The good old team over at Sony working on the PS3 is looking in to the possibility of using Linux or OS X Tiger as the system's main operating system. All of the Mac fans out there are secretly hoping that Apple licenses OS X for the PS3, but that's wishful thinking. I Personally think that this could bring loads of new possibilities. The PS3 is already slated to be an uber-system with top-notch powerhouse components. Running a Linux which is notorious for using little system resources could make the PS3 a very awesome computer. Think about it. The cell processor is already damn powerful as it is, combine that with a bleeding-edge video card and with a Linux PC conversion, you could have yourself one powerful PC.

But wouldn't it support a only a very low resolution, since its meant to output to tvs?

Possibly, but it's established that its going to be high-def so would it matter?

It already works on linux. IBM team submitted a linux kernel patch for the SPU features, but the core is PPC so there isn't much difference, the main problem would be DRIVERS DRIVERS DRIVERS specificly Nvidia ones. IE 3D

So the best thing that can happen will be Apple wanting to run their operating system on it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

the psu has a hdmi connector, so I could connect that to a dvi monitor and it'll all be good. Remember all that advertising about 1080p?

PS3 supports up to 1080p, which AFAIK is like 3840x1080 :D

720p is 1280x720 and 1080i is 1920x1080 (interlaced). Pretty high res if you ask me.

Lets not forget to mention the natural 16:9 instead of your standard 4:3, but then again I'm sure that would be changable just in case you don't have a HD/Widescreen TV to run it on.

If they go with one, it will be linux, why? Because you can re-compile the damn thing from the kernal up however you want, and its FREE. OSX? A bastard stepchild of Unix and windows.

Urm, thing is, we don't really know how powerful it is. And we won't until the console is on the table in front of us.

Not to mention the fact the PS3 will be uber expensive.....
