it's so hard to tell whether you're a good pilot, or how to improve... once on that map with the buncha islands, where each team has one bomber, I was 40/0 flying the F15, people were doing kickvotes left and right because they were so sick of getting blown up as soon as they entered a vehicle or jet...

next day, I'm flying the SU on the same map, and there's an F15 pilot who shoots me down every time I get off the ground... even when I get behind him he manages to circle around and get me, I try hard turns with afterburners, I try luring him close to mountains, I try cutting my engine so he'll pass me - nothing.

is the F15 just much better than the SU? is he just a much better pilot? was he just lucky? does a joystick improve your flying tenfold? I'm considering getting one, but I fly pretty well with the mouse, it's hard to see where a joystick would improve me...

I prefer the keyboard and mouse to the joystick, really... Once you're used to it, you can be much more precise.

    I doubt it.

This coming from a damned good pilot(not to toot my horn, but I am), I can honestly say, if you wanna do lots of flying(copter or plane), you need a joystick. Its that important. There are some tricks you can only perform with the Joystick(Until you see me flying a copter, you won't understand. I do some crrrrrrrrrrazy stuff), and its a ton easier to dodge AA fire with one(until you go against a experienced clan who is good with AA or other aircraft, you really won't know if you're good or not).

Not fixed, however you can fix it yourself both in the demo and the full version by going to My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\<profile number, usually 0001>\ and editing Controls.con in notepad.

It's pretty simple to figure out once you get past the unreasonably long command names they got. It's similar to Quake/HL's "bind x command" syntax.

Just search for keys with "Del", "Page", "Ins", "Home", "End", and etc. and delete the entire line for that binding, or just go ahead and change it to the keyname (you can probably figure it out on your own for most keys)

The reason why that bug is there in the first place is that there are a few commands left over from Battlefield Vietnam that are either still in that config (and just taking up dead space) or are actually still in the game and actually work, but just not in the menu for some reason (such as the 3D map, but I can't imagine why anyone would want it off, so that's probably why the public end to the bind was removed).

I couldn't seem to get that to work in the demo

And it seems a bit stupid that EA would leave that kind of bug in there, and not even acknowledge it's existence

I find it retarded that (last time I checked) there is only ONE ranked server in the UK. Two in Germany and one in France, but only one in the UK itself, and wouldn't ya know it, all of the European ones are constantly full! Who would have thought it...

    True.dat

I have given up on finding servers with free slots so I just randomly bash "Join Server" on the full ones and hope that I can get in that way. It generally takes me 25 minutes to get in one. And with the sluggish BF2 interface it's a pain ...

I'm going to have to jump in with CWAG's opinion that the shooting in this game is retarded. Maybe I've been spoiled by red orchestra's realism (yes, if you get shot in the head you are going to die) and the ability for infantry classes whose expertise is with a rifle allowing them to actually shoot straight, but yeah, shots in this game = all over the goddamned place.

I could bind keys like keypad ins, keypad end, keypad home and keypad left arrow.. all are used in my demo version. Ins is sprint, home is switch weapons, left arrow is talk on mic with squad and end is reload. Never seen this bug to be honost.

Just looking through the Official EA Game forums and the countless number of threads about the ingame menu and browser. LOL

Ever the EA DEVs are too scared to poke their heads in to have a look at their own forums.

    Link to the forums

    [edit]

Just browsing through the forums and came across this thread
About playing on ranked servers etc And an actual EA Dev was able to post on this server. You would think "oh my" what a nice person to take the time to post, to help his fellow members in their trouble in playing this amazing game. NO HE TREATS US LIKE MUSHROOMS (Kept in the dark and constanly fed ****).

Just look at what he posted

QUOTE

Please appreciate that right now the Battlefield 2 servers, ranked and unranked, are getting (almost literally) beaten up. With the game having only been out a couple of days, finite places available on ranked servers, a slighly clunky in-game server browser and an absence of the optimum Linux server code things are inevitably going to be a little bit wobbly for a little while.

