Just to clarify, Squaresoft developed Super Mario RPG. The game plays out much more like FFIII or Chrono Trigger than it does Paper Mario/The Thousand Year Door, which was developed by an internal Nintendo development studio called Intelligent Systems.

Soul Blazer/Terranigma are fun games.

I'm playing Tales of Phantasia right now, it's a good RPG.

Uhh...Star Ocean is another supposedly good RPG.

Obligatory Chrono Trigger mention.

Seiken Densetu 3 was fun as well.

Can't say I reccomend Secret of Mana, though.

Be sure to get Metal Warrior as well. It's hard to find though. I has a very difficult single player and some pretty good mulitplayer too.

If you've never played Super Metroid before... I pity you.

You can't say this one enough.

Secret of Mana, it laid the ground work for all of Squaresofts Action/RPG titles for years to come... (cough)Chronotrigger/secret of evermore(cough).

Chrono Trigger uses a turn (well, action-gauge) based combat system. Just about the only thing that can be described as a similiarity to SoM, which I love dearly, is that fights take place on the usual map.
I can not see why one would describe CT as action RPG.

[edit]Oh, and I second Super Metroid. I pity Retro, their Prime series has to live up to what is likely the most refined puzzle platformer in existence.[/edit]

Not to incur mod wrath, but how are you planning on obtaining these games?

Because if you're going through EBay, a copy of Secret of Mana in English is going to be easier to find than a copy of Seiken Sensetu 3 (Secret of Mana 2, I think)

If you plan on....you know...the internets....then I can suggest different things.

PM me for a good site with loads of somewhat obscure SNES reviews.

Edit: Crap, Nem is reading the thread as I post this, of course.

No worries, I'm willing to tolerate a bit of mild warez discussion if it's physically impossible for the copyright owner to make more money of the software. Try not to link to ROM sites, though.

OK, let me rephrase that: "Try not to refer to ROM sites, though."

Chrono Trigger is indeed the own. I've got it on my PSP, and have been playing it consistently for weeks, my 3rd time going through. The battle system is better than any of the Final Fantasies, and it requires more timing/strategy than any of them too. And the story is the best thing Square, or any other RPG maker, has ever written. Great extras too.

SoM = my all time fave

Terranigma
Kirby Superstar
Actraiser 1&2
Sim City

no matter what your tastes are you'll like at least ONE of those.

There's a gigantic list of good games for the SNES. Not like all this crap that's come out in recent years for these consoles. The ratio of good games to bad games on the SNES is amazing.

Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Donkey Kong Country
And of course: Zelda a Link to the past

UN Squadron
TMNT: Turtles In Time
Star Wars (There's one for each movie, 4 5 6)
Starfox
Castlevania
F-Zero
Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike
Lufia and the Rise of the Sinistrals
Top Gear
Rock & Roll Racing

Just to name some less famous ones, that are still awesome depending on whether they're your thing. Definately Lufia II though, it's a great RPG. Imagine some Final Fantasy gameplay, except there's no random battles. You'll see your enemies beforehand a'la Mystic Quest, and everyone knows random battles are lame.

Let me break out some...less mentioned games here:

Jurassic Park - my favorite game ever, JP on SNES (despite the fact I've never owned one...I wanted to play it whenever I went to my friends...back in the day). Dinosaur shooting action in 3rd overhead (outdoor) and 1st person (indoor). It works much, much better as a ROM (if you have a controller), because on SNES it has no save feature and it's not really a short game.

Kirby's Dream Course - Kirby + Golf = Decent Golf game (plus it's got power-ups and stuff...hooray!).

Smash TV - can be pretty fun, more of a play with your friends game.

I'll also have to throw a mandatory Super Mario Allstars w/ Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger (FF7 of the SNES, unless you don't like FF7...then it's like...BoF3 or some game you do like...). My friend is sort of obsessed with CT...I'm still saying it's Ayla like Kayla and not Ayla like 'eye'-la.

I'm wondering if anybody here would recommend ChronoCross for PSX? If that's good too I might need to find one of those at the new game exchange in the mall...

God damn right, best 2D Mario game by far.

DO NOT GET STARFOX. That game a a horrible piece of ****. Other than the frame rate being horrible from what I remember, it's also an eyesore with nothing good going for it.

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 are must-haves, but you won't be able to find Seiken Densetsu 3, and if you do you won't understand it unless you read Japanese.

Oh please. The SNES had as many lemons as the next console. It just happens to have a damn long list of games, period.

But if the percentage is the same as any other console, and the system has more games in general, that still means more good games right?

Sure, but that's not because "games were better those days", it's simply because we've forgotten about the SNES Populous, or the Mario edutainment titles by now.
