute knowing that I'm missing out.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->esuna's mystery logs<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->That's quite bad. The fileplanet thing isn't that dire, it's not like it's gonna piss the average person for any more than a day at most, it just means an extra 3 hours wait. If you can have reliable filehosting for what is bound to be quite a hefty download for 3 hours exclusivity, it's understandable. It also means you don't have to put so much pressure on your own and your community's hosting, so less broken links.

The stuff about a day of testing the final build and compiling maps and throwing in the VGUI at the last minute is... worrying. You're asking for last minute hitches there.

Oh, and the thing about devs leaving on release. That's understandable depending on who they are. A lot of artists won't really have a huge amount of work to do after release unless there are plans to keep producing official maps and additional content instead of selecting the best from the community. Plus artists are the easiest to replace, especially if you're recruiting for a released and popular mod. They'll be all over it like white on rice. If it's the lead coder leaving and there's no apprentice then you could be in trouble.

I was about to ask where he was. Not as a suspect, but because, well, he's a PR guy who seems to be very negative when he drops by these forums. He probably has something interesting to say, but whether he says it (or has said it) or not is something else.

Oh, and it's probably best to ignore the e-drama. It sounds halfway reasonable and the other half an attempt to sour our enthusiasm and fun.

Don't ask me anything about those logs, i'm just passing on information from other forums, and i felt it was a good read. I don't know the backstory to them, who's talking or anything about them really.

It's not like they spelled out that the mod will be terrible and everything will be botched, it's just a bit unnerving if everything was hashed together so quickly at the last minute with little playtesting, which could mean things like balance issues and game crippling bugs could crop up with little knowledge.
  • semipsychoticsemipsychotic Join Date: 2003-07-09 Member: 18061Members
That's cool. As long as we take it as that--a warning to be careful when first playing the game, and not to expect perfection--we'll be fine. Too much further and we'll walk into the game expecting to hate it, and that's no fun.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
it's the games I went in expecting to hate that usually impress me the most... but that's probably the advantage of having low expectations; it's hard for them to go lower :3
