A Skulk Speaks

<div class="IPBDescription">Tips for newbie marines</div> *chuckle*
*pounce*
*chomp*

Ah, that's better. Now, on to the tips

First, please travel around alone. A couple of skulks confronted with a lone marine will recognise instantly that you must be a highly-experienced, brave and very dangerous killing machine, and we will normally flee in terror.

You know those high celings and dark corners? Don't worry about them. Skulks are afraid of both heights and the dark and we *never* hide up there, waiting to drop on you.

A good place for marines to stand around waiting for orders is directly beneath a vent. The pleasant breeze from the air-conditioning will soothe you, and that chuckling sound is just the wind blowing through.

If your HUD says "parasite detected" don't be concerned. These old buildings are full of lice and fleas, so it's a common occurence. Don't let it stop you wandering off anywhere.

When entering a new room don't take the time to check the wall above the entrance. It's more important to scan the floor for skulk footprints and the like. That's right, keep looking down.

Show you're a real man. Drop that wimpy rifle at base and get your knife out instead.

Turrets! We hate turrets, so put lots of them outside your base to scare us off. Don't bother putting any inside the base (near the command chair, for example) as no skulk would be foolhardy enough to risk running past them to chomp the commander.
You also don't need that many near your turret factories, for the same reason. Spread them out into the corridor instead.

Skulks are afraid of fire, and when we see a vent with a "weldable" fire-symbol on it we won't go anywhere near it, so don't waste your precious time and resources sealing those vents, especially the ones that open into the middle of your base.

And finally, remember that skulks are just big friendly cuddly dogs. We're really misunderstood. When pack of howling beasts comes hurtling down the corridor to you, along the walls and ceilings, we just want to play and be petted, so try not to get jumpy and start shooting everywhere by accident.

*chuckle*

Ah, the wonders of modern communication! I have long known that skulks are no threat to us! Now they speak up!

That "regenerating" dshlup-shlup-dshlup sound is *not* a well defended bity-pointy area getting healed! The skulks are merely drinking! Would the corruption in the Frontiersmen bring them to attack such poor beasts for quenching their thirst?! Oh, the inhumanity!

There may have been some early accidents, but the tendon-tearing bites are purely affectionate! How dare you respond with high calibre rounds!

Skulks are benign creatures! The Kharaa are your friends!

Even as I speak, a Fade is coming to congratulate me on my views! See how he embrac- *thrrruppt*. Ow.

I finally started to like playing as the aliens last night because I stopped trying to play like a marine. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Waiting above the entrance in ns_caged, parasiting any marine that walked out.

Once they were *all* parasited, I waited with another Skulk and a Lerk in stability monitoring in a vent - when the lerk popped up, when dropped behind the marines and chomped em good. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I don't mind playing as the aliens now, it's a blast.

Welcome to the converted, Flatline. Alien is a blast.. Only time I ever play Marine is to balance teams..

There's just something addictive about hiding in a dark ceiling waiting for an unsuspecting marine or two to walk by. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Converted? I think not! I'm still a much better commander than I am marine or alien - but I won't hesitate to join aliens anymore if the teams are uneven.

Yeah, this weekend I finally learned the joys of playing alien. Before all I would play would be marine, I'd even leave the server if I would have to go alien to have even teams.

But this weekend I truly owned some people as a skulk. What map is it where there is a resource nozzle with a vent on the wall next to it that goes in a long diangonal path up then to the right over to the hive? Anyways on that map I caught some marines trying to set up a res base there and I took them and all their buildings out. Then I jumped up in that vent and waited. Here they came back to build it again. Oh wait let him start building something! Now come screaming down that vent! PWNED!!!

That was fun stuff man. =)

Kharaa and human can live in perfect unity. Onoses will be ranched, skulk-buckets from KFC will replace the need for chicken, and every family will want a cute, loveable gorge name George in the not-so-distant future (the KFC part happens now, actually <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> ).

    Good post, good points.

This kind of behavior has nearly gotten a few people banned from spider, and has easily gotten many kicked. Don't be single team lamers, or if you do, at least make it alien - everyone else will join marine anyway.

Assimilated? Nah. The only reason I was remotely interested in this mod is because I'm an RTS gamer. Warcraft, Myth: TFL, Starcraft, Age of Empires, Battle Realms - that's where it's at.

I've got games outside of the RTS genre (well, Half-Life for one!), but I still put RTS above all else. When you win at an RTS, in most cases, it means that you're *smarter* than your opponent - not that you were a split-second faster on the trigger.

