Interesting read. I wonder if someone can find audio from the presentation since it would be interesting to hear what was said.

Good read, but in your notes you mention:

"Talk about Steam content server and PT plans?"

Did you talk about that at all? And nice new artwork in there!

Yeah we will end up showing off some more concept work soon, instead of burying it under 40+ slides! Cory "Squeal Like a Pig" Strader did that one. Nope, no NS2 gameplay footage in there. We wanted to show some but we weren't quite ready.

As far as PT plans, nope not ready to discuss that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I'm not sure if they will let me post the audio but I will do so if I can. There's a lot more going on in the audio than in the slides for sure.

must admit dynamic infestation is fun,
i've been playing with conceptart myself.
    i'll get a new tablet soon.that should boost my apetite for playing with the idea myself <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Neat looking presentation, but like all good Powerpoints it's mostly just the bare bones upon which the musculature of your speech was built. I guess the skin would be like, your own skin. Maybe the skin of everyone who bought Zen of Sudoku. A skin suit.

Great presentation, it was an interesting read. I am sure Unknown worlds will get a great profit on NS2, now that you've learned from your mistakes you can bring this game into the public eye once more. Maybe even rival counter strike community wise? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

    2 questions on the slideshow:
What went wrong with the sudoku theme?
    Since when has Zen been retail? Maybe we'll start seeing more reviews <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Also i see new concept art in the powerpoint. Nice. At least i think it's new.
Nice presentation as far as I can tell. I wish i was there

I think it's really cool you've taken on a doctrine of "sticking it to the man." Over the last few years, I've really started getting interested in guerilla development and distributed design teams, racking my brain for answers to how these methods can be the most productive. Small teams and many projects are what I really want to do with my life, keeping everything a labor of love. It's just good to see that there are others out there with the same general mindset.

[edit]There's actually a big difference between gorilla and guerilla. However, the mental image of "gorilla development" is pretty funny.[/edit]

Very nice <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> Love the new concept art. Zen in Retail would make a fortune from the old fogies. Apparently they buy just as many 'casual' computer games as the kids of today (mainly because they have money to spend).

When this current generation, generation y and beyond, gets to the point of old age - computer games should really take off.

    Hey Charlie,

This is Brian Hughes, I was the volunteer in the radiation green shirt (sorry if you got permanent vision damage when talking and looking at me), you guys meet before the Magic the Gathering session. Unfortunately I didn't get to go to your talk because I had the joy of working at another boring session... Oh well.

Anyways, if you wanna show off NS2 gameplay videos secretly for us in this thread, feel free! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Man I'm just itchin for some videos...

I hope it's all right to post this. If not, take it down.

This is a (reduced size) capture of the image used in the power point that everyone is mentioning.

I'm fairly certain that CMP (big wigs behind GDC) will say no...

After all, there is a reason why they created GDC Radio.

You can download his lecture here for 8 bucks: <a href="http://store.cmpgame.com/product.php?id=1969" target="_blank">http://store.cmpgame.com/product.php?id=1969</a>

*Edit* Charlie, if you want to download your own lecture for whatever reason, contact me and I can hook you up for free <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Extra hot sauce on that side of hot, served ala flambe with a side of diced hawt.

That's what game artwork is meant to look like.

We just need more stuff to wet our appetites!
  • RobRob Unknown Enemy Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 25Members, NS1 Playtester
Don't get me wrong, this stuff is great. I've just always wondered what it would be like if a dev team held back everything until they went gold, pulled a limited blitzkrieg, and then BAM. You get the final product with hardly any idea what sort of awesomeness is inside.

I suppose you'd be sued for heart attacks and such...

It's just that so often, it seems that advertising is meant to sell as many first edition copies as possible with no regard for longevity, when history has shown us <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hush_Puppies" target="_blank">time</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Women" target="_blank">time again</a> (yes, this is Little Women, no I have not read it) that it's word of mouth epidemics that really turn a product into an epic classic.

For instance, I was never even considering an X-Box 360 until I heard over and over again how great Gears of War was. I played it once, then I bought the X-Box. None of the ads for it swayed me.

But by the time you start the media blitz, who could see if the public _hates_ it?

If you release PR stuff far enough in advance, then you still have time to make changes and listen to how people are reacting...
