    Open up the box and look for a manufacturer for the mobo, look for the wattage on the power supply. The mobo should also have a model number. Put that in on the manufacturer's site and you've discovered what board you have.

    Or you could just get a nifty little program like Everest that shows you all that stuff automatically. I prefer digging around in my hardware though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Edit: Also, the PSU if you don't know is the box in the top left corner of the case, where all the power cables come from and where the computer plugs in. The motherboard is naturally the gigantic board in which every card and device connects to. Just in case.

    I've recently realized that my computer is actually pretty crappy...

    Motherboard: VIA KM266-8235 (really a POS, but it's a Compaq and that's what they gave me years ago)
    Video:ATi 256MB RADEON X700 PRO AGP 8x (...which only gets to run at 4x because Compaq shafted me)
    Sound: Realtek AC97 Audio
    RAM: 768MB DDR running at 133 Mhz (actually a PC2100 and a PC3200, since I couldn't find anymore crappy 2100 lying around anymore)
    Harddrive 1: 80GB (...probably a Compaq POS)
    Harddrive 2: 145GB (Maxtor that I bought for $10, but works surprisingly well)...
    Media Drive: 8x DVD-ROM (...woot for not being able to record CDs/DVDs...which my laptop does)
    PSU: 450W (...gives off fancy blue light...didn't know it did when I bought it, and I don't really care <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )



    It's only a shadow of its former self when I bought it from HP/Compaq 3.5 years ago. Unfortunately, except in the RAM and graphics card department, my laptop surpasses it in every way (and would surpass it in every way had I not upgraded). Now I've got an awesome processor bottleneck, since I'm afraid of switching out motherboards and breaking everything (let us pronounce this new fear "Motherboardmetathesiophobia").

    2) Start->Run->Type in "Dxdiag" and hit enter

    Hmm... my computer, after many years of continuous bugs and kinks and trials, is finally kaput, sofar as I can tell. Looks like I'll need to save up money and buy everything new, minus network card, mouse, keyboard and monitor.

    Anybody feel like helping me design a new computer that will be a beast for computer games, but lightish on the pocket? Seeing as I have about $AUD 200 now and a lowpaying job.. I'm looking at getting a loan from my parents and getting a better job in a fortnight.

    I've heard good things about intel core duo or whatever, but that's as up to date as I get concerning computers.

    Like I said, any help for the forums' most loathed poster would be much appreciated <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    My mate suggested this for a $AUD1200 budget:

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6400: $320
    Asus P5B: $175
    RAM 1GB DDR2 533: $130 (apparently 667 RAM doesn't give so much of a
    performance increase, and in some cases a decrease)
    GF 8800GTS 320MB: $450
    550W PSU (not completely generic) $90

    But I could go up to $1500 if the extra money boosted my performance [in games] significantly.

    An 8800 is a ridiculous choice. Buy a 7600GS or a 7800GS and then when DirectX10 is common, get a DX10 card. You can spend the extra money on a E6600 or another gig of RAM.

    The E6400 overclocks very easily, it would be a waste to get 533 specced RAM. Rather aim for 800, if at all possible. The price differences should not be signifigant. 1GB is also pushing it, getting 2x1GB instead to run in dual channel from the start is what I suggest.

    I would also advice to spend the extra on a P5B Deluxe, instead of the vanilla version, for better stock chipset cooling among other things. There's one thing though which propably concerns the whole P5B lineup - the onboard sound. It's been said to have issues with several games and otherwise. I noticed someone over Asus' forums complaining that the CPU load exceeded 20% when using it...

    PSU - for reasonably quiet and reliable products, see Antec NeoHE (manufactured by Seasonic I understand, other Antec PSU's have a... lesser reputation), Seasonic (obviously), Fortron or Nexus (rebranded Fortron). There are others, but I've had both Fortron/Nexus and Seasonic PSU's for some time, and they've served without fail.

    Why is an 8800 a ridiculous choice? I want this upgrade to last me a while, I don't want to keep upgrading things piecemeal. From the hardware reviews I'm reading now the 8800 GTS seems solid enough for DX10 work, fast enough to run everything out now decently well, and cheap enough to justify buying it. But then again, I'm only 1/3 of the way through the review...

    Thanks for the tips Luukas. Soundcards aren't very expensive so I'll grab a cheap one and chuck it in. I'll probably need to grab some really cheap headphones too, since my current speakers are all but dead... or may potentially just be dead [or maybe it's just my soundcard].

    I've had 2 WDs fail on me in quick succession, so now I go for Seagate, although I don't have much experience with Maxtor at all. And an 8800 is a bad choice because it's exceedingly expensive when you think about the DX10 performance you're going to get vs. when the DX10 cards from ATi start coming out and the two manufacturers get in to a price war and drive costs down.

    So far as hard drives go, the seagate barracuda is all I'd recommend. But be careful, there was a huge problem with the new drives that have perpendicular recording. More than half of those drives die within months. Go for a drive without it.
