Try put some ice cream on them.

If there is swelling or pain when moving the thumbs; yet not when they are still, keep with the ice.

Is there any swelling? does it feel skeletal? When I have body pain I try to relax, lay low on caffeine and sugar (as they can tend to bother nerves and cause muscle tension) and take vitamins, calcium and glucosimine(sp?) are especially good.

Also, pay attention to the types of painkillers you use and how they work, Acetaminophen(tylenol) dulls pain at a nervous level by blocking the communication passageways, Ibuprofen(advil) decreases swelling, and the other thing to try is muscle relaxants, which do just that. If one thing doesn't work one of the others may, and they will also help you figure out what is wrong if that is the case. There's relatively little that can go seriously wrong in your thumbs, but if the pain persists for a long time or you really can't deal with it any more see a doctor, they will be able to do something about it faster then trying things at random will get anything done.

If all else fails, painkillers with codein frigging rule.

If you suspect the pains is due to gaming induced bone and tendon strain, then I would advise against using painkillers - listen to the signals your body is sending. You need to learn the proper excercises for relaxation and conditioning of your wrists and hands. Back around the time when I finished college I used to get really bad pains across the backs of my hands and thumbs, and the company doctor sorted me out with some good instructions. I took up juggling too and now, 10 years later I'm still a heavy user of computers but I rarely experience any pain or strain.

Once when I was somewhere around the age of 9 I recall playing on a gameboy at my cousins' place, all of a sudden my right thumb dislocated. I popped it back in and kept playing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

It's weird that it's both your thumbs. Sounds like console-itis to me. My advice would be to screw the consoles and use a PC. That way one hand will probably start hurting first, so you know it's time to lay it off.

Sounds like it's just the nerves themselves. If I were you, and keep in mind that I am NOT you, I would press down on something extremely hard with the painful area and keep up the pressure for as long as you can. Keep off the painkillers, and just tell your body to get over it.

What's with all the anti pain killer advice? I have alot of people in my extended family with body pain disorders and I can tell you with medical backing that it's far healthier to live with painkillers then it is to live with the psychological effects of constant body pain. Body pain in the form of aching and stinging is usually the result of one of three things, either your nervous system is overreacting to nothing, you've strained your muscular system, or there is something wrong with your skeletal system. If it's a nervous problem which is probably the most likely the best way to deal with it is to use pain killers. Pain causes the muscular system around the affected area to contract in response to the pain, which in response further aggravates the misbehaving nerves and causes more pain, it's a vicious cycle. If you relive the pain sometimes it can alleviate the recurring cause and after a while cause the pain to disappear entirely.

If you have body pain, or any constant pain for that matter, the worst thing you can do for it is ignore it and hope it goes away, try stretching, try different pain killers, increase your calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplements and for joint pain glucosamine, and if nothing works or you find yourself dependent on pain killers don't wait to long to see a doctor (I wouldn't ever take pain killers regularly for longer then 1 week, many are a risk for addiction, which is really bad for your liver). Ice and heat packs are the best treatment for muscular strain and tissue swelling, but they don't address the cause of nervous malfunction or skeletal deficiency.

I don't think anyone would dispute the benefits of painkillers for chronic pain, but I personally avoid taking painkillers for transient aches. If I have a headache, and I have time to, I relax. I don't know about your country Swift, but over here we have a definate problem with overprescription of potent medication for trivial disorders. I certainly wouldn't like to take painkillers to mask pain that might be treatable with a shift in behaviour. Treat the cause, not the symptom.

Because it turned my Mother(Fibromyalgia) into a zombie. Thats why painkillers suck. They all do the same thing at a point: Numb. And with the current medical science's oh-so-limited knowledge of the human brain, numbing anything up there is a bad idea.

Pain killers, prescription or not, are not the proper method normally. Holistic healing is much better for you.
