Alien Bunnyhopping

<div class="IPBDescription">Game feature?</div> I've actually been wondering about this. Can somebody point me to a post/changelog/anything that might tell me whether or not alien bunnyhopping is a game feature, or if it just hasn't been removed due to issues with normal alien movement, etc.. Naturally, a developer (Or someone who can be trusted to know what they are talking about in terms of Natural Selection developement) post is preferred. When I read various threads I see that folks always seem to assume that alien bunnyhopping was left in because it was wanted in, and I'm just wondering if that is true, because I'm not a changelog nut and there's always the chance I've missed something. I'm not really looking for personal opinions. Anyone mind giving me a hand with this?

I'm very sure flayra specifically included it...

I know there is a page of changelogs somewhere, i'll try to find it...There might be a line of text from the 2.0 changelog about it

I've always found bunnyhopping to be an extremely fun game of timing and skill. It's like a challange with a reward of some extra speed.

Anyway like cypher said I'm pretty sure flayra left it in because he wanted it in. Good choice if you ask me. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Do try and find me a quote or changelog line, as "I'm pretty sure he wanted it in" or 'Why wouldn't he want it in, it's great" sort of comments don't help me. Thanks for at least reponding, though.

Use the search function. Look for version 2 changelogs or just changelogs in general. It exists for a reason.
  • NessNess Join Date: 2002-12-17 Member: 10935Members, Reinforced - Onos
The main search does not function correctly, and the one at the bottom of the forum brings up about 475 results about changelogs that I don't plan on sorting through. Joe, I've already stated that I'm assuming it just hasn't been able to be removed, considering how different general movement differs between aliens and marines. I believe marine bunnyhopping was disabled by having marines lose momentum when jumping, which I don't think would work for the aliens. While I don't care about bunnyhopping one way or the other, I am interested in this. If anybody happens to know, feel free to help out. If not, I suppose you can just as easily not post.

The reason it's hard to find a dev saying something about it is because of the fact that it really didnt matter to anyone back then because it was something that only good players did, combined with the fact that it wasn't that great in the first place... Now everyone knows about it and tons of people get misinformed

Here is the inside scoop. Between 1.04 and 2.0, Flayra decided to remove bunnyhop for marines and leave it for aliens. Removing it for aliens would not be any different from a coding perspective. Flayra was asked on IRC whether he wanted aliens to have the ability to bunnyhop and he confirmed.

<i>However,</i> there exists no official thread on these forums or in the manuals that features Flayra or dev team members talking about the intention to keep b.hop. There exists no portion in the now outdated manual which instructs players about bunnyhoping . As a result, players of this mod are split over the validity of this "<i>engine exploit</i>" as an official feature of NS gameplay.

One blunder on the part of Flayra and co. ...

Alien bhop was included when marine bhop was taken out, he wants it.

Allright, Sarisel, since your answer actually has something to back it up, I'll go with that. Thanks for the help.

if you ever saw a bunnyhopping onos, especially with a digesting jp (sream) behind it, you notice that bunnyhopping in general is just ugly and unrealistic.

I'll agree it does looks pretty stupid...but bhop is kinda needed because gorges and skulks are too slow. I almost always (try to) bhop when I'm skulk or gorge because I know it'll give me that much better of a chance of survival. Now, if the base speed of gorges and skulks are boosted by 70%, let's say, then I wouldn't mind the removal of bhop.

Hear hear. I hate seeing a skulk rocketing around at 2-3 times it's supposed speed.

Personally I would like bunnyhopping removed and walljumping added, this would level the playing field a bit.

It's going to head into an anti scripting debate where people will swear blind that +3jumps makes you bhop 3 times perfectly.

    offtopic but**

its always bugged me how difficult it is for me to bunnyhop since i can only press two keys at once, and im pretty sure you need to be holding three for proper hopping.
  • Seph_KimaraSeph_Kimara Join Date: 2003-08-10 Member: 19359Members
Well, with skulk you need 3 keys really. Crouch (to turn off wallwalk code), jump, and strafe. For gorge and other lifeforms, you only really need jump and strafe. Maybe you should try changing your key config, or make a crouch toggle script or something.

Good choice to let an Enginebug survive? I thought bugs are here to get eleminated!?
No, I think its not a feature or a "Skill" its just a Bug which has to be eleminated.

It was left intentionally and IS a game feature, and is going to be worked on for those of you who cannot bhop.

I found this in an old text file (I used to save every 1.1 changelog).

    1.1i changelog :

Apart from that, alien bunnyhopping is practically already in Half-Life. Try bunnyhopping in Black Mesa. It sort of works .