It is, however, very possible to get a worthwhile game if you play at the right time of day. Consider that many gamers will be trying to get in plenty of time on a ranked server in order to start progressing on their unlocks, and that this is the first weekend the game has been out and it's naturally going to be hectic.

I played for 2 hours on Friday night (from home) on Multiplay #1 server with no lag or connection problems whatsoever. The secret? I started at 11:30pm.

Give it some time and things will calm down. Which, coupled with fixes for other issues which are interfering with a great online experience, will all help to make the game as enjoyable as I know you all want it to be.

My apologies in the meantime for any disruption to your game.

I think i would get banned for the amount of language i would use to describ this person. On a side note does he not think some of us have lives and that we cannot sit at precise moments of the day and wait for an opening, unless the crock of **** in game browser tells us different.

TBH GFG EA, get this **** patched.

    [2nd Edit]

LOL this is getting even better, im still trolling through the forums and came across another "EA what you playing at" type of thread, a member posted about that he could run the FULL game as well as the DEMO (Demo setting were high, he now has to run low settings for FULL game). However a DEV decided to drop in completely ingoring the whole thread and commenting some **** about how this persons computer is not working.

    what a flipping ****

I suggest trying the usual suspects -
    check and reinstall your drivers
    check and reinstall direct X
ensure you have no other programs running in the background
    and so on.

Should you still be having no luck, please try your local EA tech support team who should be able to get you up and running.

...what....they want us to play at a certain time of the day....thats just stupid, thats like saying play NS in 4am in the morning when no players are on so that no lag can be caused :/

I really am in question at how the person could only come up with 'The secret? I started at 11:30pm'...so you mean anytime before that the entireworld wide servers lag until then?

And they make it 10x worse with the flipping stupid comments by the admins on the forums. Either say something helpfull or go get yourself a nice warm cup of shut the **** up.

No, they're SUGGESTING that you play at a different time if you find it too hard to find a slot on a server, until they can get it sorted. Personally, I've always found a server within 5 minutes of opening BF2.

Calm down, buddy. It's just a game. You have to be quick to find a server to play on, click Refresh often. Don't hesitate to join an almost-full server.

There is no load time for the menus. o_O The only "load time" is the connecting to the account server to verify your account and retrieve your stats for the BFHQ. Don't be ridiculous.

No, they're SUGGESTING that you play at a different time if you find it too hard to find a slot on a server, until they can get it sorted. Personally, I've always found a server within 5 minutes of opening BF2.

What a crock of **** you just spouted there.

Sorry but you've basicly said what the EA admins are saying, which aint helpful ONE BIT. after you've been looking for a server for a good hour constant refreshing doesnt even HELP!

Ive just got from playing on a European 64 man server, at the start the team play was ace but the laggyness was really getting to me, as we changed maps the lag became un playable yet players still played because most of them knew ( i even asked them this) that they dont want to wait for a slot on another server.

I don't appreciate you treating me like I'm an idiot, I'm just trying to help by telling you what has been working for me so far.

Are the pings to American servers honestly very bad? I ping 110 to most UK servers, and I can always find a slot in NA servers.

Also, are you looking just for ranked servers, or ranked and unranked? If you just want to play, it's probably quite easy to find an unranked server.

US Ranked Servers (even ones in chicago which is the closest official server to me) ping between 110 and 300 for me. Unranked ones from the same location are usually about 60 below.

I'm getting the same problems as Spetsnaz here. I will sit there refreshing for ages, jumping at every '31/32 players' opportunity and being shot down every time as the server browsing is frankly too incompetent to deal with my needs sometime this side of the 21st century. Doesn't help that when I finally do get some ranked gaming in, most of my stats are lost. I keep the medals, but gain barely - if any - experience. I'm still a Private and I must have sunk in 10 hours of quality ranked playing.

Still, the actual game is so fantastic, I can let all of this go. Just that the first patch will be manna from heaven.

Well, the XP thing is just the MMO grind kicking in. They want you to waste all your time playing to get the next rank.

Actually, I got PFC in about 6 hours. I think it depends on how well you do. (Score-wise. It's best to have teamwork points, I think.)
