Windows Xp And 3.5" Floppies

coriscoris Join Date: 2003-07-08 Member: 18034Members, Constellation

I havent got one.
Well, windows xp insists that i have a 3.5" floppy. Well, I dont. Even if I remove it manually from the hardware manager, or whatever it's called in english, the floppy will be "back" next time i reboot. This annoys me because it makes My Computer open up several seconds slower because it's searching for a non-existing floppy. Has anyone got a clue how I can remove the "ghost floppy" permanently?

You could try through the BIOS there must be a setting in there that acompanies your needs.

yeah... you go into the bios and you have the boot menu.

just set it to your primary CD, then your hard disk

Although I'm not one to judge, you're an idiot for not having a 3.5"

They cost about £3 these days.

    Agreed coris.
    Floppydisks are only history.

I've got one in my computer, but only for the purpose of not leaving a big hole in the side of my case. It isn't physically connected to the motherboard or PSU in any way, i've just never needed it. USB pen-drives for the win!

And yes, there will be something in your BIOS to stop your puter searching for a non-existant floppy drive, although I forget what it's called. For my particular BIOS its under "Advanced BIOS features" and its called something like "floppy drive auto-search" or something.

I haven't used a floppy disk in my computer/s in years.
And yes coris, it's fixable by going into your bios.

not really. It's still useful for programs like hard drive tools if you don't want to burn a CD-RW... or instal xp on a sata drive

Or if you need to update your BIOS to another version. Isn't that only do-able with a floppy?
  • RobertoRoberto Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14591Members, Constellation
my bios updates itself without any floppy... now if I couldn't boot into windows and wanted to downgrade my bios, I would need a floppy.

I use floppies regularily for minor data transfers. A lot of people at my uni use last generation laptops, and I have found it safer to use the established method than to rely on USB sticks. Plus, my USB unit doesn't work.

Well, at least here in Canada, all new PC's and laptops since the start of 2005 don't even come with floppy drives (longer for laptops actually) so it's becoming really pointless to have them now.

My floppy drive is in there mainly for old school nastalgia. I've had that baby for years and years. The face plate is hanging on by duct tape.

Rewritable CD's and broadband internet really made floppies into a thing of the past.

For minor data transfers, email or instant messenger seem like better options than a floppy disk.

    Mmmm floppies.

You know, I have about a hundred of them stored in a floppy drawer. You wouldn't believe what I have in there. There's like...Matinee, Paperport, them old Microsoft Expert programs, and ye olde dodgy mouse drivers. Then of course, there's the random floppy which my brother hides his....stuff in it.

To boon, somebody in the house decided to have a sense of humor with the coloured ones and placed them in the back. The back now looks like someone had fun with tie dye.

Mmmmm what to do with these....

...I think that was actually accomplished by ZIP disks, since floppies are over 20 years old. I've got some games in a box somewhere that are floppies, one where you're a bird, really old mario bros. (no super )...maybe frogger or something.

I think you all mean ZIP drives...as I haven't even seen a floppy drive in a computer for 7 years (the one my mom bought in 1998 doesn't even have one). Although, inspecting my My Computer, it says it's a floppy drive...even though ZIP disks aren't floppy at all (well, the inside is ).

    ...Giant floppies for the win!
(despite having no working computer to run them)

I know 1 home user who actually bought a zip drive. ONE. Zip drives were a failure in the home. For small business / small server backup, that can be different. Although I've still run across more tape drives than zip drives in that case.

Go to Start> Control Panel> System> Hardware> Device Manager. Find your disk drive, right-click on it and click Disable. [EDIT:] Not Uninstall, Disable.

I still keep a floppy for school reasons. As much as we have USB and CD writers, most universitys and school computers still only have floppies as a removable storage medium.

Not to mention that in Comp Sci, my assignments requires me to hand in with a floppy disk.
