-lerk, then adrenaline, then hive 2, cara, sof, regen, etc. (for good spore / umbra spmaing action) -xeno skulk -> web gorge (for those pesky jps) -fade then cara, sof, celerity, regen, adren
This is based on how I play on 10-20 minute servers
It varies depending on gameplay (and when I join), but my first upgrades are always W1 -> shotgun, a1, resupply Then I get a2 JP
I get scan if lots of aliens have cloaking, and I get a welder if it is needed. Otherwise I get w2 and motion tracking.
Aliens:
lerk redemption onos (the fastest way to get a usable onos if you aren't a good fade) celerity carapace regen adrenaline (in case I need to go gorge to heal the hive)
The most game crushing effective strat for marines:
- W1 - Shotgun - Armor 1 - Resup - Armor 2 - Jetpack - Wepons 2 - HMG or w3 or GL (if things get despirate)
For aliens, aside from rushing xeno to webs (most effective BY FAR) we have the fade:
- Rush fade - Carapace - Rush focus - Celerity (You can switch adren with celerity, you basically need adren once jetpacks come to keep moving and not die) - Adren - Regen
resupply (because i love to lmg camp and not die at start, at least i try to) w1 shotty a1 a2 jp w2 w3
aliens, depends on mood. usually leap first then save for fade or focus. yeah and xeno is pretty damn effective, especially when you have leap, silence and/or SoF.

If I'm playing for fun, everything goes. I've taken Mines / Grenade / Welder before.... just for the giggle of chasing Skulks around with my welder. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If you're playing 'to win'.... Note I leave Resupply quite late because as long as you're keeping aliens busy, the only reason to 'need' it is to deal with Lerks gassing you, which depends on the enemy team tactics, I guess.
MT, W1, Shotgun, A1, Resupply, A2, JP, Then either W2 or A3, depending on the number of focus users on the opposing team.
I've pretty much given up Focus on Aliens, as although it's quite good for winning CO, it's useless for practising for NS, which is what I treat CO as these days.
For aliens I normally go straight to lerk then get adren and celerity.
From there I get carapace, regen, and redemption. When thats done I save my levels so I can adapt to the situation, get 2nd hive ability(ie. umbra for hive), evolve fade (for some much needed practice), or go onos (for that lovely cara/redempt combo <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
For marines the only thing I have set in stone is mines and lvl 1 armor. The rest I figure out as I go.

alien: -unlock ability -unlock ability -adren (by now i always safe one point to go immediatly web gorge if neccesary) -cara -cele -regen -gorge (one point left) or -support lerk with primal scream if enough cc bashing oni
marine: -w1 -sg -a1 -resup -a2 -jp/ha (depending on map and team, jp prefered) -w2 -w3 or gl or welder if HA

some people say get carapace with their first point but that's just a waste because as soon as you go lerk you go from 70/10 -> 125/30 which is bags more armour and health. Then it's easy to get to Fade and fade owns all.
As fade don't die! Just go back to the hive and heal in less than 5 seconds. You don't give away experience and your score looks 1337 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I've converted quite a few people to this alien upgrade order and the result is going from a mediocre alien with a fairly even K:D to kickass aliens normally greater than 2:1. Once you can fade it's way too easy to get 10+:1 on pubs.
Marines:
1st: Resupply (for lmg camp)
Then either Shotgun then JP or JP then Shotgun
Finally upgrade shotgun dmg to take out the hive when you feel like it. If there are lots of fades maybe you'll want to switch to HMG to support the team.
what discussion? a1, w1, w2. after that depends on circumstances, personally i'd go a2 before w3.
although i commed a couple of games today where i went a1, w1, cats, w2. damn those fades and hives go down FAST to shotties <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If it turns out that we're getting raped by cloaked Aliens, then I'll throw in a Scan Area after I've died a few times to a cloaker. If the CC falls below 75%, my next upgrade is a welder and then mines.
Aliens: I prefer the "Super Skulk" because they're inexpensive, fast, and can do a surprising amount of damage.
If the Marines have a significant Heavy Armor presence or early Scan upgrades, then I'll either go Fade or Onos, but I suck at both of those. If there are multiple incursions to the hive within a few minute period and there are no Gorges, then I'll go Gorge until we've gained the upper hand, distributing webs through all nearby corridors rooms and shafts.
I feel that these threads are useful as it allows the Devs to get an idea from the forum regulars which upgrades aren't used very much and may need tweaking in the Combat gametype.
no offense to anyones upgrade paths but if you can aim decently then you really don't need resupply until later on b/c the clips you start with are enough to get you to shotgun w/ ammo to spare
Marines: -Weapon 1 (Because I want shotgun) -Shotgun (Because 150 LMG bullets is spent by now) -Resupply (Because my shotgun is running out of ammo about now and I might be low on health) -Armor 1 (Focus might drop by around now) -Armor 2 (To get my jetpack) -Jetpack (Let the ownage begin) -Weapon 2 (For those fades) -Some utility (Welder, MT, Scan, or weapon 3, whatever)
Alien: -Hive 2 (Leap against all those pesky shotguns, and meta is just the greatest, no need for adrenaline or early regen) -Celerity (My fade lifeline) -Permanent Fade from here -Carapace (Because it's awesome against HMGs and Shotguns) -Regeneration (No more having to run back to hive when critical) -Focus (Let the ownage begin)