Or have 15 ping... Well at least ping does not matter as much as it does in CS.

I also mainly play strategy games, and I usually refuse to play marine unless I am the commander. I have never played with a decent commander more than once so far, and the marines get creamed unless the aliens are equally stupid.

I like to play alien a lot, as it gives me a fun time, as I can go "commander" or "warrior" at will, purforming the duties of a gorge if the team needs it, or doing the same as a skulk -> fade.

If you get out of the commander's chair, on most servers, chances are that you will not be able to get in again.

Same with me. Once I get in, I never get out. I usually either knife the stoopid skulk (I get 5-20 ping on my server), use me LMG, or give myself a grenade launcher to deal with the far-off/vent punks.

Yeah, I was just talking about games where you might have to get out to kill some stupid skulk having fun munching your chair, then a moron newbie spawns from dying to a gorge, and immediately hops in your chair...
Other odd circumstances also make me get out sometimes, but they are so rare that they dont count...
  • RainmanRainman Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8820Members
One time I was in the chair and the skulk rush killed every marine in the base. I immediately hopped out and mowed down the three remaining skulks who were headed straight for the chair in a cute little line. I'm sure they had been hurt in the battle, but it still felt pretty darn good, and if I had hesitated a second longer, I'm sure I would have died, too. They would have been all over the CC and not lined up like ducks in a row.

Personally, I don't think its the cool factor, I think its the hilarity of the event. Either way, if there's no armory nearby, why waste ammunition on an egg or a resource tower? I'm normally an alien player, don't knife my egg.

Ahh, best moment ever involved a knifing marine...

I was a Fade, and I'd just killed two normal marines before succumbing to their just-researched heavies. I quickly returned as a skulk, and ran up the corridor, closely followed by another skulky chum. But a HA turned the corner- his HMG splattered my unfortunate comrade, and I knew I was dead. However, all that happened was a clicking sound... the marine holstered his empty HMG, drew his knife, and took one step forward...

Then the Fade to his side decloaked, and tore the over-confident **obscenity** in half <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well, since it seems to be open-mike night for Skulks, I think I'll entertain the food a little. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Bases. We never like going there, not at the start or the end of the match. We'd never come dashing in to play within 30 seconds. Don't even bother being ready to fire. In fact, have your knives out.

And speaking of bases - we Skulks are afraid of unfinished buildings. The best way to keep us out of your base is to not build anything the commander places. Just rush out and sit all by yourself. Even if the building is out in the field - don't worry about it. We hate turrets under construction, because we can't tell them from the real thing.

We also hate resource nozzles. We never go looking for the things. They scare us because the great Skulk "Bob" was once thrown into the air by a geyser, so if we see them we definitely won't be waiting above to chomp on some Marine helmet.

A little known fact about Skulks is that they are totally deaf. We can't hear you spamming the commander with your requests for ammo and medpacks. And we certainly can't hear your big clumsy oafish armour clunking all down the hallway. And a Skulk would never, ever rush in to attack a Marine who was begging for medpacks.

Skulks always travel alone. We never go hunting in packs, so if you see a Skulk dart out to chuckle at you and run away, feel free to chase him like the cute little dog he is. There certainly wouldn't be a Fade waiting around the corner to eat you.

As opposed to our firm stance against hating unfinished buildings, we LOVE finished buildings. Later on in the game, we get lonely and like to cuddle up to the buildings for warmth. Don't worry about anything, we're not going to bite you. Just run right up and pet us while we snuggle up between your turret factory and spawn portal.

    <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->

It was a result of them all running up the steps towards the CC. They were closely grouped, one following the other. Not that they were just standing around, but because of the angle that they were approaching, I hardly had to change my aim, they just all ran into my sights. ;^)

I've only ever been successful with the knife on alien resource towers, where I find it an excellent way to conserve ammo. Guess I'm not 1337 enough to use the knife. ;^P

There is only one time I will attempt to kill an alien with a knife. That is during late game when the marines are stuck in base. Once the onos come, I get out the knife and bounce around the room holding the fire button. Sadly, I have actually gotten two kills like this. (One assisted, one not assisted but probably hurt beforehand.)
  • ekentekent Join Date: 2002-11-08 Member: 7801Members
I always try to knife Onos if I'm just a basic marine, because it's not like the LMG is going to have much effect anyway. And circle strafe-jumping around the alien makes it nearly impossible for him to kill you without help. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
