    Just a general question about UT2k4, how many mods are populated enough to regularly find good servers?

    Cnet's secure delivery sucks. I'm GAINING download time. I went from 21 min to 34 min. AND freaking CLIMBING.

    And now, some smilies to express my distress. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The base installation of UT2k4 is 5.5 gigs..
    My installation with both Community Bonus packs and The Editors choice bonus pack is 6.04 Gigs. Then entire folder (Mods included: Eon, RO, Air Buccaneers, Troopers, ActionUT) is 8.5

    Well, the populated ones for sure are Air Buccaneers and Red Orchestra, and a few mini mods. I haven't tried all the mods to see, but there are a lot of modern time mods that I need to try.

    This makes it official, UT2K4 is the greatest multiplayer game ever created. NS can't beat it, Halo can't touch it, and CS isn't even close.

    Addendum : I'll work on the server later, but if anyone can find me a link that isn't an .exe (so I can get it ONTO the Linux server) that'd be grand. Ta!

    NS beats it in a number of ways, the biggest being the teamwork, immersion, and the skill involved.

    And this is plain wrong. Halo is 100% better than UT2K4 at everything except purely technical things like the abillity to have massive scale battles (impossible on the xbox because of its nature, impossible on the PC because of the ridiculous system requirements), better modability and graphics (although artistically Halo wins hands down as well).

    I have to sorta agree with pulse... UT2k4 with the pack is fun but it's not a world beater or anything. If they bothered their rears to fix halo for the PC properly I'd enjoy that a bit more and XMP is still higher on my list of fun than onslaught but luckily someone is making a <a href='http://www.free-monkey.com/main/utxmp.php' target='_blank'>XMP remake mod for UT2k4</a> so we can all play that too XD

    This man speaketh the truth.

    Also the immersion factor is one of the reasons I like Battlefield: Vietnam loads. Sure it may feel very arcady at points but the sound and feedback all go together very well. (Plus the music is damn spiffy)

    One mod you should check out is <a href='http://www.blackcatgames.com/swarm/' target='_blank'>Alien Swarm</a>. Reminded me of oldschool Alien Breed.

    It has really cool teamplay if you get together with a bunch of friends with teamspeak and work through the campaigns. Just stay away from anyone with a flamer <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Don't get me wrong, I still love NS and consider it one of the best MP games out there, but there are still a few flaws within the game that keep it from surpassing UT2K4, in my opinion. (we're still allowed to have opinions, right?) First and foremost, the weapons in UT2K4 are much more diverse and orignal, then there's the vehicles which add greath depth, and there are much larger levels in UT2K4. (though NS maps are general great, many have some pretty bad features and can be unbalanced)

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And this is plain wrong. Once again I ask, can we have opinions on these boards? You've given me no reasons that Halo IS better, you just say it is. In fact, you've given me more reasons to say UT2K4 is the better game, odd. Halo is quite boring after you play it for 20 minutes, usually turns into a physics party with people trying to stick the warthogs in trees. At least with UT2K4 every weapon is viable. In Halo I only see the shotgun, the pistol, and grenades used by the skilled players. This isn't even mentioning the vehicles, which UT2K4 does much better, IMO.

    I'm guessing it would be to throw off the tracking devices on enemy missles.. I mean, I'm guessing the missles use heat to lock on, right? So a big fizzing ball of heat would work fairly nicely to confuse them...

    Yes, it is an anti-missile countermeasure system. The turret's HUD also highlights incoming missiles with a big red and yellow warning tag.

    ahhhh... nice =3

    I dunno dark. The vehicles/weapons are 'kinda' balanced but at the same time some of them feel woefully ineffective. I often find the manta/raptor's primary fire somewhere in the region of total joke damage and resort to using the secondaries or, where possible, jumping out and using a quick avril.

    Many of the actual weapons have been watered down to nigh on useless in a strange kind of balanced way. The flak cannon no longer is the death machine it was back in UT, neither is the shock rifle or the rocket launcher... infact they all feel rather pathetic like they're firing polystyrene. I've checked the UT mutator and it actually ramps up the damage on a lot of weapons.

    And lets not even touch the lower projectile speeds; you'd have to be crippled or at point blank range to be unable to dodge flak or rockets from the launcher in the open onslaught arenas. I pretty much religiously stick to the minigun, snipe (lightening) and avril. Admittedly if there's a vehicle involved I sometimes throw the flak in to accompany the avril as they're big targets and not very mobile which makes the old frag cannon actually pretty useful but still something that pales next to it's older UT cousin.

