Backwards Hopping

Ok i hope my post won't get locked...anyway, I wanna know if a backward long jump script exists. I'm pretty sure it does cos ive seen players do something very similar and i tried to practice something like it but i need to gain at least a third of a second of speed while running then jumping to jump far enough.

One guy i saw, he was ducking and jumping backward and shooting at same time. His jumps were going pretty far, about normal jump lenght maybe a bit more. Ok, it gave him a BIG advantage on skulks...

I tried writing a script doing such, but I failed.

    Just bunnyhop backwards and press fire <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

This is actually a bug. When you're in the air crouching and a skulk bites you, the knockback will make you fly more than normal since there is no air friction. This is fixed for beta5.

Lol. What you are thinking of is a strafe jump backwards. Just imagine strafe jumpingforward only gonig backwards. The motions backward. And so u know, scripts do nothing.

Yah, basically what ThinG said. A simple backwards glide jump will get you above 300 which is greater than the skulk basespeed.

WHICH IS A BAD THING CONSIDERING THE PROGRAMMED IN SLOW BACKSTEP. Use of such a technique, while perfectly acceptable and understandable in other games, is absolutely reprehensible since you are exploiting the game engine to do something that was strictly not intended by the game's programmers.

I'd love to see the day when everyone was honest and kind enough to forego use of such excessive exploitations just to make themselves feel that much more like a god compared to the rest of us. Then again I'd say the odds of that ever happening are so low that i'd place my bet on hell freezing over first.

You play the game like it is not the way you want it to be. Gliding is so instinctive for many players that you would have to actively think of it to not to do it.

An exploit typically refers to some obscure bug that can be used to your advantage, not something which is so incredibly simple and instinctively done by anyone who can bunnyhop(which is ALOT of people, and bunnyhopping is not an exploit if it is not only condoned by the developer but made even better purposely. It's actually very easy to remove bunnyhopping without sacrificing agillity for the aliens).

The only good solution is to have the developers find a way to correct this oversight(one very very easy way to remove most of the problem is to remove speed gain from gliding all togheter from marines. This is a 5 minute coding excercise if you have worked with the physics portion of the HLSDK before and as a benefit the removal of speed gain from "zig-zag walking" follows). It is also very easy to remove the wall strafe bug.

a gorge did that to me and i almost died

Nah it wasn't knockback, I do knockback exploiting all the time. Damn when you want to be in the bests, you gotta use the same lame tactics...when i dear need.

But I still think knockback should be fixed

Well it was Jump strafe backwards but whithout moving, thats why i figured it was a script cos i managed to make a continuous long jumping script by just pressing one key but not backwards.

And If a gorge did that, maybe it was me bunnyhopping backwards...but i'm still better doing it forward <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I've seen a few people jump backwards as much as they can jump forwards, I think this is caused by simple jumping forwards and turning 180 quickly :/

ps. the knockback bug is fixed

If you run your own local server, turn sv cheats on and make it show your speed, you will see that you can achieve 490 with bunnyhopping forward and depending on how good you are you can come near that same number whilst doing it backwards (if I'm not mistaken).

There are other threads for the "bunnyhopping is good/bad" discussion. If you wish to argue about the pro's and con's of bunnyhopping, use those threads, it prevents unnesesary aggrevation and strife in this one <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Knockback still exists in the current public beta 4a, as others have pointed out, it's being worked on.

Baseforward speed is about 206, basebackward speed is about 82. All you have to do to get the forward speed when going backward is not use the backwards key. So just strafe and turn glide jump backwards. That nets you >300 speed. Many people even find it easier to do it backwards than forwards.

Hiya all, I'm a long-time player, first-time poster. I feel like I've made it past the noob stages, and I do pretty well for myself as alien, rine, or commander. I like the game, like the strategy, the skill involved, alla that. I was getting a little frustrated by the marines who could jump backwards faster than I could run forwards as a skulk, so I decided to check the forums. From what I've read, though, it seems like anybody who is anybody not only knows about the technique, but has also spent considerable time mastering this and other weirded out ways of speeding yourself up (Bhopping, wall-hugging, stuffs like that). Kinda discouraging to know that without using these somewhat "insider" tricks I will be doomed forever to wander the pubs, never knowing what it's like to take on the best. Call me a purist?

Actually you don't even need to jump to go backwards considerably fast. Just turn slightly and strafe, turn to the other side and strafe, once you get the hang of it, you can easily unleach the 9 bullets needed into a skulk while doing it. Of course jumping helps as you get knocked back. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Exploit thread. Agreed, your behaviour is reprehensible. No excuses.
