Watch Evangelion, just stop watching it around episode 18 or so, you'll only ruin what's a great series until that point.

Really Esuna, the writers were always whiny goth kids, it's just at episode 18 they starting taking drugs regularly (presumeably because their parents didn't understand them and they needed large amounts of ecstasy for that).
Seriously though, Evangelion is overrated in every respect. The animation itself is crap (I know because it was low budget, but it still doesn't help any), the characters are mostly all one dimensional each having one single large character flaw and one single easy explanation for said character flaw (with the exception of some of the minor characters who are simply never shown enough to have real character traits), the philosophy is really nothing more than extremely whiny passages stolen from any teen's poetry journal made to be "art" by constant repetition of the same themes intermingled with abstract pseudo-religious imagery and put in the context of an inner conflict (which we are only made to care about because this conflict conveniently decides the fate of Earth), and the action (which is the only really good part) is just kindof forgotten about for a good half of the series at which point it is replaced by the earlier referenced cliche musings. Overrated.

How do these amazing romaji skills figure into the ability to judge the quality of a translation? Romaji has no use other than to show-off in front of your animu nerd friends hoping to improve your status among them.
That said, most anything by Studio Ghibli would be a good starting point and GTO was rather funny. I haven't really watch much else in the way of Japanese animation aside from a few aforementioned well-known shows.
(I started Trigun and Evangelion but the main characters were unbelievably annoying.)

I like how it works out, with the psuedo-protagonist never really doing much (aside from the whole "I control the fact that humans can be humans again!" thing). He just kind of whines a lot, interspersed between one action scene per two episodes featuring giant robots fighting. It's what gives it the intersting aspect - instead of the 'whiny/comedic/anti-social hero/heroine gets a girl/boy and saves the world/reaches his dream aspiration'.
NGE is good for two things: trying to think poetically and trying to confuse your friends. It has no really deep meaning (a lot of the religious stuff is thrown in for the hell of it - like the souls that become crosses during the third impact).
I'm still kind of wondering why I'm able to purchase End of Evangelion...since Shinji is 13...maybe the MPAA doesn't watch anime? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Perhaps I'm a bit strange, but I much prefer the dubbed version of Trigun over the subbed (same with Cowboy Bebop), but every other one I've seen works better in Japanese.
No one seems to be recommending Samurai 7. It's pretty good. Only one character is annoying me (sporadically) so far, although the annoyance is conflicted cause there is a good reason behind it. It's based on Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai.
Plot from Wikipedia: <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> The village of Kanna is a nice rice village with a problem. However, they have no money and thus must find samurai willing to protect the village for the price of all the rice that he/she can eat. He sends three members of the village out to the city to begin looking. And thus the journey begins. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Kinda halfway through it (catching it on Animax although their translation seems to kind of suck sometiimes). It's at the stage where the plot is really starting to thicken with all the plot twists coming together, getting really interesting. The fight scenes are pretty bad **** too.
You know? I never even finished it. And I liked the original movie too. (Magnificent Seven was great too. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ) Shame.

hmmm, anime bassed on 7 Samurai...
must lok up!
As for NGE, I watched way to much "oohhh look I can screw with your head, have no real plot, and make anoyign characters" to even think of liking any more of them.
And if you want a GOOD dub: Gunsmith Cats (note, not a 'good' anime, it is fanservice and guns and explosions. Fun, but not 'good') The voices are all actualy good, all western (fits with the style), and none of them anoy me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
As for Bebop/trigun. Spike and Vash both have horrible voice actors in the dubs, thus kinda killing the entire thing.
Most of the Miyazaki Dubs are OK, though the tendancy to have atleast one annoying voiceactress in them... (monanoke, Kiki etc)
Has anyone said One Piece yet? I just started watching it and I have to say it's pretty cool. It's about pirates and stuff - The main character wants to become the Pirate King and find the ultimate treasure, One Piece.
Also I guess I'll say Love Hina as I don't recall seeing it in the thread - Basically it's a romance comedy type deal; a guy who's failed the entrance exam to Tokyo University twice suddenly becomes manager of what was once his grandma's inn, and now his aunt's girl's dorm (and, of course, the residents are slightly psychotic)... The manga's superior to the show, but if you're not into manga, try to see it. Just don't watch Love Hina Again.
Also if you're into anime and 2D fighters, pick up or rent the Street Fighter Anniversery Collection for PS2/Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike for Dreamcast. 3rd Strike's sprites have a rediculous amount of frames and the game feels pretty much like playing an anime (admittedly it's still a little behind the animation in, say, Ghost in the Shell, but it's at/past the level of DBZ).
And no, CowBoy BeeBop was NOT very well translated... they lost SOO much in the translation. I know BASIC romanji... not much... but a few of my friends are affluent in it. Evangelion was a fantastic mech anime, until the writers appeared to get replaced by 14 year old goths and they went off on a pseudo-intellectual tangent.
Watch Evangelion, just stop watching it around episode 18 or so, you'll only ruin what's a great series until that point.
Overrated.

