Remember if anything not to follow the advice on the download page, or even in the "manual". Yes, play a few Combat games, but don't concentrate on being a Marine all the time. Take some time to play as the Kharaa, and understand why those starting lifeforms are whipping you so badly. Get used to how each alien moves, and then start playing as Marine again. You'll find that knowing how the aliens move, and what limits that you can identify will make you better equipped to deal with them.
Failing that, bug the commander for a grenade launcher, and a jetpack, and start nade spamming <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
yeah try not to play to much co, new players often dont want to switch over to the proper ns mode when they get to used to co_ maps. try and strike a balance between the two, if even slightly slanted towards NS_

I'd recomend avioding Co like the pleague, it makes you not value the life of higher lifeforms and better equipment. you start to take GLs and HMgs and Oni for granted. it really isn't healthy in heavy doses.

Also, when you do start getting heavier weaponry, try not to specialise too much in any particular type. I tend to prefer shotguns and grenade launchers over the machine guns, both light and heavy, and also beg for a jetpack everytime, as it helps your manuverability against things like onii, fades, and also the dread OC towers...
