Preparation is the key, as with any painting project. I really need to know what's on it currently. Assuming it's currently unprotected, give it a thorough cleaning first. TSP or a deck cleaner is recommended, but household bleach works well in a pinch. I like to put a 50/50 mixture of bleach/water in a garden sprayer and pre-soak the area to be covered, then pressure wash it off.
Let it dry thoroughly. I would recommend any stain by Behr. Don't let the word "stain" fool ya - there are several types, some are translucent and some are opaque. Thompson's Water Seal is overated imho. Apply with a roller and do trim with a brush.
Think I'll create a thread in Off Topic regarding home improvement ... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<b>Disclaimer:</b> I am no longer employed by Home Depot but spent 2 years in their employ. As such any advice I give comes strictly from my vast knowledge base of home improvement projects.
you probably want to do a security check around the house. ask neighbors if there is a history of crime in the neighborhood (stolen cars, grow ops, etc)
-does it have an alarm system? if no, maybe investigate into purchasing a security plan. if yes, check to see that all motion sensors and door/window sensors are working -which windows are vulnerable to be broken into? do these need to be reinforced with bars? most basement windows apply -are there any trees/shrubs/bushes etc that block the view of the house from the street that makes it easy for theives to break in unnoticed in broad daylight? might want to do some logging or trimming if yes -you probably also want to change all the locks. -tresspassing is a problem in some areas, do you want to invest in a fence/gate? -if you have carpets you probably want to have them cleaned so that the organic material from the old residents (and pets) arn't still around -make a fire escape plan for the family, make sure there are emergency supplies like flashlights and fresh water and durable foods on every floor. if the staircase is on fire how are you going to get out of the house?
I just created the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=92888' target='_blank'>Home Improvement: Post Your Projects Here</a> The NS Home Improvement How To Clinic thread for those interested in this type of handy work.

since most of the things i was thinking of have already been said i suggest you change your locks before you move in you never know who has copys of what
From experience, now is possibly the best time to do big projects on the house. Be prepared for things to go wrong and to take a long time though if you bite off more than you can chew on something. Especially if you have a job/normal life to lead.
Also, while doing everything yourself is cheap and fun, its amazing how much more quickly a tradesman can do a job than you can, often to a higher standard. I saw a joiner hang 4 brand new doors in the space of 30 minutes. Impressive. Not exactly cheap but impressive.
If you use a plumber/electrician/builder etc etc, make sure you have a fridge with beer in it. It's amazing what handing out a few cold beers at the end of a long day can get you.
Agree with handing out beers, and with getting a professional to do it sometimes. However really for most projects you can get it done yourself without any noticeable difference. Hanging doors, installing a new faucet, putting in an electrical socket. These can all be done yourself with minimal trouble, even if it takes a bit longer than a professional. Now if you are talking about installing a new sink, replacing wiring, framing a new door. You probably want someone to come do those for you, least I do. While I can do them, it is worth it to me to have someone else do them. That and putting in insulation, F that crap, I detest it, definatley worth paying someone else to do.

So let me ask this, Depot.. If I found instructions on how to run cable on the net, would those be more/less relevant than getting the same "type" of help from Home Depot?
Just wondering on the specifics of network cabling if the Home Depot guys would know about this.

I could walk into any Home Depot and, given 3 minutes if conversation, determine if this dude (or dudette) knows what they are talking about. In any given department there <i>should</i> be 2 or 3 very qualified associates. Tell ya what, to be safe ask for the Department Head!
All associates are (or were at the time of my employ) required to receive training in all departments, so that everyone would have at least a basic knowledge of the entire store. But in answer to your question, look for an older (maybe retired?) associate in that department who has been with the company for a while.

Well, she already knows I have a little girl.
So let me ask this, Depot.. If I found instructions on how to run cable on the net, would those be more/less relevant than getting the same "type" of help from Home Depot?
Just wondering on the specifics of network cabling if the Home Depot guys would know about this.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

In regards to the help you'd get at Home Depot regarding networking, I refer you to my earlier post, <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Travel there (on a non-weekend day) and befriend several associates in the departments you will frequent, such as hardware, building materials, and outside garden. Try to select seasoned associates who know what they're talking about.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->Were you to go into MY Home Depot I could refer you to an associate who is brilliant regarding networking.
