More official maps?

<div class="IPBDescription">why not ?</div>
I feel a lot (on my side of the world = Europe) that NS players play the same maps over and over. Some other maps are somehow deprecated (by vote).

I understand that players prefer the 'balanced map' or the maps they know like the back of their hand. But hey! I remember a time when NS was interesting because of new and unknown maps (and yet balanced too) and enjoyable for new comers (even if you don't know the map you can manage to get where you want). Maybee if we had some more official maps, it would change a little bit.

It would (maybee) give a boost to the actual community who is living on the old (must admit) maps.

    -Not out
    -Not validate by consties.
-Consties may not be the best testers from what i've heard (10Yrs old insulting anybody who kill him etc...).
-Altair IMO will never be worth the time they spend to "re-work" it.

I just say more new maps and new thing in maps.

    Maps with design that provide:
    * Easy to learn map (new comer like it). Some maps still are a bit tricky for them.
    * Real alien friendly hive (not a supermarket parking). some map do; some don't. Eclispse/cc , nothing/viaduc should be darker for example. More imersion somehow.
    * More alien ambush possibilities around hive.
    * Marins friendly 'MS'...

A little refit of some maps could help too.

Only 3 maps won't save it. I hope not but i'm realistic most of the time.

Someone has to make those maps.

I don't think introducing a lot of new maps will make anyone want to use a more varied selection - just fix the ones we already have. And even if they're all made equal, people will still prefer a select few, no doubt those they have good memories of.

I notice it all the time how I seemingly never fight in varied environments. I'm talking about a repeating mapcycle consisting of 3 or 4 maps.

    That's hardly sufficient. I'm looking forward to the new maps <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Why doesn't Unknown Worlds release a mappack every so often for NS with some new maps? Forgotten Hope managed it successfully.

Its worth pointing out that good NS maps are damn hard to make. The development cycle for a ns_ map is something like 6 months to a year.

So wait... you're saying that because people are phobic of playing any map other than the core few (Veil, Eclipse, Tanith) we should add MORE maps?

    ...

Why? So people have more maps to ignore? Why add more maps when it's the players that are broken?

Why not make the best of what you've got?

Because part of what's meant to be fun about NS is the maps. If you're playing the same ones over and over and over then you're never experiencing anything <i>new</i> and will just whine until the next update comes out (well maybe not). I'll concede that the problem is not only the players but that new maps take effort to learn, and some of them are very difficult to learn.

Incidently, 4 new maps will be in 3.2, not 3.

NS has the greatest maps I have ever played. They are complex, detailed and so full of different paths but yet, manage to reach a balance. Just by looking at the maps, you can tell its not mean feat just creating maps. So be patient. Anyway, the problem i think is not new maps but rather getting players to be more open to more maps. I mean, NS already has quite a number. It's just that people are not willing to play others besides the typical few.

New maps seem to be thrown to the wayside, though.

Anything introduced after 2.0 seems to be played sparingly. Testament to the awesome map design of NS, or the stubbornness of the community?

hmmm perhaps im alone on this... but i REALLY liked ns_agora. It was the biggest map in ns (perhaps y they removed it) but i thought it was rather balanced. the epic scale of the map lead to epic scale battles, which i sorely miss. Alas they a far and few between now. Perhaps they will reintroduce later.. but i doubt it. Nancy and bast were reimplemented, but i gotta say they are better than agora.

neway i thought agora was good, far better than eon or shiva thats for sure. But even these maps arnt THAT bad, and it wouldnt be awful to see them more played, but well people play what they prefer so i guess thats fair enough. Some people should have a more open mind though... often unbalanced maps lead to more entertaining games in pubs lol... just think of bast...

The map in my sig has been in progress since Sept. 19th, 2004. (Though, I map slower than most and I've taken breaks over the summer, etc.)

I feel as if most servers play these classic maps: Eclipse, Tanith, Nancy and Bast. At least, those are the maps I see in rotation most often. (Not to say others do not get played, but these are the most common. - Just my opinion of course.)

