Another voice function!

Well, I've always liked the voice function best in NS, so I'd like to suggest another voice function - Double the voice, yay! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

So: How about a second, more limited voice key:
If you're a marine, only marines close to you and people in your team will hear you.
If you're a kharaa, only kharaa close to you or looking in your direction with hivesight will hear you.
If you're a commander, only the currently selected squad will hear you. (I found the alt+1 to 5 a little awkward)

Hope to promote a little more co-ordination. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Do you mean to not use the current NS voice function, and instead limit voice fuction to role specifics? Well, I really don't see much point, because the Kharaa have Hivemind, therefore they should be able to communicate with each other. The Marines have radios or something, so they should too. The way I see this working is if the Marines only had voice comms with their own squads, and the Commander could talk to the squads (or everyone). This would promote the use of squads, but it still doesn't make much sense and disadvantages the Marines a bit...

This is in fact good idea. Thanks to that, you could talk with a marine you're going in pair with, without forcing all other players to hear your talk.

I had no idea that this was a problem.

As far as I can tell, this would actually dissuade cooperation and promote ramboism, since you can't really hear what is going on the other side of the map, so you don't bother to turn around to defend that PG/RT/Hive/whatever.

Plus it sounds frustrating, isn't very realistic, and doesn't sound all that interesting. Thumbs down from me.

EDIT: would this apply to text as well?

Nope, two voice buttions, two voice functions.

The reason I'm suggesting this is that I'm always like "Skulks! Behind us!" or "You build, I'll cover" as a marine, or "Watch it, skulk around that corner!" as a commander. I would suppose the people not adressed get a little confused and/or sick of it eventually. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I really like this idea. I know of one (console) game that implements <b>something like this</b>, and that is Halo2. You can choose to simply talk into your mic and players will hear you automaticaly in a given radii, or you can push the "talk" button and have everyone hear you on your team.

    eh they are similar

Battlefield 2 does something kinda like this:

--Most players can talk only within their squads
--Squadleaders can talk to their squads with 1 button or to the Commander with another
--Commanders can talk to individual squadleaders with 1 button or all squadleaders with another

And its SOOO annoying. Your world is cut down to only a handful of people, and if you don't get lucky with those handful of people, then you just dont GET communication. I understand that it is somewhat necessary with 60-man teams, since hearing 59 peoples voice coms at once would be overwhelming. But your situational awareness of anything not happening in your own squad is extremely limited.

As far as I know NS2 isn't increasing the teamsizes, so by all means keep voicecoms open to the entire team. Theres no valid reason to restrict voicecoms when your team only has 8 people on it to begin with. Everyone should be able to hear you at all times (unless they muted you, I suppose).

Not everyone plays on 16 player servers. Not to mention competitive games are geared towards 12, and I've seen pubs with 32. You've been spoiled by TG <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

That said, there is a lot of radio chatter that could be dealt with on a server that uses the com quite often. Who knows, maybe NS2 will have more support for the creation of squads.

He's suggesting that there be TWO voice modes. Not one, but <b>two</b>. Non-global voice <b>and</b> global voice, <b>not</b> non-global voice instead of global voice.

This way if you want to say to everyone, "The hive's under attack", you can, but if you only want to tell the guys you're with, "Skulk incoming", you can do that, too.

Or if you're comm you can tell everyone, "Go through the phase", and then voice to one squad, "Except you", etc.

    Sounds like a good idea.

i like it, but not the commander part. I'm usually a commander, and I use the "squads" to armory, proto lab, armslab, obs, etc etc, so i can get upgrades faster, i dont have to click on the minimap and select the structure, it is much more faster.

I like the idea of a local voice mode, but please please please don't make it another button. There are already enough buttons.

If such a feature would be implemented, i'd suggest making it a combination of one button. I.E. Click to use global voice, click-clickhold to use local voice.

I like that idea, for the global voice have them use the radios and for the local just have the marine talk.

    Sorted.
