Locked R_detailedtextures To 0 To Prevent Exploit

<div class="IPBDescription">So now we have to live with ugly NS?</div> I wasn't aware of any exploits with detail textures -- anyone mind telling me what was accomplished (don't have to tell me how to do it)?!

I much prefer the look of NS WITH detail textures (not to mention I'd love to see the bloom effects that have been developed for the HL engine in NS).

    As was pointed out, perma-locking it = bad. Stick it with the enforce consistency if you must, but I think this is huge over-reaction.

    Yeah, but in the same thread, someone suggested locking it only when mp consistency is on..

    Why lock it only when consistency is on? Anything that can be done to discourage cheating in regular play should be implemented.

    Imo I don't see what the problem is...so let the idiots play with a crappy looking game.
    As it stands EVERYONE can change the textures of a level anyway WITHOUT detail textures. (So long as the map uses a wad instead of prebuilt in textures I believe. although I think this might be accomplished even if the level doesnt' use a wad.)
    And EVERYONE can change their models.

    Removing R_detailtextures would be a mistake imo.

    Hades, it gives them "legit" white walls that will work <b> even when consistency is on</b>. I cant stress that enough.

    On a regular pub, it would be easy as hell to create whitewalls and coloured models just by editing. The difference is that you cant use them for competative play when consistency is turned on because you need to have the same files as the server does. Thats how its different and needs to be locked.

    You could include default detail textures and check those when consistency is enforced. Unless I'm missing something it's not that hard to see an easy solution.

    EDIT: As mentioned, you can change any map/player model with normal textures. Detail textures are no different in their illegitimate uses.

    can someone show me these pretty detail textures that we will now be missing? i thought the game was pretty good-looking as it was. i can understand how this is a cheating problem, but i dont understand why people dont want it implemented

    I didnt want to disable it either, but its the only way to prevent exploitation of it.

    So why can't you lock it together with mp_consistency, like I suggested? mp_consistency is for the same reason, right? Like bright white boxes instead of skulks?

    I agree, at least somehow hook it up with file-checking consistency - because blocking possible detailtexture whitewalling when its possible on a non-consistency server ANYWAY, is just a nuisance.

    Why not just make detailedtextures official, and prevent them from being tampered with? Include them with the download, and have them consistency enforced. Pretty simple solution? Servers that don't have consistency checks can have players that do the same sort of things with level textures or models, but with consistency you can prevent that sort of abuse as well as detail texture abuse.

    Yes, yes it WOULD be a simple solution. So who knows WHY they didn't go that route?!

    As for what detailtextures does:

    There are already detail texture packs available.

    I would suggest NOT adding the horrible JP sound and instead adding the detail textures. Things to make the game BETTER.

    I do believe the main thing Voogru was addressing was that, although they could indeed put in a work around to right-out disabling detail textures, it would take time to figure out/implement the coding required. Time that would delay B5. Time that we would all be chomping on everyone else's throats while waiting. So, although I too was EXTREMELY saddened by the news, hearing Voogru saying that he too regretted having to disable it, and is indeed able to eventually implement a solution, I simply leave it all to good faith to the Dev Team that they will address it sooner or later if it is deemd of enough importance.

    /slightly off-topic rant
    People tend to not put faith in the Dev Team for ANY game. People were complaining about the changes in B5 while I was still downloading it. Relax guys. Sit back, remember that with an update, CHANGES are bound to happen. Take a deep breath, and try to see how those changes play out. Remember, Dev Teams tend to TRY to implement playtesting now... more so with NS with a somewhat dedicated group of playtesters. Now, you can't tell me that in all their game time spent testing the game, they flubbed up on something that you seemed to pick up within the first 5 MINUTES of game time. Relax, give it some time, and just TRY out the changes a wheeee bit longer before complaining.

    Sorry bout that rant...just irritating me seeing it happen both on the DoD and NS forums... lack of faith in the Dev Teams that is...

    This <span style='color:green'>FUDGES</span> me no end, some <span style='color:red'>LOVE</span>stick always ruins something that is good for everyone else. I'm sick and tired of cheats, hackers and genral <span style='color:yellow'>LOVE</span>stains that ruin an otherwise bueatiful game.

    I had the rather unfortunate experience of seeing a vidoe of HAX for natural selection to track and lock on to anything with a simple right click on the mouse.

    Theese people ruin things for everyone, I for one am sick of it. Why must we and the other honest people get punished becuase there are <span style='color:purple'>BOOTY</span>holes in the world?

    Correct. Of course, you can use huge spikey ugly glowing bright models if you want (on non-consistency servers) but not detail textures because you might do the same thing. That's why this makes zero sense to me.

    They cant add it to mp_consistency because there are no official detail textures. If a talented texture artist gets together with the dev team maybe we will see some official detail textures.

    Locking R_detailtextures also seems over reacting to me...Valve hasn't done it in DoD or CS and those are more played in competetive than NS.

    Now if I remember correcty detail textures use a .txt file to tell the map which textures are going to be replaced....
    Why not just create a blank one that can be set using consistency so no-one can use detail textures in competitive play, but so we can use our own during pub games.

    That way you don't have to include detail textures and we can have our cake.
