new monitor
so... my monitor is 5 years old... since i spilled juice on my keyboard the monitor is the only origional part on my rig (pc case omitted).
a 19 inch crt with a small and occasional creeping red flicker at the bottom right supressed for a while by degaussing my monitor.
but, i cant help but think my image quality will be poor, that i'm not seeing most of the games i play in their true eplendor without turning the brightness and contrast so high it threatens to burns my retina a permanent image.
so... i cant really go a lower size, when i use my friends pc with a smaller monitor i lose all sense of immersion.
so, i hear that lcd is better for your eyes (more 12 hour ns marathons), offers a sharper image (more cloaked skulks whining at my pistol whip), but an amount of ghosting and weak refresh rates (getting killed by leap skulks) even if the box values imply a good rate they seem to be rates they can run at perfectly on a perfect image.
crt, cheaper, more control and freedom on the resolution.
i dunno, before i was thinking LCD/TFT all the way, now i'm not so sure. Help!

technically, crt is better for gaming and media, it has a wider range and it's technology has been more advanced.
But the LCDs will do just as much damage to your eyes if you don't have proper lighting. And make sure that your LCD has DVI, that is essential.
i mean, i dont care about how my monitor handles firefox when i'm googling pr0n, but i'm not saying i wont be doing that.
but when i'm playing ns/ns:s/other games i want to be able to get the most out of it, my graphics card is a geforce 5700 fx, so its hardly top of the line, yet... it handles HL2, so i guess really i want it for games but having it do other things is dandy
so, your saying crt? i'm expecting to hear the same from others but any models/ranges you can recomend?
They do cost a bit more, but they are moste definately worth the extra.
I had mine for 10 yrs before the tubes died finally, and just replaced it with a refurbished one. Totally awesomesauce.
Massive leaps have been made that any ghosting, refresh rate or view angle issues on a TFT monitor are negligible (Except maybe not the last one, i still find it's an issue), but when it comes down to it, if you have the space, a CRT will set you back a lot less for a larger screen, without any refresh rate, ghosting or viewing angle issues, it's just plain value for money.
That, and the fixed resolutions on TFT monitors **** me off no end, the resolution's always too low for what i prefer working with.
Btw, degaussing reverses the effects that strong magnetic fields have caused. Do you have speakers or an electric motor in close vicinity to your monitor?

Its probably speakers.. or he has his computer too close with a side panel missing... shh.. that was my problem for a while. :-)
For lots of lan partying, or a small desk/room, go for the LCD/TFT. I have an LCD for both of those reasons, cost a pretty penny, but its got good picture quality and is decent resolution and size.
Some reccomendations for LCDs though:
For games 15ms responce time is MAXIMUM, 12 or lower is much more preferred.
Get something with a good contrast ratio, brightness matters only in well lit areas mostly, but contrast will make black look black, not grey or some other crap.
If you get a decent sized screen (i'd hope) get a minimum resolution of 1280x1024 or an equivalent, CRTs achieve almost any resolution you want, but some LCDs look really bad when not at their native resolution or a multiple thereof.

Agreed.
I have a Sony Multiscan G420, and it's the awseomest piece of awesome I've ever had. I forgot the pricetag, I bought it from my brother for 100 Euros (he wanted a new screen)
That was mainly my reasons for getting the TFT... freaking mointor is a **** to carry upstairs..
www.anandtech.com is the place to go for reviews. Don't go for a 8 or 12 ms just yet btw, they display less colours. E.g. an 8 ms display may be 8 bit not 16.
Take a peek at the 2005 fpw, its also used by apple and is tempting me muchly!
CRT's will still have the edge but i cba with a big box anymore.
I have an extremly old 15" TFT, because I haven't much room on my desk... and because I can play all day long without my starting to hurt.
One time I played ns when I was at my friends home. He has an CRT and ... oh em gee, it is ALOT faster than my old thing.
But I got used to the TFT so it would be difficult for me to switch over to a CRT.
You have to decide what is the best for you. I recommend you a CRT
needs thinking about..
now i think about it, since i grew more headphone dependant the gaussing isnt needed so much. so you are probably right there on the speakers being the issue.

size doesnt bother me, hell... i'm not even sure my monitor is poorly... but i've owned it 5 years.. a daewoo 715b and its a damn good monitor, i just wonder if i'm getting less out of my visuals than i could.. on the same hand, i am using onboard sound and 2.0(stereo) headphones.
so, yea... maybe i need to catch up somewhat >_<
Open a picture/webpage/graphic, watch a movie with action, and try to play a small game scene.
Normally, the vendor will be a little **** off if you spend too much time, but he should allow you to do some stuff to check it out. If he doesn't, organize a boycott
Honestly, the best you can do is look for yourself, ask for advice at the shop, and try a few.
I recommend CRT's for gamers. They are cheap, they last long amounts of time, and for gaming it doesn't get any better. You never here someone talking about lower response times for CRT's because they are made to be pure gaming ownage to begin with.
Fixed for logic.
I would recommend the TFT due to less space required and the ability to hook most up to DVI. I would also imagine (don't quote me on this though) that TFT will have longer life than CRT.
EDIT: You got to love the damn poopy terminology I am using from having no sleep in 46hours.

You loose the million dollar prize.
TFTs probaly have a max age of 3 years... at least thats a figure I picked about a year ago aftering getting my TFT.
Having said that... My TFT hasn't had any spots appearing yet, and is still as bright as the day I got it.
Oh and by the way... anyone who does have a TFT out there? Run a blank screensaver... It gives the monitor a break when you not there. (No TFTs do not suffer from the "burnt" image effect but those little bouncy electrons can get stuck if they keep bouncing for the same colour all the time (yeah I know really techie ))

You're thinking of the LCD backlight, which is usually a long-lasting CCFL. Also, monitor burning is virtually non-existant these days.
First one that I saw was Samsungs 172x with a response of 8ms, but I decided to wait. Now there's a new monitor coming out for a reasonable price;
Viewsonic VX924
It comes in at 4 ms response time (grey to grey)
Only bad thing i've seen really is that it's only 1280 * 1024. But the price should be ok, around $500.
I'm off to look at the performance as soon as I see a store that starts selling them here, and hopefully I will buy it.
