After watching that trailer how the marines were walking into the compound from the landing pad i was thinking it would be awesome to have all the marines land in the map and walk into the base then setup\find the comm chair.

It would kind of give it that "okay there's something bad going down at this outpost and we're here to check it out.

Maybe it would drop off 3 or 4 marines and from there they would have to build IPs for the rest of the marines to reinforce. If you wanted to make it a similar start for aliens you could just have them spawn in holes in the wall that they crawl out of when they start. Or get a cool "heavy infestation" texture to put in the holes so it looks like a nest. Of course that might make the map look crappy after you have 15 of them around a hive start :-/

Maybe in NS:Source :-P, thinking up stuff is the easy part, actually doing it is probably harder than hell

EDIT: or, from what i can think of in source you could use those prisonerpod chairs to keep everybody locked in until the ship comes to a stop then open them all up so everybody can get out.

You guys are probably getting tired of hearing about source hehe

It was actually one of the features in the original design doc. There are a few ways of making this work; we'll see.

Or in reality, have the entire marine team spawn in a drop ship. It takes a "path" (could be faked with moving textures) and lands, doors open, marines rush to Marine Start, lets say somewhere across the map. Aliens spawn in one at a time, thus balancing the time it takes the marines to move to MS.

    I don't see a point to this.

Having it happen once at the start of a map would be O.K, and maybe only a couple of maps did it...

    Otherwise, what's the point?

this reminded me of 2 things.

    1)omaha beach......a dropship comes. 5skulks jump in,screams... 5 skulks come out.
2)My days when i played Operation Flashpoint. There were 3 helis, 3 landing pads, 3 same time starts. So i dont remember how we got there but basicly we managed to get all 3 helis almost stacked and the middle chopper crashed us all.

    but it would look cool.

eee 1 queston tho....how do aliens travel then?

Other infested ships docking with ships, space debris/trash, and tainted civilians and marines that spread the bacteria to other locations.

Let's say a civilian aristocrat lands on the Kharaa world. He gets dirt on his clothes carrying the Bacteria. The bacteria moves to the rest of his crew. The crew then splits up after scouring a new world. They infect Space Station Hera and Bast. From Hera the team moves to Caged, and from Bast the team infects civilians that travel to Nothing, while the crew of the original ship goes to Ayumi.

    Think of it this way--

Hmm... a "docking bay" next to the spawns could be feasable. It would be a simple mapping project. The starting "movie" for marines:

Your view fades from black to the picture around you. You're standing inside a small ship. One person is the "driver," simply getting a different view. You slowly approach the vessel that you are to enter. You hear some beeping, and the ship docks. Now, this is all interactive (meaning you can move around, not much else), and there could, be like, 10 people per ship (spawn points.) 2 ships dock. The first marine walks off the ship slowly.

The aliens, you can just imagine the possiblity of the Kharaa, like, lower lifeforms being shot from the hive and gestating into a skulk immediately upon contact with the floor.

Edit: Another idea: Tortured and infected humans littered upon the halls of the hives. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> You know, the humans that have been infected by the bacterium and killed for their natural resources. and heat.

The marines wouldnt have to walk anywhere when the dropship dropped them off, the round would start normally as they did now. This would work in source, when there is a redesign of the maps ported, it would be up to the mapper to include a hatch or something with a dropship visibly taking off outside. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Shouldn't Veil be next to Eclipse, as they are part of the same station? (IIRC)

Regarding Hera/Bast - I think it would make more sense if Bast contained the traces first, and at some point made a cargo stop at Hera on its way out of/through the Aridian arm. Hera is meant to be an ideal trafficking/communications spot. Don't ask me why - something to do with it being on the edge of the Aridian, hence why it is one of the earliest Kharaa/TSA encounters. Bast I suppose would logically be near it after the bacterium took over - perhaps it decided to evolve its state once it had spread to Hera in the knowledge that were one of the two human constructions it resides in to be obliterated/cleaned, the other would survive. As Hera is a TSA trafficking planet this would mean many other ships would also pass through on the way into/out of the Aridian arm, I suppose many stopping off for supplies/packages/recreation/whatever. (Hera, the planet, is meant to house a sprawling complex for communications and other such things - sort of like a bridge toll booth, sattelite, collection/storage point, TSA representative and highway gas station all in one. Most of those I just made up on the spot. ns_hera takes place in Station 16-B, primarily a communications outpost.)

So with my theory, it would go Kharaa Residence #X -> Bast -> Hera -> Any ships passing through.

