This is obviously a berserker tactic by valve to destroy EA from the inside out. EA thinks they're getting a deal, but no mortal software company can contain the beast that is valve. Sierra could not, Vivindi could not, and EA cannot.
Plus, if it's not, I'll be very sad, so it has to be. Gabe Newel wouldn't make us sad, would he? Right? Right.

-I didn't read through the entire thread.. so maybe someone has already said this.-
My first reaction to this news was pretty close to what seems to be what the majority of gamers are thinking right now. Something along the lines of "WTHOMGBBQH4X!11"
Now I'm just hoping Valve didn't do anything stupid, that its just a distribution deal and that valve hasn't buckled to certain EA policies. I would be very displeased to find that the Xbox version of HL2 has had all the graffiti and posters replaced with adverts for EA games, or that the sound track had been replaced with "EA Trax!!11" and thus would be a bunch of crappy songs seemingly pulled out of a box filled with crappy songs or that they had removed all blood and gore from the game. So long as those things don't happen and EA doesn't try to force Valve into doing 8billion HL2 expansion packs, I'm okay.

Someone needs to publish the games, and it might as well be EA. I can't see any problem with them publishing the game, especially as they definitely have enough resources to get the game out on time with a proper release.

Ignoring whether EA is evil or not (I'm not a fan of EA but I'm also too lazy to boycott them so whatever, they get money from me if they publish a decent game), the fact is many many people don't like them. Valve tends to know what it's fans think quite a bit (moreso than other developers anyway) so they've got to know that not many people are going to be happy about this... So why?
Probably because they know people will buy their games anyway. Stop yer whingin', you'll buy Half-Life 3 if it has an EA logo on the box. Hell, you'll buy Half-Life 3 if it kicked you in the balls every 5 seconds until you got home from the store
I hate EA because they believe that their work ethic is benefitial for the gaming community and because they killed Bullfrog.
Ubisoft are equally hated for using their titles as advertisement hoardings (eg Wrigley's Airwaves gum).
VALVe are treading a fine line but are safe as long as the partnership goes no further.

Just to add something. We're in an age where games don't just have to be purchased from the shops, if you see what I mean. There are plenty of ways to excercise your right to buy, or not to buy EA titles.

Besides, Valve games will not be altered in any way. They still have the huge bank balance to make sure they can make the games they want.
In fact. Let me mention one word. Maxis. In fact, how about two. Spore.
This'll be the same type of relation. Spore'll be published by EA as well.