If you want more custom maps then check out the Mapping Forum and support new maps that get released on these boards. Offer advice and critical analysis to us mappers so we can make better maps for you. And for goodness sake, if you operate any kind of NS Server, offer a time slot for new maps to get played, either in public beta tests or closed sessions.

    Cheers,
    ~ DarkATi

dust2 syndrome. How many maps are there? Yet every time, at the end of the round (or worse, when some random nubbin joins) it's always votemap ns_veil / origin / eclipse.

The fault lies with the people and the server ops with dull mapcycles, not the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

We were recently discussing the possibility of doing a community map pack after the public release of 3.2. I'm not sure how this map pack would be organised, how many maps it would contain or any other details, but we will discuss it when we get the current workload done.

Try mapping a whole Ns_ map yourself to a high standard and then comment on Altair?

Also sounds like you are just wanting maps which help your sort of game playing style, not maps that will have an overall community or game *benefit.

    *EDIT - Turns out I can't spell.

The problem is the votemap at the end of each room, if servers admins remove it, the maps like ayumi-altair-eon-hera-shiva will be more played and more known i think because a lot of the votes are always for veil, origin or tanith...

I'm a mapper too. But not on HL1. morrowind, oblivion; farcry; unreal etc... I know what is it to spend <b>'TIME'</b> on maps. All engine have their good things and bad things. I never said it was easy.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Also sounds like you are just wanting maps which help your sort of game playing style, not maps that will have an overall community or game *benefit.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I play NS since the first days. I played all styles :
-Any of the 3 chamber as first chamber on all maps and all version (Yes early SC on 1.xx!!!).
-Any alien class as offenssive or defenssive.
-Any... the same as marins. i think you get it.

I just say: Alien must have their territory. And maps should avoid a little bit the "too easy spawn kill problem". Some hive as first hive means death for alien. OK OK Aliens have to make sure the hive is safe (that's part of the game duuude!!!). But hey... viaduc... just viaduc... just a pain in the ###### if something goes wrong for alien.

Ns_agora for example was not the best
    -bad and ugly marin start
-maybee a little bit to big
-Too easy to siege some hives.
    <b>"BUT"</b>
-beautiful ambush position (spots) around hives.
    -Dark and alien stylized hives...

As far as i remember on this map. I never SP inside the hives. always waiting outside; less risky.

Another thing about maps. It's a little bit hard to explain but i try.
Hmmm ns_lost (one of the best IMO)!! From marins start you can go to Alpha on the left and to Equilibrium on the right. But there is another possibility. On the road to equilibrium you can turn to go to equilibrum or go to température control.

I realised (not recently) that a lot of people don't use this way most of the time. Dunno why; they just don't. Sometimes leading to bad things. We clearly see that people don't use the entire possibilities of maps. They should do moer often but they don't. Clan do it better but sometimes they do the same mistake.

For ns_lost it's a little alley. A useful one, indeed. In Altair there's too much rooms that are praticly never used by people. As a commander, you always see them traveling in the corner of the map. Rarely in the middle. They just don't need it, so... It's just that 1/3rd (maybee more) of the map is not used.

Altair always looked like (IMO) it was made for giant people. Big stairs, high cieling, huge barrels, any alley looks like a highway. everything seems "over scaled".

    @Shockwave
    admin should... agreed.

    @Solitario
yup. Maybee dev should evaluate some maps and include these maps in a mappack beside the official mappack. Some name like "candidate mappack". It may encourage mappers to continue mapping with some kind of official stamp on it and finish their work (making it better in the final version of course).

Don't miss the point. I just say 'push it forward, more maps can help'.

I don't even know how to reply to this.

A simple map is easy to balance while a large complex map is more difficult. Despite that, on your logic, we should play in exclusively square boxes with 3 of the corners being hives and one being marine start, and maybe a few brushes distributed in exactly the same spacing. This would facilitate balance.

If you want to make those kinds of maps it's fine, it'd be very easy to do. The challenge is in making a good map and seeing that it's balanced as well. Once you have dynamic gameplay, good art, and solid atmosphere, balance is trivial to attain.
