Don't use one at all. Speed type frenzy for me

I just use the cruddy mic that came with my computer. I tape it to the top of my desk lamp, and then use the adjustable arm of the lamp to position the mic near my mouth. Improvisation is fun.

My voice sounds like a retarded 12 year old huffing helium, so I just type.

(I'm 15, by the way)

don't need one can type fast enough to get my message across. i find it frustating to have a commander who exclusively uses voice comms when I can't understand what he's saying. I keep asking for them to type it for me but no luck..

I use a pretty expensive headset, no huss, no fuss. Also provoides me with better sound location (exapmple i can tell where a marine is by hearing the footsteps) I usualy dont get alot of complaints about my voice so I assume for the most part they can figure out what im saying

I love the Plantronics Headsets. They have great quality mic and good headphones. Plantronics Headsets

I use the mic that came with my soundcard, and to keep out the feedback I wear my $100 headphones when I play.

I use a headset, but I don't use the mic attached with it, but the headset helps for hearing where the enemy is.

Any headset works fine, don't even have to nuke the 4.1 or 5.1 setup you have, just slip the set around your neck, and put the microphone next to your mouth. Mic quality doesn't even matter because the way HL does the voice nullifies any quality your mic could of provided.

I have a headset, and my audio driver has an option that I just love, called "headphones rear". It makes the rear channel play in my headphones and the rest over my speakers. Its very good for directional sound. I'm 22 and my voice probably sounds pretty bad, but I've foiund that not caring is a good answer to that "problem".

I have an el cheapo mic that sits on the desk. The quality doesn't matter, since HL turns it half into static anyway.

I used to be embarassed to use it, because I'm 14, but no one really cares, except jerks.

And the best thing is that you can sing!

I currently use a cheapo circa 1995 mic that makes me sounds like a skulk chuckling over a 11khz audi feed. I would get a headset, but I already have $150 sony headphones . I will probably buy a new mic.

Plantronics and Labtec make really good mics - I have a Labtec Axis 505 headset, and it works pretty well.

I was just in a game where the commander had his volume up REALLY loud - I could hear what I was saying through his mic when he talked. And after coming through 2 mics, it still sounded clear.

For anyone who lives in Australia, Tandy sells a suprisingly good quality headset/mic for about $20-30, i think it's a panasonic - its a white frame with black pads, has a volume and channel control on the cable. Its really comfy and the pads keep out 95% of outside noise. The sound quality is excepional for the price, of course it's not as good as the $500 Koss ones i used for audio engineering, but hey they price we pay for being povo.
The mic is reasonable quality, but like everyone seems to be commenting the audio compression used in voice-over-ip programs including halflife's internal system makes everyone sound like a 15yo with a cold. Except all those younger gamers, whom I can't help but giggle at when playing hardcore Day of Defeat games and hearing "watch out there's a sniper up in the window' in the high piping voice of the under-13s
One of these day I'll figure out how to jigger my sound card's audio pipe to modulate the mic input, and make my ingame voice sound like Lord Deimos from that awesome arcade/N64 game "Mace: The Dark Age".

Oh yeah - and i find it's easier to get important information to the team via the typed chat rather than voice comms, people tend to ignore voice sometimes especially when its being spammed by someone 'in the know' on the server.
