I now taken an interest in Wushu but, living in the northeast of England there are no schools - is it good to train online, if anyone has used online training before?

I've tried google, and no schools are close to me nor are there any online UK training websites - if i've missed any would be appricated if you'd say <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    ive heard of people taking physical fitness classes on the internet and they work great if you keep yourself true to the plan but i dont know how well it would work with out someone showing you how to do the moves in person. what is wushu by the way, im taking a martial arts class or rock climbing class this next semester and want to have some ideasof what i should do.

    I did Judo a few years ago for about a year.. didn't do anything for about 5 years after that, now Im into boxing... not that it's a martial art but meh! Judo was rather nifty, at least you learnt the best way of throwing a heavy bag over your head... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I did tae kwon do for a couple years...I honestly want to know what so many people see in martial arts classes. It was my dad's idea to enroll me but I didn't like it...do you people think you'll be ninjas after you've finished? Most of the instructors are American and in my experience the ones who aren't kind of dumb it down for Americans. I'm not trying to flame here but most people I know online take martial arts...I'm really curious as to why.

    Edit: I also wish some people were as interested in English classes as they are in martial arts.

    I want to do it because it seems more interesting to keep fit and in shape... right now I do press-ups, sit ups, weights using the cross trainer downstairs and that is really boring.

    also my hobby is BMXing, doing tricks on bikes for you who don't know - but as I am one of many lucky people who lve in the UK it rains and rain stops me/us from riding

    Wushu is the kind where they use weapons to supplement the show, right?

    Seen a couple videos of that and it looks <i>really</i> cool.

    I did tae-Kwon-do for several years.

    In three different states in the US (b/c I move alot)

    2 of my instructors were from South Korea and the first was a world champoion Vietnamese guy.

    The other 2 were both raised and traied in South Korea, and had many achievements as well.

    They were the "real deal" lol

    The third instructor I had ran one school out of 3 separate other ones, with his brother and their father who was a grand master.

    Im myself am No ninja but I was good enough to get first and 3rd place at state
    tournaments for contact sparring <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I went 4 times a week and after several years of doing this, I dare say it kept me pretty flexable and in good shape for the varios other sports I played.

    PS, the knife and pistol disarming moves help are of use to me in my job today as well.

    According to that logic, people enroll for English classes because they want to become the next Hemingway. Martial arts are generally some of the better, more interesting, and, at least to me, more fun ways of obtaining physical fitness, so why not?

    I was actually considering Tai Chi, a sort of combination between yoga and martial arts. Very interesting stuff if you are serious about it.

    Oh no, I wasn't knocking it...if you're taking martial arts to get some exercise because you sit on the comp all day (like me) that's fine. I was just wondering why because any time this is brought up by someone I know they're like 'omg asians roxor i take super ninja-hax classes and my hands are lethal weapons'. I had 2 South Korean instructors (one took over after a couple years) and after hearing stories about when they were learning it seemed they were dumbing it down for us Americans because over here we voluntarily learn how -- over there they are required and their parents are very tough on them. I'm sure you've met people who fanatically worship the Japanese and everything they do because they're anime/final fantasy fans...they get so worked up over it they actually start pretending they're Japanese. At least that's how it works at my school, and I was wondering if it was the same thing here, basically that you guys love anime so much that you grow to love Japanese culture and then you decide to take some martial arts classes that they take.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I've been a Final Fantasy fan ever since the day the Nintendo Power strategy guide first arrived in my mailbox. Poring over the pages, I just knew that I had to play this game, to live in this other world. Heroes and villains, magic and mystery, epic quests and noble causes were all waiting to unfurl before my eyes. And ever since I vanquished Chaos, I've been hooked. Each of the English games has been analyzed, replayed, and studied as if it were a sacred text - and I'd be lying if I didn't acknowledge the Final Fantasy series as the primary impetus behind my Japanese studies.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    That's part of a review for Final Fantasy 8 at Gamespot...it got a 9.5, but you see what I mean, right?

    I don't sit at the computer all day <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'm very athletic so far as BMXing is concerned and home training - but as i said those are starting to bore me

    Only on the computer all day is when it's raing (like past 3 days :@, bike is broke as it is now but it's raining so not that bad and when there's nothing to do)

    I used to go boxing club three times a week not to become a boxer but to keep fit because of all the circuit training they do, shuttle runs, sit up, press ups etc.

    Can't go anymore because I can't fit it in around work <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I grew up studying taekwondo.. got my first-degree black a few years ago, and stopped training to be an assisting instructor during training hours. Did some hapkido and judo on the side, and I got some hours in training with the naginata (Japanese polearm).

    I still run through katas and such sometimes, but really don't put much time into it..> ^^;;

    I personaly have take JKD (Jeet Kune Do) off and on for about 4 years (colege and other things kept interfearing). And yes, that is the style that Bruce Lee created.

    I always liked it becasue it was not as rigid, we rarely did Katas such. There was still the necesary respect there, that you have to have when ever you are doing something like this (bow in and out of class, bow when entering the building, respects to your partners etc). However the uniform was a school Shirt and sweats/shorts <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> (preferably black).

    Basic premise of JKD is:
    <!--QuoteBegin-Bruce Lee+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Bruce Lee)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->absorb what is useful, to reject what is useless and to add what is specifically your own<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I have studied:
    Kali (Philipino, lots of weapons)
    Muay Thai
    Western Kick Boxing
    Shoot Wrestling
    Brazilian Ju-Jitsu
    And of course Streat fighting done correctly (aka, how to stop a fight).

    This is the best way of getting a work out ever <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    You will cover every single muscle group, the endurance you will build up is simply amazing.
    And to top it all off its FUN!

    oh, and you can handel your self if it ever comes to a fight (hey, it is a plus).

    The place that I studied:
    <a href='http://www.progressivemartialarts.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.progressivemartialarts.com/</a>
    Not gona help you (as it is in Queens, NYC)

    As for training your slef?
    It is next to useless.
    You don't actualy know what it SHOULD be thus you can pick up some VERY bad habits.
    Combine that with the fact that MA is designed as a reaction to a threat, you can never get proper timing/force if you don't have some one to work with.

    good luck, hope you find a place.
