You might have something there, BaconTheory. We're a pretty qualified group to run such a thing.

Hell, why don't we just make our own damn show, then try and sell it to G4? The could use some actual gamers...

Who wouldn't? Some of the greatest minds in gaming history creating a blog or TV show? Trivial, really <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It can be like MySpace, but less retarded! And its an online community for gamers only, rather than an online community where you can join a group dedicated to gaming.
  • BaconTheoryBaconTheory Join Date: 2003-09-06 Member: 20615Members
Well you can already create a weblog with multiple users if you've got the bandwith and the right software. It would kind of be like the forums but instead of all the knowledge going on a forum, it goes in a weblog. We could have the current mods mod the weblog like they do now to filter out any pointless/obscene/violating stuff.

    Oh and making it less retarded than MySpace isn't exactly hard... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

What if we made a sort of combination Weblog and Wiki? Not only could you have individual user profiles, but it would also be easy to set up things like text-based games and a general knowledge database. You could even make articles about various inside jokes and such.

You know, in all eriousness, I think this has some real potential. Honestly, I'd be willing to help out and do my part as I'm sure others would be.

Ok I am confused. How is that not different from like regular gaming website that has its own forum?

Because regular gaming websites don't give you in-depth user profiles and the possiblity to set up blogs?

Edit: And the very nature of a wiki means that anyone can edit it, so theres a major difference right there.

Indeed. A blog/wiki combo is not on very many gaming websites from what I've seen. Basically, this is one plethora of knowledge in one spot with easy access. The blog is for tech and gaming news and such, and the wiki is for tech how-to and inside jokes and such.

What surprises me is that no one has actually discussed this before. I mean, this idea makes total and complete sense and it would be the total ownage. I just said something because it sounded cool and logical.

Well, lets find some hosting, and someone who knows how to set this up. All of which could probably be found on this forum.

    We need:
    Hosting
    Someone to program the thing
A webdesigner to make it look decent.

The wiki part is already partially taken care of, since I think Wikipedia gives away its source code.

Youve got a point about the wiki thing.

But how is Off-Topic any different from a multi-person blog? The format is exactly the same. The much hyped "blog" is really a forum where only one person can start topics.

Hmm webhosting, that could get tricky unless someone just wants to pay for it outright. I know for a fact that we have some talented webdesigners and coders lurking around the forums, I'll put something up in the artwork forum to see if anyone is interested in designing the thing.

Interesting point. But people do like to have a place of their own, that they control, where their word is law, even if its only on the internet. Its a psychological thing.

And its probably not to hard to implement, so, why not?
  • BaconTheoryBaconTheory Join Date: 2003-09-06 Member: 20615Members
True. It would be in the format of a more user-friendly UI, which is always a plus. And it would help so that there's not 50 tech news threads in Off-Topic. The Wiki part is an excellent idea as well. We wouldn't have to deal with the forums' atrocious (no offense) search system to try and find old tech help and inside joke threads. They would be easily accessible like a dictionary.

Should we, you know, make a new thread for this?

Exactly. THe whole point of Wikipedia is to be community-editable and easily accessible. The information should be fairly, if not totally, accurate.

"Requesting Help to Create a Wiki/Weblog By and For Gamers"

    Or something like that.