And that kinda makes sense in a real way as Relic25 started work on Bast before I came on the scene and started work on Hera, so Bast would be subjected to the infection first <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Actually, looking at it like that, ns_solar would be where the infection started. Except it was never released because it was just a test map Flayra made <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    <edit>
There are so many flaws in that little theory I made up that it's silly, but hey. I personally wouldn't like to think that Hera is responsible for the spread of the bacteria to other ships and stations (as that does seem rather far fetched), no doubt there are other cases of the bacteria being picked up from non-human sources - unless of course the entire infestation started with Bast by a freak occurance with no other record of it being started anywhere else, which is a poetic thought admittedly (especially considering the ties between Alien's ship Nostoro and Bast).

    okay, think about this.
anyone remember the cinematic scene from starcraft? where they go into the abandonded space vessel and set up a bomb? well, they unweld the door or whatever.
for every game started (map specific) you could have a camera pan across the room, focusing on the door, sort of like this.

    ..door
\_____/ <-- with this as the camera trail

And the marines coming out, after welding the door opening, then play starts or whatever.

Just a suggestion? Or maybe an entire section of MS just clipping on, and a wall folding down or something?

btw, maybe this should be moved to I&S, as it's kinda turned into one.

making long cutscenes dont do too well though, DayOfDefeat had one for the premier of one of the Paratroop maps. I think the best way to do this would be a dropship that as a floor panel that drops to the ground (Attached by Hyrdralic Cylinders.) As soon as it hits the ground, a func push will repel everyone way from it.(If they don't move on their own that is.) then the drop pad will retract and the ship will rumble off, making a booming noise as it shakes the marines screen. Their last hope of leaving gone. Very cinematic.
Still, the coders just have to implement code to reset everything at round start, and let the mappers go at it.

Actually, this was one of the first ideas for NS. I wanted the marines to arrive to the map via dropship, and during that time the aliens spawned on the map and had a free run of the station. In the 30 seconds or so it would take to land, the aliens could set up defenses, morph into lifeforms, and position themselves wherever they wanted. It was one of those ideas that probably would've worked better in theory then in practice.

That said, this is something we'd be interested in tackling again in the future. I love the concept of adding short cinematic 'single-player' set-pieces to multiplayer.

Was really wishing for the ability for aliens to have the chance to run amok a map for a while last night, funnily enough. Give the game more of that "we're trying to purge the infestation" feel rather than "we've both arrived pretty much at the same time" feel.

Heh...it could work though: if the marine start of each map was cut off from the rest of the map and only way to access it all would be to do a few welds near the marine starts...course, this'd mean that all marines would have to start with welders...initial one-time welders that is...respawning with welders would of course be a no-no..

I suppose the initial resource count for all khaara's would then have to be lowered by 5-10...

You would have to make it so that the kharra just couldn't rush marine start and have 10 skulks waiting for them to open the door

a cool thing would be to "weld" open the marine start and where the comm chair is located (this could vary map to map if wanted) like its been sealed off for quite a while. But then everybody would have to have welders at first (even if you provided one at the weld point some idiot would take it and run off not even knowing that he picked it up and people screaming at him, i can see it now)

Or after the comm chair has a commander then everybody should be able to just keep the welders as "initial arnament" until they die then the commander will hafta drop more.

I like the garbled comms in the background of that trailer. I personally spam the voice comm, but not in an annoying way, just random communications that makes it sound like massive combat is happening on the other side of the station. I'd love to have an actual way of putting in garbled comm, I think it would greatly increase the atmosphere of the marine team if they had a near constant bit of voice in their ear speaking about situations elsewhere on the station.
  • niaccurshiniaccurshi Join Date: 2002-12-30 Member: 11629Members, Constellation
aye, deffinately...that would be really cool for the atmosphere. Well if you wanted to avoid skulks camping the dropship landing zones, then you could just have a couple of turrets on either side of the dropships, and maybe a few escort fighters coming along to the landing zone, clearing it of any skulks stupid enough to come near, dropping off the marines, and then flying off.

The vehicle code in source should be more than capable of handling any dropships, fighters, innocent civilians trapped inside the station, whatever. It can also do some pretty cool "simulated battle" effects, like when you are on top of the combine building in HL2 (right before the massive strider battle), and you can look down and see guns firing off in all directions down below. If you noclip and fly down there you'll see that most of the visible gunfire is coming from an invisible point in the air and is firing at absolutely nothing. It's far more possible in a source mod to let the players believe they are smack dab in the middle of a large-scale fight while limiting them to a small scale area.

Just another suggestion, keep the current marine spawning as is but marine players who join the game/server after the game has begun get flown in by dropship.
