The ranking system was such an incredibly good idea, it's kept me playing for so much longer than I would have otherwise. You've got the military rank, which inspires you to undergo trials of skill without trying to take on too much too soon, and the demon rank, which goes up with your kills. It's set up in such a way that even if you die and fail to complete your military objective, you've always made a little progress towards the next demon rank. Now I can finally see what all the fuss about Achievement points is.

Hey, I would just say that I love the game, however I think that the first few levels are MUCH harder then the levels after them. The randomness is much harder to cope with in early levels then latter on due to the fact that you are very squishy and alot of it is down to what you find.
Get a combat shotgun RIGHT at the start of lvl 3? promptly folowed by blue armour on the same level? AWSOME!
Not find green armour in the first 3 levels, have the former humans take and use all of your medpacks on level 1 and then run into a Demon on level 3? sucks to be you.
(I have had both of those situations happen to me).
If ind that if I can get to the 4th lvl I am set and can usualy get to atleast lvl 13 or so. Also once you get near lvl 10 it stops being "wth can I find" and turns into "ok, What should I keep?", and that is more skill then luck <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

The Wall is not that bad. The Unholy Citadel is where the suck is at (impossible, tbh <img src="http://koti.mbnet.fi/retales/lol.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />). Or the spider lair thingy... Agh, my inventory is full all the time, and it seems I don't even have ammo in there! In the first game where I got pretty far, I tried to hog all the weapon mods I found, but quite soon I noticed that's not a good idea. Advanced rocket launcher is the only 'advanced' weapon I've found so far. Should I try to hold on to at least a few modifications while waiting for a moddable weapon, or should I just trust I'll find the mods after I get a gun?
Also, I'm very dissapointed that the double-barreled shotgun doesn't have the sound from Doom 2 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":angry:" border="0" alt="mad-fix.gif" />

'Advanced' weapons are way too rare for carting mods around to be worth it. Those spaces in your inventory would be far better used by plasma cells or large medpacks. Mods are pretty common, too, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding what you want if you should happen upon another advanced weapon.

In the earlier version, I had no problem getting AT LEAST past the Cahined Court, and now...Man. This time Hell's Arena is actually tough. It used to be SO easy, because all I had to do was stand in the middle of hte arena, wait for something to appear in my vision, and blast it with my shotgun. F, F, R, F, F, R, F, F, R, and then if by that time a cacodemon was next to me I'd just move one space away and fire at point blank range.

Good freaking luck, melee is HARD. I mean like, absurd. One one hand, if you start with Brute, people die quicker, but so do you when you get plugged full of lead. On the othere hand, starting with Hellrunner will make you last longer while in coward mode, but now it takes forever to kill anyone!
Anyways, I just got finished with the most amazing Angel of Marksmanship run. Firing at 140% speed is SO awesome. I once killed a hell knight before he even got one shot off! And, as luck would have it, in level 11 I happen across a thermonuclear bomb! So when I entered level 12 and I was surrounded by 3 cacodemons right off the bat and out of medkits? I got to go out with a HUGE bang! It was awesome. So very, very awesome. I love AoM.
Also, it wasn't until AFTER all that, that I figured out you reload both guns with R as opposed to r. =P

on the note of luck.
I started lvl 2 in a 5X6 room with 4 former humans IN IT (no, none of them were in spread range of the shotgun), by the time I finished them off I had an imp join the party and 2 former sergeants.
I ended with 90 hp, but that was with no med packs left. Oh, and only 1 small health globe on the level (map showed me this shortly there after).
admittedly I managed to get up to level 11 where they through something like 6 or 7 Cacodeamons at me in an open room....

I am startign to get convinced that the game gets easier the longer you have played in on a computer.
I have installed the game on 3 different computers so far. Each of them the first 10 or so times I went through I had horrible luck (lack of armour, combat shotguns, etc etc). However once I have played 20+ gameso n a computer I start getting better and better luck with more frequency....

Ahem, if you had read my post more carefully, you would notice that I didn't nuke myself. In fact, I didn't even die, I beat the game. But my mortem says I "Nuked myself" and the player screen doesn't acknowledge the fact that I won. Not even a partial win, which is what I assume happens when you <i>actually</i> nuke yourself on the cyberdemon level.
The problem is that when I pulled that little 'trick' on level 21, the game become confused and convinced itself that I had died on that level. The guy who went on to kill the cyberdemon must have been my ghost or something.

'twas a fun run, I think I'm going to go for a melee run (not the berserker challenge though) and see if I can't get to/through the Cathedral.
Was anyone else completely blown away the first time they discovered the first level isn't always the same?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I wouldn't exactly say I was blown away, but I was definitely surprised, and very happy, since some of the variations are guaranteed to give you all 4 medpacks.

And that one variation guarantees that the zombies get the medpacks first <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
It's just my luck. I played as the Angel of Marksmanship, and "surprisingly" there was a combat shotgun on the 2nd level, only a few spaces from the start. Argh <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Level 4 on my first game today.
Take the stairs down to level4. And it looks like this

<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
Yeah, had to commit suicide.
Then the next game, got to level 2... Entire level is FILLED with Acid. Acid and barrels. No walls. Guh.
i cant make it past lvl 3
cshank, are you sure you couldn't escape by moving diagonally? I was once very puzzled about levels like that, until I realised the PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End could move my little @ diagonally.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That is ingenious.
I have installed the game on 3 different computers so far. Each of them the first 10 or so times I went through I had horrible luck (lack of armour, combat shotguns, etc etc). However once I have played 20+ gameso n a computer I start getting better and better luck with more frequency....

I killed the cyberdemon, but then the game bugged out and stole my victory! DEE COLON.
I planted the nuke 1 sq away from the globe, stped over, grabed the globe and thne just waited for it to nuke the level.
It worked for me...
