put that 3d card to use in plain windows
This is for people impatient for Project Looking Glass, or people who want yet another way to bog down their system resources with "Ooooh, pretty"

If the site seems slow to you, it's because it's currently being /.ed. It will load if you're patient. Basically it's just an add-on to plain old Windows to make your desktop a sphere. Takes some getting used to, and some people won't like it for everyday use, but it certainly does impress.

This is very cool. The backgrounds are a little grainy but this woud be awesome for displaying pictures.

Am I the only one who saw the Project Looking Glass shots and thought it was a completely stupid idea?

THat's one small step for man, one giant leap torwards the Matrix (Neuromancer).

Edit: That picture of NYC on the screenshots is nifty.

From the screenshots alone, yes, it does look stupid. But on the right sidebar is a relatively tiny link saying "demo." For the moment it doesn't go to a usable demo -- it goes to videos of it being demonstrated at a convention (the initial bits seem like a boring slideshow; just wait for the good stuff to start about 1/3 of the way through).

Those videos help justify it much more. I think it's about time a proper OS takes advantage of the 3d card.

Pretty nifty, sadly, for me the desktop image would probably get the most use.

They're heading in the right direction but to me usability > eye candy any day. Unless they actually make using the OS easier and quicker to use I'm staying away.

I would so much rather have something akin to the os x <something>finder that gives you a picture in picture view of currently open windows at the press of a hotkey, allowing me to select which one to bring to the top from it's current state(e.g. minimized). Even a simple multiple desktops with a hotkey for each would be a much better idea than 'make my desktop even more cluttered by introducing a new dimension for me to misplace things in and make it look really stupid at the same time'.

Hmm I think it's just what Win3.0 is to Win1.0.

Would be better if I can place windows in a 3D room and I actually move around here and there browsing.

Still looks quite silly. Much too cumbersome.

Especially for me. Almost all my windows are maximized, so I wouldn't see any benefit to this at all.

I never got it to work too well. It was an unintuitive interface and had a lot of
problems with making weird white boxes on my screen.

I'm looking forward to looking glass, cause it sucks going through 50 folders at once for model parts and whatnot, so it will compact my screen some

So, to the normal mortal that dosent need space, looking glass might not be anything special, but to me, i could use the neat features it has.
