SphereXP is pretty nifty, until it gets boring. Basically turns your desktop into a sphere, and allows you to change the sizes of desktop items, and zoom them rather far in/out. You can rotate in the sphere as well. The program gives you all the desktop space you will ever need, ever, but you'll never need that much. I don't think it's worth linking to, but you can google it if you wish.

In Windows 3.1, the shell program was called Program Manager. File Manager did the file management. However, Microsoft decided to combine these programs into Windows Explorer, as well as add a Taskbar and the famous Start menu.

If you switch to Litestep, it will replace your desktop icons and taskbar with something else. It will not affect the behavior of CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Litestep does not do file management, so you will still see Explorer launched in order to manage your files.

Of course, I recommend you try switching your browser from Internet Explorer to something else first. If you feel comfortable doing that, you may be ready for Litestep. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
so it still keeps explorer open? why have people been going on about how litestep uses less memory than explorer then?

Yeah, I run two monitors with litestep having 6 virtual desktops. So it's like having 12 desktops, yet I never use more than 3.

Explorer is only loaded when you decide to load it. It works just like any other program.
  • CabooseCaboose title = name(self, handle) Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13597Members, Constellation
Yep, if Explorer.exe is not told to load, it won't. Litestep buggs out Radiant though, so I try to stay away from it and other theming programs. My patched uxtheme.dll pwns j00 all!!!

But when I'm not forced to use Windows, my KDE pwns j00 all!!!

How does radiant trip out? I know hammer maximizes improperly sometimes if I have winamp open and not minimized. Odd stuff.
  • CabooseCaboose title = name(self, handle) Join Date: 2003-02-15 Member: 13597Members, Constellation
Well, in Radiant, the entities list comes up with a right click. For whatever reason, using the entities list while running litestep minimizes Radiant. So uh... yea, I try to avoid it.

Oh yea, I do use Object Dock... It's like a fancier quicklaunch.
  • BijiyBijiy Fantastic Damage Join Date: 2003-11-28 Member: 23697Members
I think there is a way to edit litestep not to do that, I look into it later for you caboose.

I use a combination of tsDesk and WindowBlinds.

I like it so far. I really don't need an extreme overhaul of my workspace you know XD
The only thing I need to do is get off my bum and make a fitting wallpaper for once XD
  • coriscoris Join Date: 2003-07-08 Member: 18034Members, Constellation
I've used Litestep. a lot. Its like heaven for desktops, samurize is pretty nice too imo, you just need to give it 5 minutes..

Now I use regular explorer.exe with the old style windows startmenu and disabled desktopicons, minimalism ftw.

Your OS Is windows. Your Windows Manager is Windows.

With Litestep, Your OS is Windows, Your Windows Manager is Litestep.

A Windows manager is basicaly the Gui.

LS is designed for customization, it is also a nice way to learn what *Nix can be like with out actualy installing a *nix.

You don't get the same power, but you do get the flexible gui.

    oh, and KDE FTL
    BlackBox (or Flux) FTW!

    Samurize for the WIN!

It took me an hour to completely realise how it
actually works. But now I can do anything I want with it.
    -Weather
    -News
    -Yes, even penny arcade.

I dont have anything else to pimp it up, but I think It's all I need really.
Just change the color theme to metallic and it looks just fine.

That would be nice if it opened the .EXE instead of asking me where I want to download it.
