Alien Flashlight

Improved your game ?
I've gotten into the habbit now of turning my flashlight on straight after I spawn and it's improved my alien game a lot. I've always played with dark gamma settings and seeing marines was really a pain sometimes, now they run around with big "Bite-Me" signs attached to their backs and parasiting distant marines is a breeze. Anyone else's game improved because of this ?

I don't know if the flashlight itself has improved my game persay... but I can't play very well if I forget to turn it on any more.

The only reason I ever intentionally turn the flashlight off is to see weather an object is cloaked or not.

IMHO I think the dev team should just bite the bullet and impliment the flashlight as the aliens primary viewtype. Everyone just turns it on right away as soon as they spawn anyways.

everyone? i know i never use it (ok, maybe in the hera fog corridor) and i havent heard anyone else even mention it. i can run a quick poll tho but i doubt its as popular as you seem to think.

besides, it hurts my eyes to look at the hive when it's on :x

It hasn't improved my game, but what can you expect? I'm easily the worst skulk in the world.

At default gamma and brightness, I can see just fine is dark corners, hallways, rooms, etc... if this was the default view, it'd be pretty damn annoying as it makes everything look freakishly bright and crappy.

I havn't even used it yet.. Why would I.. Seems annoying to me. I can see marine just fine.

Guess it's just me then...I used to even get Enhanced Sight when it was around, now it's free

helped my game immensly. my skill at skulk and fade nearly tripled as a result, since my biggest problem was keeping track of my target, and with the way bite covers the screen for a nice chunk of time when biting rapidly, i couldnt track people easily.

now i can see my target(s) at all times. if i hit the right angle, groups of 2-4 marines have fallen to my skulk.

I don't use it, I find it actually distracts me. It feels like I'm using some kind of wallhack (except for the see through wall part ) with the semi transparent look.

As soon as i spawn - its on.

Helps immesurably - no hiding in corners for 'rines. Helps in melees as well - aliens dont block marine positions due to additive effect.

it's helped me a few times, mostly when it was too dark for me to see the marines around. but it sure is a helpful addition

It certainly helps since my gamma is rather low.

I think alien flash needs to be toned down a bit and made the primary viewtype as well. The fact is, it's such a powerful feature, and yet many new players don't know to turn it on (and will never know to turn it on), leaving us with a huge but pointless skill advantage/disadvantage.

Again though, the effect needs to be toned down a bit. Perhaps keep marines the way they are, but dim the aliens and chambers a lot so they don't look quite so day-glo.

I only use it in real real dark places to find hiden marines..
Otherwise it's just way too bright *where are my sunglasses*

I have kept all the factory settings on the monitor and in the HL game, if you think things are too bright one of those two factors are turned way up.

It has really improved my ambushing skills as you can see when the rines pass by you easier. Much more fun in the dark corners.

Personally I don't think the gamma should be able to be adjusted... the maps are far too bright as it is, but then I love darker maps.

it's helped slightly on normal maps, but really makes a difference in maps with super dark areas like daimos

When you are on top of the hive (healing before going back into battle, or healing the hive as a gorge), it's nice to be able to see through it. Also, there's one map (co_core I think, I still don't know the name of most of the combat maps) with a corner in the hive that is impossible to see anything in without the flashlight.

If bright colors on your monitor hurt your eyes, you spend way too much time indoors.
  • NecrosisNecrosis The Loquacious Sage Join Date: 2003-08-03 Member: 18828Members, Constellation
Its good for seeing through alien structures.

I haven't boosted my gamma, so I also find it very handy in dim places. If you boost your gamma to unreasonable levels then of course you will have no real need for it. Those of us who play NS at the intended light level will of course reap huge benefits.

I actually completely forgot about this change... I've never used it.

And Necrosis, there is no 'intended' level of gamma, only default. That's why the variables can be changed.

What's the "intended" light level of an NS map though?

Personally, I think it should be in the mappers guidelines that every ready-room has a "lighting level setting" area.

This area would consist of a marked space to look from and a couple of items to look at. The lighting level should be set such that if your monitor and gamma is set correctly, you can see one but not the other. The items can be anything, even signs on the wall.

Whether people adhere to this is something that can't be controlled, but at least there'd be a way to see if we're seeing the map the way it's intended.

Actually.. I should probably drop this over in the I&S forum as well.

I keep my gamma relatively low, and it's good to see that playing for atmosphere doesn't jeopardize my effectiveness in killing. The map can look dark and I can still see everything.
