What Would A Marine Apc Look Like?

MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members

To place in my marines' spawn.
I had a groovy idea for how to do my marines' spawn last night, involving the use of an APC (not driveable). However, I know the dev team want everything kept within the parameters of their universe so I was wondering how an APC ought to look. Given that a lot of the marines' equipment seems based on modern weapons I was thinking of basing the APC on say an M113 or M3 Bradley, as used by the US Army (but adding the NS futuristic twang to it, of course), but I don't know whether that would be okay.

Suggestions?

Hi Souris,

I would suggest a comparatively flat APC (in overall shape, not absolute dimensions), either tracked or wheeled, that would look like its designed for use on roads, not terrain. Since most areas of NS seem to be located in urbanised terrain.
How to?
When tracked, be sure to have the tracks have rubber surfaces, and always keep the ground clearance of the vehicle low, since it is not designed to move cross country, but to have high mobility on flat grounds. Bigger ground clearance will just increase framesize and volume of the vehicle, so keep it low.
It should have a large reardoor for fast mount/dismount, sloped armor is not really needed since designed to go versus Aliens, not anti armor threats, still it increases the looks, so maybe have a highly sloped front plate like 25°, and the top quarter of the sides 45°.
A turret, I would place it asymmetric on top of the hull, like front third of the vehicle, directly behind the frontal slope, and mounted to the left or right half of the vehicle when looking down from above.
Give it a twin or quad mount of rapidfire weapons, like autocannons, maybe a remote smallturret attached to fronthull as well, on the opposite side of where the main turret is.
So when Mturret is left, place the hullturret in front to the right front corner of the vehicle. Give it a single or twin MG mount.
You may give it a second, smaller door to the opposing side of the mainturret as well.

Some stuff like spikes, not too long, maybe half a meter (3 feet) to the frontal part (hey its going against beasts, not other vehicles ) may look neat too.

Ok just my thoughts on how I would design an APC for such a task

It can't be excessively complicated since it's going to be built with Hammer. The plan is to have the command console inside the APC too, so it's going to have to be big to let an onos in to attack the CC. I have a feeling that this idea might not work out at all, but I'm doing a few little tests nonetheless. Maybe if I get anything half-decent I'll put a screenie or two up.

Ah ok.

Have you seen Universal Soldier with Dolph Lundgren and Jean Claude Van Damme?
(Btw, stupid )

They had a truck that can build itself into a command station. Maybe make that APC not a combat vehicle, but a moving command post with no armament at all. In this case it would be more conveniant anyway, since why are all those fancy weapons not defending spawn?

New suggestion:
A long, wheeled flatbed vehicle, 4 wheels front, 4 wheels rear, in the middle a box that contains the commandpost. The box could look like it was deployed outwards, like the center box having twice the width of the original vehicle, and place some support pistons beneath them to the ground (like on a mobile crane).

Another idea would be to only build the back end of the thing and make it look as though it had been backed halfway in then opened up.

How about it looks like NOTHING? They hop on a dropship, it docks with the space station, they kill the aliens, then hop on the dropship. No APCs involved.

The APC in Aliens was sweet You could adapt that...... (I may be flamed for this, but I don't care!)

First off I was going to lightly flame you about not being at all helpful. Instead of that: Tell me, hotshot, what a NS dropship looks like.

Oh, and SamR - whenever anyone in IRC's started saying "Hey - why don't you base your map on [movie/book/tv show/whatever]" I've been quick to belittle them and deal out the slappage. This is NS, not Aliens.

For textures: Make the basic shape some kind of pitted, corroded metal, and make details like the wheels and engine shiny new machinery. Like it's an old battle-scarred craft bought secondhand by the TSA on a shoestring budget, then refurbished with just enough cutting-edge gear to get the job done. A lot of the Marine structures look like this.

If someone wouldn't mind making me an APC and a Cargoship for my map. When i say make i mean draw out a simple 2D picture of it from the side of it and from the front. Whatever your draw will be exactly how i will put it in Hammer. You will also be credited for making these somewhere in my map. And no I am not no noob at mapping.

would it be better if I made you an actualy worldcraft RMF (or hammer) and put it up? (i'd do a docking craft)

damn that is exactly the idea i had before reading this thread. damn you!

ah well i hadnt thought about having made it big enough for an onos so thanks for that

Lighten up, jeezus, is this what happens to people when they spend too long on these forums?

I didn't say anything about basing a map on any "movie/book/tv show/whatever," I just said that the APC was sweet, and he could adapt it, as in, it could be big, with four wheels.

I hope I don't become pretentious and feel that I can flame and belittle anyone for the smallest of things.

This is a forum, not a ........ bad........ place...... appropriate to what I just said......

A while back, before the mod was released, there were a few people making dropships. Can't remember who, I think one of them is in EC.

BadMofo made one, wherever he got off to.... I think SentrySteve may have some of the pictures lying around.

They have big round engines and quite small wings that I think fold up, like they're designed to be stored in folded stacks on a main spaceship.

Aw. I knew I should have put a smiley in there. All I mean is I'd rather do something more original, and I don't think the dev team want their APCs to look like they were lifted from movies or wherever.

Anyway, I have a basic design down now (it's kind of a souped-up Bradley). Thanks for the suggestions, people.

Sounds good Bitmap, if you would rather do it in Hammer thats even better. It dont need to be accessible, meaning im just going to make like a beacon place where it landed and its just going to sit there, nobody will be able to go outside and get in it. But I am planning on building a base around it and like a door where an APC has come through and that would be the Marine start point. Do you already have the docking craft in your map?

if someone draws up a cool enough design, i may be persuaded to model such a beast

Actually I have always thought dropships should be very utilitarian, The cockpit shoud be squarish with 2 seats, and a controlpanel Connected directly to a rear bay again a solid square like shape ( no friction in space no need for aireodynamics) mounted on 3 skid landing gear 2 in the rear one under the cockpit, a rear mounted egress ramp and across the top a wing plate with piviting vtol engines. inside should be a command chair set next to the cockpit and harness benches for rough landings.
