Half-Hour Half-Life
<div class="IPBDescription">Speed run of HL1 in 31 minutes. Wow.</div>As always, I checked the front page of <a href="http://speeddemosarchive.com/news.html" target="_blank">SDA</a> and today they finally posted the half-hour speed run of Half-Life! While I've seen it in atrocious quality on Google Video, I'm watching a 1.07 GB file of it. It comes in all different <a href="http://speeddemosarchive.com/demo.pl?HalfLife_hard_3100" target="_blank">flavors</a>, including torrents for the normal quality.
It's nuts. There's some use of scripts, but still there's still an insane amount of skill.
The beginning induces some lulz as he boosts off a Vortigaunt into the window of the test room. Among the fun includes:
- Skipping all of the "We've got Hostiles" chapter.
- Grenade Boost to 1 HP.
- Insane speed from bunny hopping. (How the hell do people even control such speeds?)
- Using ladders to break enormous falls.
- Exploiting friendly NPCs to open locked doors.
- Snark hoppin'!
I don't know who else watches speed runs like I do, but I just thought I'd notify the Half-Life community we have here.

Also, this guy does some of the mst impressive jumps I've seen in the Half-Life engine
And archive.org is crap now a days.
Really enjoyable watch.
wtfbbq @ 11:10, 12:00,.. I'll just stop now, the whole thing is insane.
impressive... i think this one is more recent
Thus said: I really enjoyed the run, although I favor single segment runs.
But there are a few bits I don't understand. How does he maintain speed both in water and on ladders? Why is the Xen soldier not where he's supposed to be in the test chamber that lets him make that jump? Why does the door remain open in we've got hostiles? There seem to be a lot of sections where he stops to talk to scientists that fouls up the scripting and map triggers, but I don't understand how that works...
Given the massive use of scripts I don't think the 3 years this guy's put into making this speed run are that justified, so I'm glad they put it in a new category. A good watch though.
Well I know that the doors are forced open be NPCs if the door is in the way of the scientist/Barney. So in "We've Got Hostiles" he stops that first scientist from running into the trip mines. Then he pushes him into the locked door and opens the door to "Blast Pit" immediately. Since the whole Hostiles chapter just requires you to get into that room via a long and complex series of halls and vents to get into that one room, he exploits it right from the get-go skipping it.

The demos are from an outdated version of the engine. That makes me sad, and makes me wonder why they would even post them. I don't even know if it's possible to get an old version of the half life engine. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Dude probably has the original disc still lying around.
EDIT- Oh, you mean and older version of the HL1 engine under steam. Well, if you read the news on the front page of speedruns, it says that this speedrun has been sitting in the vault "forever"
Good to see this.
Question being, what did those one eye'd handheld bug weapons do?
Heh, I never did beat HL1 before.

Wow, I don't know who let you on to the Internet, but go see them and tell them they have to confiscate your modem and your Interlicense. You're suspended indefinitely until you finish Half-Life.

Well, do you know babblers?
Babblers work with the snark code behind them.
They normally bounce around and attack everything until they explode.
In CPMA you can go from a standstill to moving faster than 60% of that video in under half a second. So yeah, it's not particularly impressive once you've seen some promode flagruns, which are kinda similar except with bs rocketjump/boost precision.
Did anyone else came?

Your sexual tense is shameful.
It looks like he uses quick-loadings.