    If it wasn't for the fact that most vehicles make mincemeat of people on foot I'd still be ranting about the quake-like damage capacity of players, it's only by the blessed insta-nuke powers of the paladin, tank, shredding manta, squishing cicada/raptors and slicing/shooting scorpion that I feel happy. I want to die for my mistakes and I want to kill others when I get it right and I want it now, not in 50 easily avoidable low damage shots XD

    ...and that class is why I'm a total vehicle wh*re who'll even carjack your vehicle and crush you with it despite it only having 1hp left when you bailed out of it. I'm just too impatient for the normal weapons to kill you with old age =P

    Woah woah woah- Manta/Raptor prim ineffective? You obviously don't use these two very often. The Manta's primary is DEVASTATING to any vehicle(I can't count how many tanks I obliterated with it with jump), and while the Raptor's isn't AS effective, its great against the scorpion, or ground targets.

    The flak cannon not a death machine eh? I've noticed no changes, and I've found that against an average/above average tank guy, I can take the tank one on one thanks to the secondary fire. Singular isn't as useful as it used to be unless against Manta or scorpion, and on the rare times when the Raptor is pretty close.

    And when it comes to the weapons, the only one that is "Worthless" per se' anymore is the Assault Rifle, and thats only if you don't pick up a 2nd one of 'em(which is rare). Otherwise, I get simple and easy kills all over with all of them, except the shock rifle or the...um...laser...ball...blaster...thingy(damn name)- and thats because I'm a spammer at heart. Give me the triple barrel any day and I'll nail. Though with the avril I suck too D:

    I dunno. It just seems like your not TRYING- sure, lots of folks die more from the vehicles, but thats because their so much easier to use than weapons. But damn, if your good with the weapons- I'd say they damage even WORSE than the vehicles(with the obvious exception of the Goliath. Now that thing needs to get a bit of a tone-downage).

    Qua... I'm total UT vet, I <b>know</b> what decent damage is and these weed whackers aren't it. Want proof? I'll quote something from epic's very own 'UT mutator' code...

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Damage = Damage * 1.2;<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    That's right... UT original is 20% more damage. 20%!!! And that's not even adding the increased projectile speeds (like where the flak secondary actually fires as opposed to falling out the end of the barrel like 2 foot away =P ).
    If you didn't notice the difference either you're no UT vet or you weren't using them to the fullest in the first place. The minute I fired the first shot out of a UT2kx flak cannon I could feel the changes instantly. It was that obvious!
    I think I went on a rampage about how they'd gimped the weapons for a few weeks after that. I mean I didn't even use the silly shockrifle but I enjoyed my friends trying to ace me with it and it's huge damage and combo detonation while I'd mortar them with the flak or get in close for some primary fire flak lovin' =D

    Note that I said the flak is actually useful against vehicles because they're so big and clunky it's like shooting the broadside of a barn; all the projectiles will hit so it makes up for the lowered damage. I wouldn't even have minded the whole damage reduction if they hadn't made the projectile speed so stupidly slow it makes me want to scream in disgust =P

    Ok so I'm exaggerating but the weapons are <b>weak</b>. And yes the manta/raptor primary is a joke. It's better than a shieldgun because you don't have to close the distance but the projectiles are so slow I swear they leave a slime trail and the damage is far from impressive, not useless but definitely in the ballpark of 'crud'.

    The goliath is fine... I like that it minces everything in a shot, it's a challenge. Hence the reason I rarely pilot one but take great delight in taking one on =3
    I want things that kill me and everyone else fast, not these silly dancing on foot fights I constantly see while two people spam their slow lowered damage flaks and crud at each other. I usually end it with the minigun or linkgun if I'm nearby or if they're really not paying attention I drop (note drop because you sure as hell can't call it 'firing'... even 'lob' is being generous) a secondary fire flak shell on their head XD

    I'm a flakker at heart but even unless the person is AFK or doesn't know they can strafe you're wasting your time shooting at them with it or even a rocket launcher for that matter.
    UT gave me the quick death and quick fire I wanted and quake 3 didn't give me, UT2k3/4 took that away and the only thing I have left are the vehicles which luckily make up for all shortcomings as long as I treat the manta as a weaponless bike and the raptor as a flying missle rack on levels without a cicada =P

    The worst part is that the new vehicles are spot on. They just feel 'right' like the goliath has and highlight to me, personally, the glaring weaknesses of the others in certain areas. The raptor is good for air-to-air or for missling rogue mantas but quite frankly blows against someone on foot with half a brain (outside of maybe annoying them), the manta is great for getting around and dodging and the blades make short work of those on foot but the primary fire is more a tool of irritation than death ^^;
    Note that they both still have great uses filling gaps left even in the wake of the new hardware but at the same time I feel that the shiny new hulls reveal stuff I sorta suspected deep down in their reflections of the older vehicles.

    The scorpion owns and always will though ^~

    Oh and try you flak on me in a tank sometime.... if I'm in a paladin you'll be getting shield splutted and if I'm in a goliath I always welcome the chance to switch to the machinegunners seat to shred people on foot that prove they can't be run over or hit with the first cannon blast =D

    To be honest though inspite of all the ranting I don't find onfoot battles against anything less than a vehicle to be worthwhile... if we're both on foot I'll just run off and find the nearest piece of armoured wrath then run you over because it's less irritating and downright dull than a dance of toy guns <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