Yeah... if you watch the English version...
English versions of most anime's suck simply cause we can't translate em right... watch the Japanese versions with a GOOD fan sub and you'll be pleased
Plus, you cannot get the full story yet- it's not finished! It's at Manga ch 400 or so... only at episode 170 I believe. I think they have ~ 200 eps planned total, or something like that. Cowboy Bebop was translated well. So, it's not like they couldn't have translated it well. Still, even if the English translation is a huge step down, you've still got bad plot, action, music, and cinematography to account for.
I can't really blame them for a low quailty anime. It's hard to make anything at a consistently high quality, with 400 comics, 170 episodes, and 4 movies.

I guess they've been doing the same thing as Dragonball. They recycle the same plots by gradually increasing the protagonist's fighting powers, while making the villians slightly different.
And no, CowBoy BeeBop was NOT very well translated... they lost SOO much in the translation. I know BASIC romanji... not much... but a few of my friends are affluent in it. Trust me... translating things sucks... especially since Japanese has words we don't even HAVE an equal to!
That said, most anything by Studio Ghibli would be a good starting point and GTO was rather funny. I haven't really watch much else in the way of Japanese animation aside from a few aforementioned well-known shows.
(I started Trigun and Evangelion but the main characters were unbelievably annoying.)
Are u sure? The TV series ended with ep 167 thats for sure. And from what I heard by that point the plot hasnt moved significantly and it was WAY open ended.
CUrious would you know how close does the Inuyasha anime follow the manga though?

Well yeah I know that Thansal, but I have to classify it by what shows up. Someone who's never seen any of it, isn't going to know any of that.
I mean I guess I could put it into the Philisophical / Special Interest section, but I could put RahXephon there too if I wanted. See once you open up that can of worms, <i>anything</i> is open to interpretation.
Philisophical/special interest/ANGST set in a mecha universe.

oh, and Inuyasha is fun! It is kinda like if you had american cartoons and then gave them a continuing storyline.
It isn't GOOD, just fun (kinda like alot of american movies are drivel, but if you are willing to look past it, then they are fun!)

like between (I believe) episode 78 and 79, movie 1 came in... that was InuYasha and Kagome's first "romantic" moment...
movie 2 has them kiss... and InuYasha says he'll stay as a hanyou FOR kagome
Movie 3 is just pure squishyness
And movie 4 is gonna be good

I'd type more, but I'm at my grandparents so I dun have all my eps here...
My fav ep- is the ONE they never could air... the Kitty Kagome episode kehkehkeh... was a Halloween, and Kagerz had had a little to drink... and decided to tease poor Inu-kun by dressing up in a tight, pink, neko costume... hehehe. Never shown anywhere, and the Manga ch. was stricken from the series.
Yeah I know exactly what you mean. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's not really an ...up-beat show.
I'm still kind of wondering why I'm able to purchase End of Evangelion...since Shinji is 13...maybe the MPAA doesn't watch anime? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Perhaps I'm a bit strange, but I much prefer the dubbed version of Trigun over the subbed (same with Cowboy Bebop), but every other one I've seen works better in Japanese.
Plot from Wikipedia:

The village of Kanna is a nice rice village with a problem. Every year during harvest time huge mechanical robots, known as the Bandits, come and steal away almost all of the rice that had been harvested that year. Not only that, the Bandits are becoming more demanding, now taking women and children in addition to rice. The elder of Kanna has declared that to protect the village they must hire samurai. However, they have no money and thus must find samurai willing to protect the village for the price of all the rice that he/she can eat. He sends three members of the village out to the city to begin looking. And thus the journey begins.

Kinda halfway through it (catching it on Animax although their translation seems to kind of suck sometiimes). It's at the stage where the plot is really starting to thicken with all the plot twists coming together, getting really interesting. The fight scenes are pretty bad **** too.
must lok up!
