An informal poll
I was wondering how many of you use 1280x1024 as your resolution for your desktop or your games. It seems like a really strange choice.

Every other non-widescreen resolution is 4x3: 800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200. 1280x1024 is 5x4 however. Personally I use 1280x960 for my desktop and some games.

Also, why would my laptop have 1280x1024 as a valid resolution? The native resolution is 1600x1200 so why would they even give the option of a 5x4 resolution?

I run my Desktop at 1280 x 1024, my games are whatever resolution gets them a good FPS, 800 x 600 for HL.

1024x768 ftw, no other resolution to be used ever.

Of course I once felt the same about 800x600 and I suppose one of thems new fangled resolutions will capture my fancy sooner or later...

    But not now

Btw, I think an official poll is in order just to get some numbers on this. It seems worth it.

I run my primary monitor at 1280x1024. What's strange is that I *know* it's not 4x3, but for some reason things look wrong when I few them at the "proper" ratio. I can't explain it.

    1024x768

My crappy $30 monitor wouldn't allow better.

I used to always use 1280x1024, but after my format + reinstall + new computer [YES!!] I'm keeping it at 1024 x 768 or whatever it's at now.. Only use 1280 for stuff like viewing bigger images, photoshopping, etc etc.

1600x1200 for desktop and in NS. Usually 1024x768 for other games that bog down at that high a resolution. No, I don't really value my eyesight. It already requires glasses, so this is my way of getting back at it.

1024x768x32 @ 85 Hz until I get my new monitor. Then I'll be doing 1600x1200x32 @ 85 Hz . . . or maybe 90 something, I'm not exactly sure how high it goes at that resolution.

As far as I'm concerned 1280x1024 is the ONLY valid desktop resolution. All other desktop resolutions are reserved for use with TV-output, special monitors, or craptastic monitors and are ugly hacks.

Games I could care less about. Any resolution that works.

    I concur.

Anything beyond 1280x1024 just doesn't feel... natural...

    1152 x 864 32bpp @80mhz for desktop (my CRT can take 85, but I don't wanna push it, about 3 years old)

    generally 1024 x 768 16bpp @80mhz for most games, I drop to 800 x 600 for higher end games.

And here's to hoping you get the Derelict running better Crabbeh.

1152*864*32 @ 75 Hz. Just what I need. A little bigger than 1024*768, but not huge.

i use 1280x1024 for desktop and either 800x600 or 1024x768 for games

nothing wrong with 1280x1024 for desktop. It shouldn't look right, but it does...

I used to use the largest res my screen would allow (1920x1440) but then i went semi-blind... whoops...

I use 1280*960 on my 19" CRT monitor and 1400*1050 on my laptop since its the native lcd resolution for this screen.

1280x1024 will fit my monitor perfectly, however, x960 can't stretch out to the full horizontal length. Doesn't make sense.

    I use 1280 x 960. Correct Ratios for the win =3
I'm too lazy to do the math but 1280x1024 isn't even widescreen (16:9) is it? o.O

Using 1024x768 at the moment, mostly because of the 100Hz my monitor manages to pump out at that resolution. Anything under 100Hz, my eyes start to complain. Occasionally do 800x600 at 144Hz, when my eyes don't feel like having a 100Hz.

Whoever said you can't notice frames above 60-100...

Yay, some other people use 1240x960 aswell! I use it for everything at 85 Hz, with vsync on ofcourse. Oh and also I do notice the difference, like Travis, between the default 72 fps and 85 which I get.

1280x1024 for NS because my 9800 Pro can more than handle it, but for HL2 I'm gonna go back down to 1024x768.

Oh and big resolution for desktop owns.

1024x768 @ 100Hz ftw. Been thinking about switching to 1280x960 though.

1280x1024 @ 60 Hz, because it's the optimal resolution & refresh rate for my TFT.

Before I got my first 20", I used 1280x1024 all the time. For some reason 1280x960 kinda bothered me. And it was good. But then I got a new monitor, and ramped it right up to 1600x1200, and it was better. And now I'm at 3200x1200, and it is beautiful. I usually use either 1600x1200 or 1024x768 for games, though.

KFDM must have a wide-screen notebook. My natural resolution (LCD) is 1400x1050, and therefore everything else looks awful.

1280x960x16@85 ftw. Who the hell needs a 32 bit desktop? As for games, whatever runs. First priority though is the correct 4:3 ratio.

KungFuSquirrel: What. The. HELL? 3200x1200? 8:3?

Edit: Nevermind, someone filled me in. You're placing the monitors beside each other and splitting the screen between the two, yes?

Dual monitors running at 1600x1200 each maybe?

I myself run in 1024x768, because I'm to lazy to edit the litestep them I made to run in a higher resolution.

1280x960 on desktop and games which do not require changing (HL and stuff), doom3 is running on 800x600.
