Now, I don't know how much you guys in america know about John Peel, but he was one of the most influential people in the UK's music scene, always championing new music and presenting radio shows for many many years now, never becoming stale.

He died of a sudden heart attack whilst on holiday in Cuzco.

You can find the full story on BBC news, here: <a href='http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3955289.stm' target='_blank'>http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/t...dio/3955289.stm</a>

He's the person I, and many others, respected most in the entire industry and he will be missed.

Unfortunately living in the US, I can't really say I knew about him at all.

However, that being said, it is always a sad moment when someone passes away who helped the music scene in any country. I feel for your loss.

    :o

    Dear god no. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

He was a fantastic DJ, he dared to play stuff that nobody else would and was probably the only radio DJ i'd ever listen to. This was the man who put the likes of Venetian Snares on mainstream radio.

Free copies of Teenage Kicks (his favourite record) all round. A very sad moment for the UK music scene.

The size and content of the condolence list <a href='http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/3955417.stm' target='_blank'>here</a> demonstrates how much John Peel quietly affected people's lives. I'm filling up here ...

I didn't know who you meant at first, but then as soon as I saw the picture, his distinct voice ran through my brain. Far too young to die, and doesn't look his age either. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Absolutely ****ing saddening. One of my all-time heroes, dying unexpectedly like this. I owe something like 80% of my music collection to his influence, and his show introduced me to I think all of my favourite bands. Now I wish I'd not been such a bum recently and listened to his show more. I used to listen to him nightly, with my finger over the "record" button on my tape deck ready to pounce whenever he played something I wanted to find out more about.

All he ever seemed to want from new music was to hear something he hadn't heard anywhere else before. I just hope I'm still seeking out new music when I'm 65.

    RIP (Sir) John Peel.

    Shame on you!

He's been a Radio 1 DJ since it started.

Never been a particularly big radio fan, no one ever plays what I want. But still, he appears to have done good things for the world.

I hadn't listened to his show in a week or two, so when I tuned in last night and the first thing I heard was "this is the John Peel memorial show" I was shocked and saddened to say the least.

Not only did he do wonderfull things for the UK music scene, but for the music scene of the entire world. Hendrix (in the UK at least), The Smiths, Pulp, The Sex Pistols to name only a very, very few were all only as popular as they were/are because of his radio show.

He used to get two full mail bags of demo tapes from people all over the world every week because they knew he cared that he would listen to them, not just throw them out. He had to build an extension on his house just for somewhere to keep he record collection.

He had the best taste in music in the world imo, nothing was too strange for him.

I can just imagine him sat on a fluffy cloud right now, putting togther the most awesome rock super group ever.

    Sadly missed. Already.

Only found out at 04:00 this morning and went and created another topic on the forums because they were being too slow to give me a search result. I'll put what I put there here and add my respects to those posted above.

Yesterday a great man died in Cuzco, Peru.

John Peel, aged 65, and quoted as "the most important person in British music since the birth of rock 'n' roll" died Tuesday the 27th of October 2004. His influences on the British (and world) music industries as radio and television broadcaster, DJ and talent scout for some of the biggest and the smallest bands in history will not go unremembered.
