The Sony Psp Thread
<div class="IPBDescription">Nintendoids keep out!</div> I have a PSP <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

So here's a PSP! It's smaller than you expect, weighs practically nothing and has an awesome build quality. It iconifies the whole idea of Japanese stuff, very high tech and expensive feeling.
The screen is awesome, it's a bigger than normal (And more expensive!) PDAs and very high quality. No dead pixels here thank god, some people get them and it's kind of like LCD monitors where you have to pray you don't get any.
The whole PSP unit and most of the box is marked in English so it's quite easy to work with, setting the language was a bit trickier but there is a English version of the manual available on the net.
<img src='http://www.commando.cursorkeys.com/psp/PSP2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Metal Gear Acid box + UMD. It's a bit smaller than a DVD case. The manual uses most of the space as you can see.
<img src='http://www.commando.cursorkeys.com/psp/PSP3.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
PSP-UMD-CD comparison, they are very compact. UMD's are a touch larger than Minidisk and the PSP itself is quite a small size.
<img src='http://www.commando.cursorkeys.com/psp/PSP4.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
This is showing off the screen brightness which you can see is awesome. Definately not a similar story to the old GBA! Try to avoid sunlight though as it reflects quite a bit, it's fine in artificial light. There are three brightness levels and a special uber bright one when you have it plugged into the DC power supply.
I have not worn the battery fully down yet (About two hours thirty use total plus plenty of sleep use). Analogue stick is small and works a bit weirdly but there's nothing bad about it, it's not used much in MGA though so I will have more comments to make when Ridge Racers arrive. I've noticed no difference between the square button and any of the others.
<b>Metal Gear Acid mini review</b>
I played Metal Gear Solid a long time ago on the Playstation and I picked up Metal Gear 2 Substance for the Xbox just last week. Metal Gear Acid ditches the familiar gameplay of the previous games for a card based tactical game. Whilst this might sound crappy, it's not a card game like poker, the cards merely represent moves, equipment and abilities. If you've played any turn based game you'll feel right at home with how it works and it's quite straightforward to play.
The real difficulty comes from the English/Japanese mix of the game. Whilst the menus and most gameplay text is in English, storyline conversations and card details are in Japanese. This means that a lot of the time you have no real idea what is going on, or what a particular card does. Experimentation is therefore very important and it isn't that hard to figure out what most things do, but there's still a lot of unreadable text to skip and you're going to be confused at times.
Graphics are nearly MGS2 quality. In some places you get cutscenes from the PS1 version of MGS and you can really see how much better the PSP version is, although there isn't anywhere near as much fine detail MGS2.
Sound is really strong. The PSP shines on headphones and it's hear that the excellent music and sounds are really noticeable.
If you import a PSP I'd recommend this, it's playable, not a crazy Japanese game (Well... not much more than the previous Metal Gear games) and has just enough English for you to make sense of it.

Versions of the old songs and tracks? Wireless multiplayer? Mercy!
How much did you pay?
Near-PS2 Graphics + Wireless B + Hot Release Title = Me creaming my pants.
Also, I thought it wasn't out in the U.S. yet....You live outside the U.S. I assume if you have it, unless you acquired it illegally and I know that you would <i>never</i> do such a thing. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If those graphics in his example are near PS2... how much better could the actual PS2 be then?
They are noticiably better than the PSP, but just the fact of having portable near-PS2 power in your hand is enough incentive to go buy it.
Since when has importing things been illegal? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Why would it be less responsive? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Because it's closer to the screen and is apperently wired in such a way so that it's less responsive.

Due to the square button being partly underneath the screen (internally), many of the launch PSPs had to be returned due to the button being unresponsive.
I liked Sony's response. "...But it looks so <i>cool</i>! Adapt." ;P

How dare we complain about a malfunction! The thing is made by <b>GOD</b>! Woot.
<b>EDIT</b>: It appears I posted this before reading. Snidely posted this before I did. But still, the point remains. They're basically saying "<i>We're Sony, and if you criticize our creations, you're obviously a stupid liberal!</i>"
I haven't run the batteries down yet (I put in 2 hours total on battery), sleep mode is a wonderful thing! Square button feels exactly the same as all the other buttons.
I bought one that was already in the UK off Ebay but they have all been imported from Japan and no that's not illegal (Why the hell would it be <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ). It cost about £250 and mine is PSP number 952 (They all have unique names).
PC FTW!

Was about to say something about that quote. The gate is still <i>wrong</i> in the matter. Just because hes so renowned doesnt mean hes always right, Sony is way too egotistical.
So they're basically just forcing regular people and software developers alike to just live with the stupid problem that they didn't bother fixing.
Please post more about Metal Gear Acid. You mentioned it had some cutscenes from MGS1 in it? It's supposed to take place 10 or 15 years after MGS2 isn't it? And please tell me the blondie haired one on the inside disc case isn't Raiden :X

See that drifting? Hear that soundtrack? What a return to form for Ridge Racer.
