Is there really a point in pre-loading HL2? It would be much quicker to go out to a store and purchase it then install it. HL2 preload is a 500meg locked cache. The game has been estimated to be 4.5 - 6GB. So good luck on those that want to sit at their PC for a millenia after purchasing via steam.

Note: A little note for those guys that don't know, as soon as HL2 pre-load cache is unlocked, say bye bye to free mods/games via steam.

Mods will always be free, weather valve chooses to distribute them via steam or not. CS:S is going to come free with HL2, and I would place a wild guess that DOD:S will too, as for any of the other valve made mods (HL1SP:S, TFC:S, RICHOCHE:SOURSE!!!!), I really don't know...

The preload WAS NOT all of HL2, HL2 is not done yet. This preload was only content that they knew wouldn't change before the game was released. That being Textures and audio. Nothing more.
The reason why it said that you have a locked version of HL2 on your computer is just because thats how the steam preloading was made. It just takes the name of the game you were preloading and pops it into the sentance, they don't customize it for each game.. Because they are lazy like that or something.
Anyways, as previously stated HL2 is a very big game. So Valve had a couple choices.. have it all preload a week before the game was released and in doing so murder the steam content servers for a week before the game was released or release or release it in phases.. Starting with stuff they knew wouldn't change during the RC stages of development.. That being textures and audio.
The game isn't finished. What is on your harddrive is not the game and is completely unplayable at this point.

Content that shouldn't change would also include text and sound files - since the voice recording is pretty much guaranteed to be finished (except, if it's not at RC stage yet, they might not want all of what they have in the game). Those, unlike textures, can give away the plot (although, I'm sure a few textures could give away plot too - like if you saw Xen textures before playing Half-Life (or maybe even the APC textures).

On an unrelated note: Finally got in line for the preloading and I've getting about 200kb/s (1.8MB/s)...so, woot Roadrunner and Steam.

[looking at it now, it seems to have taken a sharp drop to ~770kB/s...either way, I'm going to bed so I don't care .]

actuallty they are giving everything thats not going to change at all which is quite a bit, but none of it, textures included, can be viewed because its all locked in a .vtf or .vtm format, all the stuff will be unlocked when your register game with cd key.

Mods will not always be free, I refer to an article I have from PCGamer with Valve comments about the option of mod developers choosing to charge to download and subscribe to mods via Steam. So it may be unlucky to those that are not as well off as others in the not too far future ...

I'm going to hate because Outkast has terrible lyrics. I don't hate Rap though, I actually love some of it, but Outkast is Hip-Hop so... yeah.

Besides going past the board language limit, that song made my ears want to bleed. Remind me to get the name so I never accidentally listen to anything by them. Ever.

Well, I got the ATI HL2 voucher, so preloading is my only choice. I don't mind though.
