Massive Lag Issue

Bacon_BitsBacon_Bits Join Date: 2002-02-05 Member: 167Members
whenever I play in a server with more than I'd guess about 10 people and combat erupts I get lagged horribly. I asked for help on this in the IRC channel and the only response was "server issues" but when I asked why it only seems effects me (I look at the score board my ping is around 700 while everone else's is normal) noone said anything. So can anyone either elaborate on what kind of "server issue" would target individual users, or let me know what I'm doing wrong, I would be very appreciative

Some information like your connection speed/type, and your values for rate, cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate would be useful to figure out what's wrong.

256k ADSL, all my rate values are at default, and this problem as I said exists only with NS, and only with the most recent update

1) default values ore not necesarily good.

there also seems to be issues with the servers atm...

Bacon Bits is the 2nd person that I have heard having this problem and their internet connectin is DSL.
I am person 3.
My DSL is with SBC and I pay a little bit more for the higher connection rate (768?).

Might this be a problem with DSL and/or the settings set on the computer when DSL is installed on the computer?

Just my 2 cents worth.

Well, I just read another posting of someone having the same problem but he has cable modem.
So much for my theory.

My other stats are I have a 60 GB hard drive that is not even half full.
Just defragged last week.
CPU is AMD 2.1
Vid card is GE Force FX 5700 LE with the most updated drivers installed. Made by [BFG Tech]
Windows XP with all the latest updates.
Case has 5 or 6 fans and CPU is water cooled.

I was not having this kind of slow down problem until 3.0 final.
Before (beta 5), I started playing and it was lagging and slow - it was constantly that laggy and slow all way through.
...in which case I would leave and try to find a better server.
Now, things start out great but as soon as the first bite or shot is fired, ping shoots to 400 and more. The most I have caught it is 700 +

If you're the only one with the problems, then it's likely your rate settings. Go into Steam's Internet settings and try out the different settings. If those don't work, then you can try some custom settings.

Does this happen on every server, or just some?

Do you have any network clogging apps up, like P2P? Are you sure you don't have any viruses/spyware clogging up your connection?

I don't think it has anything to do with DSL. It may have something to do with your ISP, but DSL is just as good as cable or a T1 or anything.

Also, you've got a Geforce LE, but you have water cooling??? That's an extremely odd combination.

I am having the same problom. When ever I see more than 2 people on screen I get very bad lagg, up to 4000, but normaly around 600.

I have a Geforce 5500 oc. I am running a cable modem fast connection.
Everything is deafult, I even re installed NS.

I can play any other game, and my comp runns great. UT 2004, HL2 dm

I have the same problem.
Massive lag spikes.

Problem started with 3.0, im on 56k, using default rates, no spyware etc.

Previous versions of NS ran fine. Even other games run fine for me like CS:S.

Some things i have noticed.

In Net_Graph under "In" the value would jump to a few thousand.

At the same time i can hear the shotgun pump action sound being repeated extremely fast. Its like if you had a button that played that sound and you pushed it faster than superman could.

it was the steam settings... it was set on 56k...thanks for suggesting to look there rather than jsut saying "server issues" and ignoring me god I feel like such a moron right now... I had just re-installed steam...must not have fixed that...the thing that bugs me is why did HL2 DM still work fine?

Wow, you are correct. Mine was set to 56k also, and changing it fixed the problem. Odd that it never affected other hl mods... Its hard to adjust now that i'm so used to trying to hit ppl while they teleport Thanks guys!

If you're on 56k, then there's not much you can do to reduce lag. Be glad that you get 100 in the readyroom.

But I AM on 56k and i still get spikes out of the norm.
• PathdrcPathdrc Join Date: 2005-03-08 Member: 44289Members
Changing Steam Settings, on the Internet tab from "Internet connection speed" of 56 K to DSL > 768 worked for me too.

Awesome!

I think we have a fix guys.

Ok i still have this problem.

I get huge spikes and that weird pump action sound is still there.

I have no idea WTH is going on as ive never had this problem with ns or any other game before.

I've had the shotgun pump sound a couple of time, but my lag is the same its always been with ns. Very minimal. I've gotten the shotgun pump sound at the weirdest times too, once when I ws lerk just flying around, all of a sudden, there it was. Don't know what triggered it, but it seems to happen to me most when I'm aliens, or maybe thats just when I notice it most because I'm listening for gun reloading sounds and stuff.

im having the same problem.. i changed mine from 56k to the high dsl one.. i thought it was my mouse, but after 3 different mice, i ruled that out.

i really think theres just some bug or some goofy glitch that certain people are getting affected by.. and its really disappointing... before now, i could play 3+hrs in a row, and now i play for 30mins and i just get so frustrated after lagging and not being able to control my guy and dying.

maybe someone is aware of it and is looking into it... who knows.

have you disabled QoSpacketSchedular?
• EkinEkin Join Date: 2005-03-08 Member: 44319Members
QoS was unisntalled long ago.

Ok i understand the pump action sound is a bug and that will be fixed (funny that no one here could tell me that).

That bug may or may not be related to the massive lag spikes i get. Other ppl get the shotgun sound bug but dont experience the lag that comes withs it like i do and probably other 56kers do.
