All the ~cool~ gizmos to do it!
Before anyone says anything (besides me), this isnt another "post a screenshot of your desktop" thread. *ahem*

As we all should know, there are some pretty cool tips and tricks, programs and software to turn your desktop from an old, haggly and slightly bluish monster, into something that the gods of greek would admire. Yes, thats right, YOU can pwn zeus's computer, but only with everyones pooled effort! Post any program or gizmo you've caught sight of on the web that makes your desktop shine, including some cool desktops, but not too many, I really mean things that change aspects, like your start bar, or how you access things, etc... and if you have to shell out a few bucks for these proggies, just put somewhere in the post how much you need to, dont be shy to post some of the costy ones!

Lets see what we can find!!

cool, but does samurize make you have that CPU load and mp3 space stuff? I don't care about it

I'm just looking for something that will enable me to change the appearance of the start menu bar, and basically not have the round and bouncy windows XP button scheme.

And my problem with samurize is...YOU HAVE TO MAKE EVERYTHING YOURSELF. Gimme a skin I can just import, damnit

I've got a neat program called SharpBar but it's a chore to get it up and running. PM me if you really want a neat little bar that hangs around on your desktop and does whatever you wish.

I only have that normal scheme, and the "silver" scheme, which retains the same round shape.

Style XP seems to work nice although I've just been playing around with it for a short time.

I was going to post a pic but this computer has a weird resolution and it looks goofy when I resize.

Actully Quanaut, if you properly configure the label module. The thing that tells me my uptime and what's currently playing in winamp, it can display pretty much anything. Although, you don't like to work for what you want so...

This Litestep thing looks wicked cool.

I'm a bit confused as to what it actually does, though, can anyone explain it?

I wish there was something that had a 3d render in the backround that you could scroll around in by holding a button on your keyboard. Like a really cool picture of a bullet in slow mo matrix style penetrating some guys head and the blood .. yeah .. lol

It's a replacement shell for windows. In a sense it's like window blinds, except far more powerfull. You have to use it to really get a full grasp on what it can do.

Oh yea, instead of themexp, get a patched uxtheme.dll and you can use themes from themexp

I think there's a SP2 version hanging out some where...

    Here we go...

    ONLY FOR SP2!!!!

A shell is designed to allow you to run and manage applications. In Windows 3.1, the shell program was called Program Manager. File Manager did the file management. However, Microsoft decided to combine these programs into Windows Explorer, as well as add a Taskbar and the famous Start menu.

If you switch to Litestep, it will replace your desktop icons and taskbar with something else. It will not affect the behavior of CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Litestep does not do file management, so you will still see Explorer launched in order to manage your files.

Of course, I recommend you try switching your browser from Internet Explorer to something else first. If you feel comfortable doing that, you may be ready for Litestep.
