stupid content server 10.
I wouldn't bother if you're buying it in-store. Installing a few CDs hardly takes long.
preloading is only for those planning on buying it through steam.

Uh dude hate to burst your bubble but read the news on Steampowered.com NO its not its for everyone <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Edit: Wow! 0.4% preloaded!
It will delete the install info that you put on with the disk and preload anyways if you do that. The only difference is that if you buy the disk you can install and run HL2 without haveing to go online at any point. If you use steam it forces a preload when you try to access it online to upload the newest version anyway. You're gonna have to preload one way or the other (if you want to play any sort of mutiplayer) so you might as well do it now, and all you'll have to do later is enter a CD key.
I'm like you though, I wouldn't play a game like this unless I can put the CD into the machine should I so choose.
*edit* yes what swiftspear said <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
*looks up* Meh I've been beaten.
afaik, steam measures it in kiloBITS; there's 8 bits in a byte so thats only 100KB/s.
yeah, i also want a hard copy of my games, don't wanna have to re-download it after every format.

ahhh, that would explain it.
wrong actualy it loads parts of the game that will not change like certain models and certain textures and some maps its not the entire game when the game is finalized your computer loads the parts that have changed/removed/added then you can play
I planned of getting in the store, its nice to have a box and printed manual, also the CDs in case my HD dies (again).
Can anyone verify that the Steam security is safe/unsafe ?
Can someone confirm this, is it only hl2 coupons holders which can only download this or can everyone.

Everyone can download it. As long as they have steam. Then the day it is released, us holders of HL2 coupons gets ours activated as well as those who bought it over steam.

And, Last I checked:
If you preload it, and then buy it in a store; you wont need to isntall it, you'll just need to enter your CD-key and you'll be able to play it. Effectively eliminating the install period.
Seems like a waste of band-width to me.
My soure is the www.halflife2.net forums Questions for Valve thread. It could have changed since that post, but I don't think so.
"I now have a locked copy of Half-Life 2 on my computer"
Oh joy, oh rapture.
