This movie is going to own.

That is some of the most amazing cinematography I've ever seen.

Yeah... umm.... it looks pretty cool but I hope it doesn't turn out like CTHD. That movie was just plain dissapointing and boring.

Thou shalth watch it with subs!

But it's amusing how it takes a year for this thing....I remember seeing this back last year o_O

But then again...I live in a city where it's real close to the city where they filmed it....so I'm not surprised.

BTW, tis' a good movie. I can't remember if it has ridicuous jump-fly action though

hmph, i fell alsleep, in the theater, during cthd...

from that point on i decided, no more of this stupid bull crap with the crappily flying people and long boring love storys!!

Jet Li's wire use looks really fake. It's jarring. Not into the Crouching Tiger. Hidden Dragon style combat. It's overboard, overly grand-scale, too extreme.

Strangely enough, I liked The Matrix trilogy, but I could accept the wirework because it was done better and had an excusable premise for its presence. Normal people, no matter what training they have, don't fly through the air.

It is not a realistic movie, we all know that. It is more about art and style expressed by movement. We got this movie here in europe a long time ago (about 1 year).

At the beginning it was a bit confusing and a bit boring, but it was really amazing what i saw. The style was so smooth and kinda relaxing, some battles were packed with action and some with chill.

If you expect some uber storry this movie has not got it (but i think it is better then most martial arts movies).
If you want something good for your eyes this movie has alot of it. It is a visual experience with real actors (no 3d virtual super flexible hax actors) and alot fantasy behind it.

Hm, looks good. I giggled like a schoolgirl when I saw the rating though.

"PG 13: Parents Strongly Cautioned"
"For Stylized Martial Arts Violence and a Scene of Sensuality"

What are they trying to do to children these days? I can't say I would be me if it werent for watching movies with Stylized Martial Arts Violence at a young age.

They're going Dub the movie in the US Release!? That's ridiculous. I understand anime because there's not much mouth movement, but I think in Live Action this is ridiculous.

I hear so many people saying "watch subtitles, watch subtitles!" - how am I supposed to watch the movie when I'm reading the words at the bottom of the screen?

You've never watched a properly subbed movie then have you? Once you get into the movie, you really don't notice the subtitles. You just read them subconciously.
• RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
Plus dubs aren't really that great....I've seen a couple of movies from here get dubbed and trust me, it is not good at all.

An over-rated boredom. See The Storm Riders for a good use of CG and Wire-fu.

The only reason subtitles are *generally* better than dubs is because dubbing is so frequently poorly done. A really professional dubbing job can still convey the sense of the movie. Ideally, IMO, voice recording for dubbing would be overseen by the director himself, so he can give the same coaching to the voice actors that he did to the live-action actors.

Example of good dubbing (IMO): Princess Mononoke

Example of crap dubbing (IMO): Fox Kid's dub of Escaflowne

Generally, you're going to experience the movie as intended if you get the subbed version, simply because even if you don't catch every word in the sub, the character's voices and emotions come through. But in the end, if you don't want to read subs, don't read them. Just understand that you may not be experiencing the movie quite as the director intended you to.

Does Jet Li do his own english voice over, or did they get someone else to do it?

Excluding cartoons, I havent seen one single recording with a good dub (but again, we dont get dubbed things here in denmark)
In cartoons is doesnt matter if they are dubbed, because the original voices is overlayed on the film where RL films the sound get recorded from the same position as the camera

Yeah also, the North American release will see the movie cut by about 15-20min.

The cut out scenes are mainly filled with references the executives thought audiences "wouldn't get".

Gee, I wish I lived in a country where the people in charge treat the general populus like absolute retards.

The original Chinese title was Ying Xiong, released in 2002. Is already out on DVD (With English subtitles)

$35 US. That ain't half bad by anyones standards.

Seen the movie (mandarin version).

Well for those of you who've seen this movie and just brushed it off, think about it, the entire movie discusses issues (or a issue) that can relate to life today. Won't say what's what so no spoilers here.

Oh yeah, there are some action scenes here, but not much.

I got two things to say:

(A) Jet Li owns. It is a fact of life.

(B) However, I foresee this being a really bad dub. I mean, seesh, they titled it Hero for goodness sake! That's a pretty lame title! In fact, absolutely lame!

I'm going with rat here...probably for a different reason.

I'm all for the "We're awesome with are martial arts and can fly around with swords!" stuff - some of the time. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (in Mandarin with subtitles...heh, people bought the wrong copy - for them ).

I just thing it's Eastern culture trying to purposefully seperate itself from western culture with the way Chinese and Japanese films are made. It seems a bit forced if you asked me, and it gets a bit tedious [even if you don't think that's how it's intended, that's how it feels to me (so, being different for the sake of being different)].

The flying arrow scenes look especially retarded to me. Ohhh, look it's a flying wall of arrows, which are so closely packed it'd be really improbable that they wouldn't hit each other and ruin some trajectories. And then they land and it's like looking at a porcupine...just bah.

[they also have a really black apperance and don't seem to have fletchings, which would make them more inaccurate, but maybe I wasn't watching closely]

I'm for Braveheart quality arrow volleys (albeit that entire movie is one big historical fallacy ). One on one sword fights can be all for the leaping on trees, flying 300 feet in the air and clanging together kindof haphazardly. It has it's artistic quality - if it does get a bit annoying after awhile. The combat doesn't look gritty and realistic enough. I suppoe it does have that "There's honor in the combat" type of look that fits medieval based 1-on-1 combat though.

Well, I think you get what I mean anyway - so I wont spell it out further.
None of that, "Hey, if you don't like the movie, don't come in this thread!" stuff either, because 1. Didn't say the movie wont be okay; 2. What's a discussion if it's all on one side? Plus it has its artisic merits, and where would art be without criticism?
