Did You Say Formatting?

<div class="IPBDescription">well I said HELP.</div> Here's the back story that you don't need to read but can if you want:

So one day I look at my desktop and think, wow, I have a lot of games that I don't play anymore. Why don't I delete some and free up some harddrive space? So I start deleting programs when one of the unistallers freezes. Then poof it unfreezes and all my programs are uninstalled. All except the ones that were running at the time. (winamp.. yay!). I didn't loose my files, just the programs. I wasn't too mad cause I needed to reformat anyway.

Here's the kicker:

When I go to reformat my computer, winXP cd in drive and the setup loads on my computer, the setup tells me every time I want to start the setup (reformat then reinstall) that it can't find a hard drive. It's in my device manager and its in my bios. What the hell is going on!?!

Help me ns forums, you're my only hope!

    whoa, sounds funked up.

the good news is that you didn't lose your files, i suggest IMMEDIATELY backing those up to CD/DVD/HDD and then just manually formating the using FDISK or some such thing. that's what i would do.
  • enf0rcerenf0rcer intrigued... Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14584Members
yea I've baked everything up. Did that all first, just incase.

    What's FDisk? - *googles*

and by manual do you mean taking the drive out and smashing it type thing?

Also before anyone suggests - I've taken the drive out and put it into another computer and it didn't register then either. Maybe I didn't set it up right but in either case it's still not working.

suprisingly microsoft's website has some helpful information here, basically the FDISK program will help you with formatting the drive from DOS. and <a href='http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q255867/' target='_blank'>This</a> is the link to the microsoft help thing, <a href='http://www.fdisk.com/home/' target='_blank'>This</a> might also be a good site for you.

Well that's your problem right there, you're not supposed to bake the drive prior to formatting.

damnit Gadzuko you nearly made me cough up a lung.

but I put it on at 450K like the package said.

.. err anyway. bake? How will that affect my hard drive? It's in the same condition as it was before I put it in the other computer. Nothing changed the problem is the same.

uh i dont know what you're talking about now enforcer, so i'm just gonna say your problem is that you're using windows' setup disk to format the drive. just do it the old fashioned (and better) way and use the FDISK guide i linked you. once you format it it should hopefully work like new, and if it doesn't well your bonked.

ok well I'll see what I can do. btw - that microsoft site says it's only applicable to basically anything but win xp. Nevertheless I'll look into it.

hmm, good point about the win xp thing, i dont have much experience formatting winxp drives, i do believe there is an equivelant *DISK program for it, lemme take a look around.

Yes, there is a format disk with the windows XP it allows you to format if you have the orginal windows XP home/Pro CD.
  • NeonSpyderNeonSpyder &quot;Das est NTLDR?&quot; Join Date: 2003-07-03 Member: 17913Members
Yes Cyndane, but have you noticed that he said that when he tries to format with the win xp cd it cant seem to find the drive? very odd in my opinion, and unfortunately my vast (not vast) well of knowledge has dried up on the matter.

Then his bios isn't set up to allow him to see a CD drive without drivers.

It finds the CD drive just fine. It can't find the hard drive.

Y'know, i get a sinking feeling everytime i open up "my computer" and it pops up with this little "searching for my computer" with the magnifying glass and everything.

everytime it does that i get this bad feeling like it actually wont find my computer and i'll have to start killing things. yeah, this is like that.

do you know if your hard drive is IDE or SATA? Sometimes windows setup has problems detecting SATA hard drives.

edit: not only are they awsome, they are the only types of drives <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
double edit: well you can go back 10+ years and find ISA ones if you really want

IDE and SATA are awesome drives, I like the new SATA ones though.

The default windows setup does not supply S-Ata drivers, but it should offer you to load them from a floppy during the setup.

Get the drivers, put them on a floppy and go ahead.

You can touch me if you want.

    <.<

btw you can get the drivers off the HDD manufacturer's homepage.

They alway seem incredible hard to find and get working right. SP2 supports them, so get a xp disk that has it. You can make your own pretty easily (and legally), <a href='http://www.google.com/search?q=slipstreaming&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official' target='_blank'>slipstreaming</a>

What ever happened to booting with a bootdisk98SE and then the folowing jazz:

    c: [enter]
dir [enter] (to check if it's the correct drive you which to format <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
    a: [enter]
    format c:/q/s [enter]

Only works of course if the file system isn't something other then FAT(32)

to get the bootdisk goto <a href='http://www.bootdisk.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.bootdisk.com/</a>

The problem is the S-ATA driver (or the lack thereof)...
  • enf0rcerenf0rcer intrigued... Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14584Members
yea it's SATA.. found out there's only 1 other computer that I could put it into in the whole house ha.

Oh and even if I did have drivers it doesn't give me the option of loading them at all. It goes like this:

Reboot comp with CD in drive.
    Windows XP setup menu appears.
I get the options to :
    -Continue installing XP
    - Repair XP
    -Something else.

To reformat and make partitions and all that jazz you normally go with the setup. So I go for that and it gives me the error right away saying that "setup cannot find a hard drive connected to this computer please ensure it is connected correctly blah blah blah...."

I'm not buying a new HD.. This one is fine otherwise (I'm using it now) and it's 250 gig. :\

so...... if I did get the drivers what would I do with them. Just install them and hope that more than just the bios recognises the HD?

I'll nose around a bit and see. I think it's western digital so I'll give it a go.

Thanks for the continued help. You guys are a great tool..errr...helpful people.

You should be shown "Press F6 to load S-ATA drivers from [something]" after the Windows CD has booted....

It might be small, but even I have seen it already.
  • enf0rcerenf0rcer intrigued... Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14584Members
yea I got that part already. I had the WD boot disk in drive and it still didn't work. It said it coudn't find some obscure file on the floppy.

    ugh..I'll keep trying.

    Killdisk! use it, love it.

I also want to know how people say they need help with their computer and the problem they state sounds like they cant get the thing working, but are able to post here?

    wth?

Some people have something called "multiple computers", others have "friends".

Both can be used for accessing the Internet.

I hope this doesn't shock you, but it is the truth.
  • enf0rcerenf0rcer intrigued... Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14584Members
there doesn't seem to be anythnig wrong with it. I can use the computer fine. Windows setup just doesn't find it I'm told because of the missing drivers for SATA hardware.

Anyway.. I'm going to work. I'll mess with it more later.
