And Quanaut! you are misinterpreting CommRage! it's never about humiliating a player, or bringing down any player; it's about injecting a sense of urgency into the situation.
This is usually done by lots of yelling, which sounds like I'm raging. But i'm just making the waypoints or objectives THAT much more urgent. It's quite important to keep the rines focussed and on task doing SOMETHING. And it's also about making the marines know who is in charge, and why.
Now sure, you might get bark at someone a bit harshly, but it's always for the same purpose, to get everyone on the same page on what's happening, and how important that one objective be done NOW.
And tbh, the real reason you get ramboing marines is because you sound like someone from Red Vs. Blue. Don't deny it, you know it's true.
Argh.... 3 servers in my country... Lots of regulars... Jumping into the cc is like asking to be ejected. You will be out before you can move a finger.
Whats funny I've seen a many times before. At least 3 people want to jump in the cc. Ok some newbie or something jumps in the cc. The marine team does things for the commander but the marine team is sort of going to places in groups alone without the commander giving orders. So all the commander is dropping stuff and upgrading while the marine team goes clear out a hive location get double and all the commander is doing is dropping stuff while they marine team is specificly saying where to drop them. Funny when this does happen.
I like to command as often as I can, but, and this especially true on long winding crunch nights, after a while you really have to not command for a bit, the stresses, while not severe, can build up over time. Even when playing on a regular server with reliable people, I can only do it for so long.
I like comming sometimes, but often i wait and see if someone else is gonna do it. Mainly because people never, EVER listen even when i repidiatly tell them what to do. I can address them directly and they still won't listen. Other times my marines basically suck and end up ramboing as lone heavies, when i tell them to stay together and they get eaten by an onos. I'm pretty good at commanding. If you want to be a serious commander in pub games you have to know the game well, you have to know which units do what, what buildings do what, which stage the game is currently in, etc.
Also the most important thing is what I call, 'crowd control'. You have a bunch of marines under your command in a pub, and they might follow your orders or not. Your first task is to identify the marines that follow your orders correctly. Those marines are your main taskforce and you will use them to expand your territory. You don't really care about the rest, since they usually die frequently they make an excellent base defense, and a good scout/decoy since they always plunge into enemy territory keeping the aliens busy. When u need your ENTIRE army to attack a hive or some sort, build a PHASE GATE. PG's are very eye catching and most rambo's enter in it. Make sure that the PG on the other side is in the middle of the action or else they will run somewhere else. If you repeatedly yell to go to some spot, or attack a certain target, more marines will eventually follow your orders.
Also try and boost their morale. A good start can mean win or lose. The mood of your marines determine the rate which they follow orders, and their skills.
I usually try to command... I'm sometimes quite good at it (i.e. we win), but recently there seem to be way to many new players, that its an almost impossible task. Quite often I've had a situation where theres been three or four (out of 6) people sitting in the base hopping around on the armory for no apparent reason. Then theres the people who start the game and shout "SG!" at you repetedly, when you refuse (too early in the game), they try to get you kicked... Anyway, they can only get better!

ns_tanith, we reloced to west something.. I forget it's name but it's just above the ladders. Anyway i reloced there after i heard there hive was waste, we capped double got 4 turrets in dres/base because they were so near and just walked into there hive. I only comm when there is a high chance that there will be no commander and we will ruin a game just running around doing nothing. If someone jumps in before me I'm usually happier.

I get in the com chair once or twice a day normally but sometimes in short sprees.
Mostly I do it when I get sick of the coms on the server but ocassionally I go on a server with the intention of commading straight from the get go.
If I'm not commanding then I like to field command, there is always more that can be done and I like to suggest little things. I know this can be quite annoying to the commander but he can always ignore it and I will continue with his plan (if they have one).
The one problem with pub commanding is that you have to be a diplomat. If your team expects A then B then C not giving it can be a quick eject, especially if the players who want it are quite vocal. I've gone from commanding a complete white wash of the aliens with mediocre marines to getting ejected because someone didn't like my upgrade strategy (e.g. you don't need level 2 armour just to get the nearest res node back). If your team aren't capable of walking 10m from the PG and shotgunning the hive then drop the siege and they'll spring in to action.
If you're scared to get in the chair just log with a new nick and then no one can find out (well unless the server has stats, but who's going to).
Also commanders should take it upon themselves to help educate new comms. Tell them when they don't need a turret farm in base, suggest lock downs or methods of attack, argue with them all you like, but remember they are the comm so always do as they say even if your idea is better.
Somethings you should learn as com though (that you get through experience)
1. Get fast with meds and ammo (and I mean you want <3 seconds reaction at least) 2. Be decisive with your strategies, react quickly. 3. Listen to your marines. 4. Don't get caught up in arguements. 5. Be AGGRESIVE <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Number 5 is the most important. I've seen far too many competent coms lose because they wont spring effective attacks and give the aliens far too much breathing space. You should always be killing aliens, their structures or their hives. Even if you are going to HA train your marines can still be clearing out rts.
