Would it make any difference if you pre-loaded now, and didn't buy it online, and bought it at the store? I'd hate to waste my time pre-loading, then I go buy it at the store and the discs overwrites it all, making it fruitless.

I wouldn't bother if you're buying it in-store. Installing a few CDs hardly takes long.

    Edit: Wow! 0.4% preloaded!

Basically it's like this, they gave you the game, BUT THERES A FAT LOCK ON IT YOU CAN'T BREAK. The key will cost you 50 or so bucks when the game is actually out... I assume the game is already finished and now they are just shipping it to stores right now.

It will delete the install info that you put on with the disk and preload anyways if you do that. The only difference is that if you buy the disk you can install and run HL2 without haveing to go online at any point. If you use steam it forces a preload when you try to access it online to upload the newest version anyway. You're gonna have to preload one way or the other (if you want to play any sort of mutiplayer) so you might as well do it now, and all you'll have to do later is enter a CD key.

I'm like you though, I wouldn't play a game like this unless I can put the CD into the machine should I so choose.

That and when you go out to the store and purchase it you won't have to download that much more via steam, so unless your not getting HL2 at all it still serves some purpose.

    *edit* yes what swiftspear said

Unless steam monitor is exaggerating the download rate, then this is one huge file. 800kbps and barely 4%

Well, considering that HL^2 is supposed to come on about 4 CDs...

From what I've heard a six CD game being downloaded through the clogged steam servers will be no easy task.

*looks up* Meh I've been beaten.

afaik, steam measures it in kiloBITS; there's 8 bits in a byte so thats only 100KB/s.

yeah, i also want a hard copy of my games, don't wanna have to re-download it after every format.
  • TequilaTequila Join Date: 2003-08-13 Member: 19660Members
The file size is about 1Gb, and contains mostly textures. The rest will presumably come later.

I heard there is a problem with the Steam security with people using credit cards.

I planned of getting in the store, its nice to have a box and printed manual, also the CDs in case my HD dies (again).

Can anyone verify that the Steam security is safe/unsafe ?

Everyone can download it. As long as they have steam. Then the day it is released, us holders of HL2 coupons gets ours activated as well as those who bought it over steam.

    And, Last I checked:

If you preload it, and then buy it in a store; you wont need to isntall it, you'll just need to enter your CD-key and you'll be able to play it. Effectively eliminating the install period.

Seems like a waste of band-width to me.

My soure is the www.halflife2.net forums Questions for Valve thread. It could have changed since that post, but I don't think so.

If HL2 is released before I can get my hands on the new PC my parents promised they would help me buy oh so long ago (50% would be my money - now I have about 65% and they still won't go for it) I'm going to go postal. Just a warning for those of you in upstate New York.
